After The Social Network, after Blackberry, after that Spotify Netflix series, the time has come for a Kim Dotcom biopic.
The notorious hacker turned tech entrepreneur was briefly Hollywood’s enemy number one in the mid-2000s after his file-sharing platform MegaUpload became the go-to site for trading copyright-protected films, music and TV series. Things came to a head in 2012 when, at the request of U.S. authorities, New Zealand police staged a dramatic dawn raid of Kim Dotcom’s mansion, seizing more than a dozen luxury cars and a reported $175 million in cash. Since then Kim Dotcom has been fighting extradition to the U.S. to face charges of fraud.
Germany’s Zdf Studios, Boogie Entertainment and Aristosfilms have announced they are adapting David Fisher’s nonfiction best-seller “The Secret Life of Kim Dotcom: Spies, Lies and the War for the Internet” as a six-part TV series, The Kim Dotcom Story.

Kim Dotcom, accused piracy kingpin and notorious internet entrepreneur, can be extradited to the U.S. to face multiple charges of copyright infringement and money laundering, the New Zealand Court of Appeal ruled earlier Thursday.
Dotcom said he plans to appeal the ruling to New Zealand’s Supreme Court, a process that could take another year if the court opts to hear the case. U.S. law enforcement agencies have been seeking to extradite Dotcom to face charges in the States since 2012.
“To say that I am extremely disappointed by the decision of the Court of Appeal today is an understatement,” Dotcom said in a statement Thursday, claiming that the ruling exposes internet service providers to liability for copyright infringement conducted by their users. “My legal team are confident that the Supreme Court will hear the appeal given there are such significant legal issues at stake.”

Megaupload's Kim Dotcom couldn't get a date with the U.S. Supreme Court. On Monday, the high court announced that it wouldn't be reviewing his challenge to the U.S. government's seizure of tens of millions of dollars in Megaupload assets.
Megaupload, once one of the world's biggest internet sites, was shut down in 2012 when the U.S. government charged its leaders with racketeering and criminal copyright infringement in connection with the distribution of movies, television shows, songs and other copyrighted content. This year's "adpocalypse" reinforced the idea that YouTube stars need to diversify their revenue streams, and one place where those creators can find fresh funding is from their fans. As more YouTubers solicit contributions from their viewers, controversial tech entrepreneur Kim Dotcom believes the cryptocurrency Bitcoin can serve as a powerful solution for them. His new venture, Bitcache, is a service designed around Bitcoin micropayments, and to put it to test, he is looking to partner with creators who have more than 500,000 subscribers.
Bitcoin, which comes in small denominations (one Us dollar currently exchanges for about 4,375 bitcoins), makes sense as a currency for small contributions from fans to creators. Bitcache makes those micropayments smooth and efficient, and Dotcom hopes YouTube stars will see the sense in employing his service for those transactions. "Bitcache for YouTubers!" he tweeted on August 26. "More income for YouTubers! YouTubers with 500k+ subs may Dm me for beta partnership.

Unlike Sundance, which attracts a lot of industry attention around a handful of high-profile titles, SXSW is more about discovery. As usual, there are a lot of compelling possibilities in the program, from the newcomers in its competition sections through the more peculiar and surprising offerings in the Visions section. IndieWire got a few tips from SXSW Film director Janet Pierson and extracted these promising possibilities.
Small Stories, Big Steps
The festival’s narrative feature competition is often the place where filmmakers on their first or second feature get a sudden boost. It was there that Lena Dunham’s “Tiny Furniture” and Destin Cretton’s “Short Term 12” both took off.
