One of the things that makes the Cannes Film Festival stand out from the crowd is its focus on undiscovered talent. This year, a 27 year old filmmaker from Leith is among those whose short films will be showcased on the Croisette, after being selected from over 2,000 applications.
"I actually found out about a month ago now," director Rory Alexander Stewart told Eye For Film. "I was in Belgium at the time and I got a mysterious phone call saying it was from the festival. It felt really weird. It wasn't something I had foreseen happening."
The film, Wild Horses, is about a girl called Joan who is housebound by Me (chronic fatigue syndrome), and was inspired by one of Stewart's close friends. "She has a lot of stories," he said, explaining how he tried to make a key scene, where Joan travels on a bus,...

A Scottish student will walk the red carpet at this year’s Cannes film festival after his short graduation film was chosen from thousands of entries to compete for a prize.

Exclusive: Eight scripts selected from 1,400 submissions, including short from The Brothers Lynch.
Collabor8te, the short film collaboration launched by Rankin Film Productions, in partnership with The Bureau, Dazed & Confused and Nokia, has selected eight scripts for production backing and industry mentorship.
Each project will receive £10,000.
Amy Hubbard of Hubbard Casting will work on several of the projects, DoP Rob Hardy will work on Tracks, while Old Habits is written and directed by 2013 Screen Stars of Tomorrow The Brothers Lynch.
Rankin will oversee the slate with executive producers David Allain and Jess Gormley.
In its first year, the new talent initiative produced eight shorts featuring emerging and established talent including Robert Emms, Leila Mimmack, Bill Nighy and Stephen Mangan. Rory Alexander Stewart’s project Liar went on to win a Scottish BAFTA New Talent Award.
