"Forget about the girl! Get out of here." Epic Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie hitman action movie titled The Last Mark, yet another movie repeating pretty much the same plot of a hitman who has to do one last job before he retires. But he can't take out this person because it's a woman. Oh how original. This film opens on VOD at the beginning of March if anyone wants to watch. After a young woman witnesses a mob hit, a seasoned assassin and his psychotic partner must track her down before she turns them in, but she proves to be the hardest mark to kill. The Last Mark is directed by Reem Morsi and stars Alexia Fast, Shawn Doyle, Bryce Hodgson, Josh Cruddas, and Jonas Chernick. There's not much to see here, it doesn't look any good. The poster is the best part about this release,...

The Resident Evil films (six films from 2002-2016) starring Milla Jovovich have earned over $1 billion worldwide. The action movies were well-liked by international audiences but otherwise shunned by hardcore fans of the Resident Evil video game. When Resident Evil was first released, fans expected a faithful film adaptation but instead, what they got was something loosely (and I do mean Loosely) based on the games. Jovovich’s character Alice was explicitly created for the movies and didn’t appear in any of the game lore. With this misstep in the previous films, director Johannes Roberts intends to right these wrongs with the reboot titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which aims to get back to basics by aiming to meet fan expectations.
Reboots are in vogue now, but how does this one stack up? Well, it’s not as black and white as giving a definitive answer. The storytelling is more efficient,...

Available today on VOD & digital is Faking a Murderer from director / co-writer Stuart Stone and co-writer Adam Rodness! Here's an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead viewers:
"Faking a Murderer follows two filmmakers on their noble yet perhaps misguided quest to track down a seedy-looking stranger they’ve discovered online who — in a disturbing video — seemingly confesses to a murder. Or at least that’s what they think. Seeing the popularity of true crime shows, they decide to try and turn this discovery into their own killer hit. With the support (both moral and financial) of a distributor, Stuart Stone and Adam Rodness set off on their journey to try and track down this elusive creep. When they bring the video to law enforcement, they’re told — repeatedly — that it’s really not much to go on, and they’re putting a lot of time and energy into what essentially is a fool’s errand.

In a riotously gory inversion of the Christmas story, an older couple plan to channel the ghost of their dead grandson into an unborn child
There’s something deliciously subversive about the backstory to this offbeat horror film, which was made in Canada. Director Justin G Dyck and screenwriter Keith Cooper have collaborated on a long list of treacly, holiday-themed, made-for-tv movies with titles such as A Very Country Christmas, Christmas With a View and A Christmas Village. Anything for Jackson, however, is a riotously gory, impish inversion of all things yuletide, in that it stars sweet-featured elderly character actors Sheila McCarthy and Julian Richings as grieving grandparents Audrey and Henry Walsh, who kidnap pregnant Shannon Becker (Konstantina Mantelos) in order to perform a satanic ritual on her. It’s as if Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer, the little old couple who lived next door in Rosemary’s Baby, got to...

The day Audrey (Sheila McCarthy) and Henry Walsh’s (Julian Richings) grandson Jackson died was the day they sold their souls to the Devil—figuratively speaking, of course. It wasn’t until they joined a Satanist church run by a bunch of posers in a community center that the idea to bring him back became more than simply a fantasy. That’s where they learned about an ancient book of dark magic possessing the means to do so and how they might find it. With all questions about its legitimacy evaporated after one of its spells inexplicably helps a dead crow fly again, the time finally arrived to fulfill their intention of transferring Jackson’s soul into another woman’s (Konstantina Mantelos’ Becker) unborn baby so that he may live once more.
We meet this trio on the day of the kidnapping only to learn the Walshs left nothing to chance.

"Sheriff, behind you!" Saban Films has unveiled a trailer for an indie thriller titled The Silencing, from filmmaker Robin Pront. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as a reformed hunter now living in isolation on a wildlife sanctuary. He becomes involved in a deadly game of cat and mouse when he and the local Sheriff set out to track a vicious killer who may have kidnapped his daughter years ago. Annabelle Wallis co-stars as the sheriff, both trying to figure out who this mysterious killer is and stop him before he takes more lives. Also starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Josh Cruddas. This sounds and looks fairly derivative, but there are some cool shots - mainly with Coster-Waldau walking around in the forest to find this killer. Take a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Robin Pront's The Silencing, direct from Saban's YouTube: A reformed hunter (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and a sheriff (Annabelle...

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Polar is the latest graphic novel adaption in the world of cinema, in particular, to hit Netflix. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as retired assassin Duncan Vizla hunted down by the shady assassin syndicate who once employed his services as a seasoned killer. The result, while enjoyable on occasion with a multitude of outrageous action set pieces is on a whole overabundantly dependable on a repellent colour grading and boorish style with peevish misogyny.
Polar offers a great deal of bloodshed and abstract character yet sadly thinks they’re the highlight of a picture that denies the audience even a minuscule or basic form of personal engagement or depth.

"Why are you doing this?" "I like it." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a stylistic action thriller film titled Polar, the latest film by a Swedish filmmaker named Jonas Åkerlund, who also directed the black metal film Lords of Chaos - which is also getting released early this year. Polar stars Mads Mikkelsen as a master assassin who comes out of retirement to contend with a group of young hit men. The cast includes Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Matt Lucas, Ruby O. Fee, Fei Ren, Anthony Grant, Josh Cruddas, Robert Maillet, Julian Richings, Johnny Knoxville and Richard Dreyfuss. It's based on the Dark Horse graphic novel "Polar: Came from the Cold" written by Victor Santos. This looks super stylish and comic booky, with tons of cheesy action scenes. Might be fun, but I don't think it's going to be any good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jonas Åkerlund's Polar,...

It’s a Mads, Mads world. Netflix has released the trailer for its Mads Mikkelsen-Vanessa Hudgens movie “Polar,” and lots of people who lived by the gun are going to die by the gun.
In the action flick, the world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla — a.k.a. The Black Kaiser (Mikkelsen) — is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm, per the streaming service’s official description. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced.
Also, Vizla’s pending $8 million pension seems like a pretty good (company) reason to off the hard-to-off dude.

"She's different from the others." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for an intriguing indie sci-fi film titled At First Light, originally just First Light. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, the second feature made by filmmaker Jason Stone. At First Light is about a young woman named Alex Lainey, played by newcomer Stefanie Scott, who has a close encounter with mysterious orbs of light that leave her with extraordinary powers. As they flee from their families, the police, and a government agency, Alex and her friend Sean find themselves at the center of an unprecedented event in human history. The cast includes Théodore Pellerin, Kristin Booth, Kate Burton, and Josh Cruddas. This actually looks pretty damn cool. Even though we've seen plenty of superpowers movies recently, I'm a bit more curious about this one. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jason Stone's At First Light, direct...

How It Ends is in no vague terms an absolute bore of cinematic expression. It is two hours of drab, tiresome moments with sparse originality that I can only describe as torture. I’d even suggests the title itself a sick meta/ self-aware pun at the expense of its unaware audience. As you may have surmised, How It Ends is explicitly horrifying to endure.
Performances are monotone and one-note, leaving little to no development of engagement available to connect with the characters present. A strikingly bungled feature on the films part considering the impact needed to convey the terrifying scenario unfolding with the so-called tense atmosphere and lukewarm horror the characters must progress through, yet with insufficient character development...
