After three seasons of being one of the best shows on TV, HBO Max has canceled "South Side." The comedy series centered on community college graduates Simon (Sultan Salahuddin) and Kareme (Kareme Young), two best friends with big dreams of becoming venture capitalists who are stuck working at a rent-to-own shop in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago until they can break into the biz. The cancelation is just the latest in a slew of cancellations from HBO Max, and incredibly frustrating considering the show was originally airing on Comedy Central before HBO Max came knocking. Fans anticipated a longer life for "South Side" with the backing of a giant like Warner Bros. Discovery, but alas, the show seems to be another casualty in the quest for David Zaslav to cut costs.

Simon and Kareme are finished, at least on HBO Max. South Side has been cancelled, so there won't be a fourth season of the comedy series, at least on the streaming service.
Created by Diallo Riddle, Sultan Salahuddin, and Bashir Salahuddin, the South Side TV show stars Sultan Salahuddin, Kareme Young, Quincy Young, Chandra Russell, Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle, Lil Rel Howery, and Zuri Salahuddin. The story revolves around Simon James (Sultan Salahuddin) and Kareme Odom (Kareme Young), a pair of recent community college graduates and small-time hustlers from the Englewood area of Chicago. The duo is always cooking up schemes, from black market Viagra to street corner popcorn, to try to get ahead. They're stuck working at Rent-t-Own until they can get their big break. Read More…...

South Side is coming to an end on HBO Max.
The comedy series from co-creators Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin is not getting a fourth season, a representative for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed platform told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.
“While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a fourth season of South Side, we are so proud of the rich world Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin created,” the statement read. HBO Max went on to praise the team at MTV Entertainment Studios, which was behind the series, in addition to the “supremely talented” cast and crew.
“For three seasons, this beloved series balanced cutting, hyperlocal social commentary about life on the South Side of Chicago with silly, sometimes zany humor,” the message continued. “The result was a wholly unique, ambitious and fearless comedy that could speak to everyone living the American dream.”

Chicago – One the brightest comedies set in Chicago is “South Side,” created by Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle. The series began on Comedy Central and moved to HBO Max, and Season Three began streaming on December 8th, 2022, with the same free-wheeling and hilarious misadventures of Simon and Kareme.
The two lead characters (portrayed by Bashir’s brother Sultan Salahuddin and Kareme Young) are stuck in a dead end job with a rental company in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, and are constantly coming up with entrepreneurial “opportunities” to get their piece of the American dream. Both creators of the show also have roles, most prominently Bashir as Cpd Officer Goodnight, with Diallo Riddle portraying Chicago Alderman Allen Gayle.

Photo: ‘South Side’ ‘South Side’ is a glorious anomaly within the usually predictable, and the larger landscape of half-hour TV comedies that exists today. Fans of the show rejoiced earlier this year when the news broke that the series was indeed being renewed for a third season. Originally airing on Comedy Central, but making the jump to HBO Max after its first season, the Chicago-based sitcom quickly developed a passionate and steadily growing cult following. The strength of the show’s writing and casting is simply undeniable. A truly homegrown product, ‘South Side’ was conceived by two brothers who are native to Englewood, a neighborhood on Chicago’s titular South Side. Bashir and Sultan Salahuddin, along with Bashir’s longtime writing partner Diallo Riddle, write, produce, and act in the series themselves. ‘South Side’ Review: Chicago-Set Comedy Returns for a Season 2 with Dreams Even Bigger than the City
The season finale of the first season of “South Side” closed with a few friends in a basement, floating away into deep space. It would have been a bittersweet ending for the then-Comedy Central show if it had stopped there, a parting reminder of how big this collection of mismatched employees could go. Fortunately, after a two year hiatus, “South Side” is back — this time as an HBO Max original — and it’s not afraid to keep going galactic whenever it decides to.
Most of “South Side” still revolves around the employees of “Rent-t-Own,” a store that loans out everything from end tables to TVs to household appliances. In their downtime at work, Simon (Sultan Salahuddin) and Kareme (Kareme Young) are usually deep into some plan that will be their ticket to a new job, better conditions at their current one, or (as is the case with the show...

Midway through its freshman run, Comedy Central has ordered a 10-episode second season of its hit scripted series South Side, Deadline has confirmed.
Written by and starring Bashir Salahuddin (Glow) and Diallo Riddle (Marlon), South Side is set in and around the working class neighborhood of Englewood on the South Side of Chicago.
Season one of South Side is averaging a 1.02 rating in L+3 with African American P18-49 viewers through its first five episodes. That makes it Comedy Central’s highest-rated new series in that demo since the Key & Peele launch in 2012. It’s also the #1 new original primetime cable comedy of the year in the demo and the #1 new cable comedy of 2019 with African American M18-49 (1.23 rating). Comedy Central’s “South Side” co-creator Bashir Salahuddin says he refuses to satirize disgraced former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett on his series about the lower-middle class life in Chicago. In an interview with TheWrap, he characterized the case of the actor indicted by a Chicago grand jury on charges related to faking a hate crime as “embarrassing.”
“No man,” Salahuddin told TheWrap about potentially referencing Smollett’s reported attack on the show. “It’s a straight-up tragedy.”
Salahuddin was born and raised in the South Side, the setting for the show that’s now in the middle of its first season. The show follows two streetwise employees of a rent-to-own appliance store, Kareme (Kareme Young) and Simon. Both characters live in Englewood and just graduated community college after eight years.
Kareme and Simon both live to make a dollar on their various side hustles, and they’re not alone. There...

It’s a risky proposition: finding comedy in the everyday of an infamous neighborhood that consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous in Chicago, and the country. But Chicago natives – and brothers – Bashir and Sultan Salahuddin have done just that with their new half-hour series “South Side.” Co-created with Salahuddin’s former fellow “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” writer Diallo Riddle, the trio’s priority is ultimately to demystify, and more importantly humanize, the community of Englewood and challenge established – though incomplete – perceptions of the city.
The workplace has been the setting for several comedy show premises, likely in part because having a good sense of humor is necessary to survive the bureaucracy, diverse personalities and at times mind-numbing tedium that can come with the environment. But few movies or TV shows have been willing (or perhaps capable) of expressing just how soul destroying working an especially low-paying, dead-end job can truly be.
