The Vourdalak: "When the Marquis d’Urfé, a noble emissary of the King of France, is attacked and abandoned in the remote countryside, he finds refuge at an eerie, isolated manor. The resident family, reluctant to take him in, exhibits strange behavior as they await the imminent return of their father, Gorcha. But what begins simply as strange quickly devolves into a full fledged nightmare when Gorcha returns, seemingly no longer himself...
Adapted from a novella that predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula by over half a century, The Vourdalak is an atmospheric, unexpected, sensorial experience that will leave you reeling and giddy in equal measure."
Releasing to theaters on June 28th by Oscilloscope Laboratories

After exploring the 90s in the previous two entries, V/H/S/85, the sixth(!) entry in the V/H/S franchise, throws things back to the decade where VHS ruled the roost – once again using the found-footage format to tell a handful of spooky stories from directors David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
After a brief flick through 80s television, replete with a pause on an Unsolved Mysteries-style show called Total Copy, which tells the story of Rory a test subject at Stamer University, to open proceedings. A show that the film returns to throughout its running time before wrapping things up in traditional anthology fashion and revealing Rory’s connection to the shorts we’ve just watched.

New horror movies are headed to Shudder next month, including horror anthology Satanic Hispanics and tense Australian horror movie You’ll Never Find Me. And that doesn’t even touch on the repertory additions, including rare ’90s gem Ghostwatch.
Look for Satanic Hispanics to arrive on Shudder on March 8. The horror movie assembles five tales of terror from Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), and Demian Rugna (When Evil Lurks, Terrified) unite in the first all-Latino horror anthology.
An isolated man living at the back of a desolate caravan park is visited by a desperate young woman seeking shelter from a violent storm in You’ll Never Find Me. As the savage storm worsens, these solitary souls begin to feel threatened – but who should really be afraid? Find out on March 22.

Another year bites the dust, friends. Another year where I've watched too many horror movies, and now it’s time to face the impossible task of sorting the best into a ranked list. I’ve been doing it since my first year as a big-boy film critic almost a decade ago, but it never gets easier. I’ve seen over 130+ horror movies in 2023! Ten slots aren’t enough to capture the massive breadth of worthwhile horror titles you should consume. I won’t do it, dammit. I can’t.
…Ok maybe I can but still, it’s harder than it looks! There are so many noteworthy films not listed, but that's the beauty of opinions and personal preferences. My list is mine and mine alone. Other critics will have their own takes, and more power to the variety of responses highlighting as many releases as possible. So let’s get...

Dread and Iconic Events gave the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics a theatrical release on 800 screens in the United States, Canada, and Mexico back in September – and while a digital release of the film is available for rent or purchase at This Link, it will also be reaching Blu-ray later this month. The release date is December 19th, and copies can be pre-ordered Here.
The film consists of segments that were directed by five different Latin filmmakers: Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Demián Rugna (Terrified), and Gigi Saul Guerrero (Into the Dark: Culture Shock). The stories were written by Alejandro Mendez, Demian Rugna, Adam Cesare, and Lino K. Villa.

The “V/H/S” franchise was already on death’s door by the time Shudder resurrected it as an annual streaming event in 2021. So it would be inaccurate to blame the warmed-over familiarity of its sixth installment on the fact that Bloody Disgusting has to churn out another feature-length omnibus every October — especially because the freshest and most satisfying of the five shorts that make up “V/H/S/85” comes from series producer David Bruckner, who should be more burned out on the concept than anyone else at this point. Nevertheless, the “Now That’s What I Call Found Footage!”-ification of these horror anthologies has inevitably confronted them with a degree of saminess, an ironic symptom of a process that leaves precious little time for quality control.

In this week’s upcoming episode of The Discourse, director Scott Derrickson stops by to discuss “V/H/S/85.” The sixth installment of the beloved horror anthology series, this edition follows five sinister found footage tales that delve into the grim underbelly of 1980s America, one of which is directed by Derrickson and it also features his two sons Dashiell as an actor in the short, and Atticus, as the composer.

