Dr Anti-Vax explores how anti-vaxxers went from fringe to mainstream: and the man who started it all
Tortoise Media is to launch its latest podcast, Dr Anti-vax, a three-part series to be released on Tortoise Investigates exploring how the anti-vaccination conspiracy infiltrated mainstream life, and the beguiling man who started it all.
Hosted by Alexi Mostrous, the reporter behind chart-topping hit podcasts Sweet Bobby and Hoaxed, Dr Anti-vax tells the story of Dr Andrew Wakefield, the British doctor who sparked a global vaccine panic 25 years ago, and inspired the modern day anti-vax movement in the US.
Spurred on by the Covid-19 pandemic and amplified by celebrities, billionaires, and politicians, anti-vaxxers have gone from the fringes of public life to the centre of the culture wars that divide America and many other countries.
The series investigates the fall and rise of Wakefield and the emergence of key players who have turned anti-vax feeling into a money-spinner and a vote winner.

The cast assembles on the megachurch stage, each taking their turn in a pool of light.
There are doomsaying prophets with curved shofars, aspiring politicians lamenting election fraud, and naturopathic physicians warning of demonic invasion. Mike Lindell steps forward and says evil forces are undoing the nation. Roger Stone gives an apocalyptic homily. Michael Flynn lobs T-shirts into the pews. Scott McKay, alias Patriot Streetfighter, gyrates to the sounds of AC/DC while chopping a tomahawk in the air. In time, the Trump brothers appear and Eric puts his dad on speaker phone.

Despite chilling similarities between Steven Soderbergh's 2011 thriller Contagion and the Covid-19 pandemic, the film's screenwriter, Scott Z. Burns, doesn't have a sequel on the brain.
Instead, he'd love to see someone write a film about controversial figure Andrew Wakefield. The disgraced U.K. doctor published a 1998 study that falsely linked the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to autism and drove public distrust of vaccinations that continues to linger.

After comparing the term “anti-vax” to the n-word, “Shrek” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” screenwriter Terry Rossio has apologized. “In a recent Twitter post, arguing against stereotyping and hate speech, I referenced the ‘n-word’ (the actual word) as an example of what not to do. That was a mistake. I am sorry. I now understand that the word has no place in any conversation, ever,” he wrote today after receiving widespread criticism for his earlier remarks.
In the second of three tweets, Rossio continued, “You can’t make a point against hate speech and reference actual words of hate speech. That was insensitive and ignorant. I am immediately deleting the post to remove that toxic word from the internet, where it should never appear in any context.”
He concluded, “As the mistake was mine alone, this apology is also mine alone. A deeply felt apology to all. I continue to...

Terry Rossio, the screenwriter best known for “Shrek,” “Aladdin,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,” has some thoughts about vaccines. Responding to a tweet by “The 100” writer Julie Benson, he lamented the plight of parents whose children have been “vaccine damaged” and compared the term “anti-vax” to the n-word. The response has not been favorable.
“My heart goes out to all the parents of vaccine damaged children, who have to not only endure the sadness of their loss, but also the vitriol of ill-informed and insensitive people (such as those here). Anti-Vax is equivalent to calling someone a n****r and makes as little sense,” Rossio wrote, leaving the offending word in question uncensored.
There is no scientific evidence supporting the theory that vaccines cause autism, but the unfounded theory persists. As more and more have latched on to the anti-vax movement in recent years,...

Terry Rossio, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of “Shrek,” “Aladdin” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, was lambasted on Twitter on Friday for using the n-word in a tweet.
In the tweet, Rossio said that calling people who are opposed to vaccinating their kids “anti-vax” is like calling someone the n-word.
“My heart goes out to all the parents of vaccine damaged children, who have to not only endure the sadness of their loss, but also the vitriol of ill-informed and insensitive people (such as those here). Anti-Vax is equivalent to calling someone a n—er and makes as little sense,” Rossio wrote. (He did not dash out the letters.)

Over a year after being programmed — and ultimately pulled — from the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, Andrew Wakefield’s controversial anti-vacciation documentary, “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe,” has resurfaced at another prestigious film festival.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is set for a “secret” screening during this month’s Cannes Film Festival, where sales company and distributor Cinema Libre will screen it on May 25. Cinema Libre has secured distribution deals for the film in various foreign countries, but is bringing the doc to the Cannes market in hopes of selling it to further international territories.