“Write what you know” is a common piece of writing advice and something that came naturally to writer/director Gigi Saul Guerrero when drawing inspiration for her historical horror segment “God of Death” in the latest anthology installment V/H/S/85.
V/H/S/85 is set to arrive exclusively on Shudder on October 6, 2023.
The filmmaker behind recent horror hits Bingo Hell, Into the Dark’s “Culture Shock,” and Satanic Hispanics joins an all-star lineup for V/H/S/85 that includes David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
Guerrero’s segment, “God of Death,” draws from Mexican mythology and the devastating earthquake that struck Mexico City on September 19, 1985. For the filmmaker, the harrowing historical event that inspired her segment happened to be personal.
“As soon as they told me ’85, it just clicked to do the most famous traumatic event that happened in Mexico City, where I was born and raised,...

V/H/S/85, the latest entry in the found footage horror anthology V/H/S/ franchise, will begin streaming on Shudder service (which previously had great success with V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99) tomorrow, October 6th. This one consists of segments that were directed by David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) – and during an interview with ComicBook.com, Derrickson revealed that his segment is set in the same universe as The Black Phone! It even includes references to some Black Phone characters…
Derrickson said, “Oh, there’s actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody’s picking it up. But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he’s behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, ‘He has these dreams that are prophetic.’ And he says, ‘My sister had the same gift.

It is considerd to be the launching pad for filmmakers like Emmanuel Lubezki, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón. Around this time last year we shared with you that the series was in production that that many of our friends in and from Mexico, and elsewhere in Latin America, were in the batch of young filmmakers brought in to create new frights for a new generation of viewers. Ah, 1985. A time of big hair, even bigger shoulder pads, and the rise of the Vcr. It was only inevitable that all those mullet-sporting dads that insisted on bringing the camcorder with them on every trip would eventually record something horrifying (and we’re not talking about your elementary school pageant show). V/H/S/85 brings that analog terror to life in the newest installment of the now annual horror anthology. Happy Halloween y’all. It’s Found Footage time!
Kicking this macabre mixtape of horrors off is David Bruckner’s Total Copy, serving as a loose wraparound story, and presented as a taped-off-tv documentary about a mysterious entity that is being fed an abundance of media to better understand humanity. One of the stranger segments of the entire V/H/S franchise, Total Copy doesn’t quite work as a traditional wraparound but builds slowly to an out-of-this-world finale.

I’m loving this new tradition of a new V/H/S entry every fall. After a quiet period following V/H/S Viral in 2014, the series re-emerged with V/H/S/94 two years ago and has consistently delivered fun entries. The latest, V/H/S/85 is no exception. It once again brings together a group of talented filmmakers that offer a collection of fun and inventive stories.
No Wake: The first segment comes from Michael P. Nelson. “No Wake” is an interesting entry in that it is split over two different segments. It opens with a group of twenty-somethings on a camping trip. We join them in their Rv as they make their way to a secluded lake. When they get there, one of them finds several old, dilapidated wooden signs in the woods. They were likely properly posted at one point in time, but now lie forgotten on the forest floor. Some...

The most exciting thing about the "V/H/S" films is that, six entries in, the found footage horror anthology series still has the capacity to truly surprise. Less of a cohesive universe and more of a sandbox for various directors to throw their wildest, silliest, gnarliest, and scariest ideas at the wall to see what sticks, the franchise has proven consistent in its inconsistency. An entry that is chock-full of bangers from filmmakers firing on all cylinders will be followed by a film where a few too many segments feels a bit half-assed -- the dip in quality from the largely stellar "V/H/S/94" to the largely undercooked "V/H/S/99" comes to mind.
But as long-suffering horror fans know, there's a joy in watching a long-running series bounce back. And "V/H/S/85" is one of the franchise's strongest bouncebacks yet: there's not a single bad segment to be found, and each story feels fueled by ambition,...

"Where did you get those tapes?!" Shudder + Bloody Disgusting have revealed the main official trailer for V/H/S/85, the next film in this found footage anthology series. It's now the fifth one - V/H/S/99 debuted just last year (also on Shudder now). As expected, V/H/S/85 (#5) is premiering at Fantastic Fest in TX this week before streaming in October. "Get ready for a found footage compilation of disembowelment, clubbing, and dismemberment, just to name a few of the grisly deaths. It’s Reaganomics and imperial disillusionment in the way that only the V/H/S movies can do them — with the fake blood hose nozzle cranked up to the soak setting." Featuring new segments made by the horror filmmakers: Mike P. Nelson, Natasha Kermani, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Scott Derrickson, David Bruckner. The Tron-themed one looks bonkers. This whole thing looks insane! Just as expected - more VHS madness. // Continue Reading ›...

Found footage horror fans rejoice, as another installment in the long-running "V/H/S" franchise is just around the corner, and we've got a new trailer showcasing the '80s goods coming our way this Halloween season. That's right! The franchise is taking a trip back in time with "V/H/S/85" which, as the title implies, will be set right in the heart of the 1980s, when home video was just beginning to revolutionize the movie industry and slasher films were dominating the landscape.
The latest entry in the horror anthology series, which is following in the footsteps of last year's "V/H/S/99," is set to screen at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this week, but it's going to be debuting on Shudder early next month, making it easily accessible for your spooky season viewing needs. So, what horrors are contained within this collection of throwback '80s shorts? Let's have a look-see.

Coming like a bat out of hell to theaters September 14th is the long-anticipated Latino anthology horror film Satanic Hispanics. Filmmakers Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) and Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead) spearhead this fun, yet creepy grindhouse-like horror adventure, combining their artistic forces with horror filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), and Demián Rugna (Terrified). These five Latinos groundbreakers in horror bring their unique styles in distinctive segments that are intertwined in a police investigation of a mysterious and sadistic massacre, with a lone survivor telling horrific tales that are beyond belief.
All five directors share what films and filmmakers impacted them, how Satanic Hispanics came to be, their segments, and the importance of Latino participation in horror.
What is your favorite horror movie?
Mendez: I have two, my favorite horror movie and the best horror movie. The best horror movie is The Exorcist.

Horror anthology Satanic Hispanics assembles five Latin American horror filmmakers to celebrate Hispanic talent in front of and behind the camera, curating tales that spotlight Hispanic myths and legends. Uniting four tales of terror is Satanic Hispanics‘ wraparound from producer/director Mike Mendez.
In Mendez’s wraparound, a police raid uncovers a grisly crime scene full of dead bodies. They take the sole survivor, a man that refers to himself as “The Traveler” (Efren Ramirez), into custody for answers. The Traveler attempts to explain the bizarre events that led up to his capture to skeptical detectives Gibbons (Sonya Eddy) and Arden (Greg Grunberg). He entertains them with four tales of supernatural encounters, hoping to persuade them to let him go.
Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on September 14 (tickets on sale now), Bloody Disgusting spoke with the filmmaker about the challenges of curating an anthology and helming a wraparound...

The "V/H/S" franchise is back once again with another installment this year, bringing more found footage spooky goodness to 2023's Halloween season. This time around, "V/H/S/85" will bring the long-running anthology series to the 1980s when slasher movies reigned supreme and the home video market was just beginning to explode. And the folks at Shudder have put together an absolute murderer's row of directing talent to handle the various segments, including "The Black Phone" and "Sinister" filmmaker Scott Derrickson, among others.
Dating back to 2012, the "V/H/S" films have been a bit of a mixed bag (as anthologies often are) with extremely high highs to disappointingly low lows. But after taking a pretty long break they have become something of an annual tradition again, with "V/H/S/94" arriving in 2021, and "V/H/S/99" following in 2022. Now, it's all aboard the '80s nostalgia train. Let's see what that looks like, shall we?
