Mumbai, Nov 19 (Ians) Even as Team India finds itself locked in a nail-biting battle of wills against Australia, diehard fans of Rohit Sharma & Co are turning to Kabir Khan’s Ranvir Singh-starrer ’83’ for solace. After all, back in 1983, Kapil’s Devils had put up an eminently beatable score of 183 in their surprise appearance at Lord’s in the Odi Cricket World Cup final against the then cricket superpower West Indies, yet they came home with the prized trophy.
Pan to Ahmedabad 2023, where we just saw the Australians mount an asphyxiating bowling attack on Team India, restricting them to 240 runs.
Forty years ago, as a generation learnt from ’83’, India too had lost the toss, and was asked to bat first by the West Indies, who bowled out their less-fancied rivals for 183, sending Indian fans into a sulking vortex, just like after the first innings of the ongoing Word Cup Final.

Actor Anjumm Shharma has revealed how he did not read Arnab Ray’s ‘Sultan of Delhi’, as he felt it would cloud his perception of playing the character of Bangali in the Milan Luthria’s directorial series. Talking about his adaptation of the character Bangali, Anjumm said: “After the first reading with Milan sir, I had started to develop a sense of the character and understand his background.”
“Though I had the book from the very beginning, I chose not to read it as I had already chosen a path in which I wanted to see my character,” he said.
Anjumm added: “I thought it was best for me not to read the book, as it would create a different perception of the character in my head which would hamper my preparation.”

Sultan Of Delhi (Disney+Hotstar; 9 Episodes)
Starring Tahir Raj Bhasin, Mouni Roy, Anjum Sharma, Vinay Pathak, Anupriya Goenka, Nishant Dahiya, Mehreen Pirzada , Harleen Sethi
Directed by Milan Luthria, Suparn Verma
Once upon a time, Milan Luthria directed a film about gangsters called Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. Not that it was any great shakes. But compared to Luthria’s new homage to gangsterism, it was a masterpiece.
The new monsterpiece stretching into nine episodes should have never been made. It is hideously bad in plotting and woefully inadequate in execution. The sets are tacky: a refugee camp in the opening episode looks like a college canteen.
Dull and cheesy, it establishes an immediate yawn sumbandh with the audience, provided there is an audience for these tales glorifying gangsters and sociopaths who should ideally be placed in the trashcan of anonymity.

Actor Nishant Dahiya, whose show ‘Sultan of Delhi’ released on Friday, shared an incident which reminded him of his ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ co-actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. There was a particular scene which the director of ‘Sultan of Delhi’, Milan Luthria, literally choreographed and wanted him to emulate.
Talking about taking a cue from Nawaz, Nishant said: “It felt like Deja vu from ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ where the director did exactly the same and Nawaz sir had to emulate. If someone as seasoned as Nawazuddin could attentively listen and observe a debutant director who choreographed a few scenes while shooting for Raat Akeli Hai, then I certainly could learn a lesson or two from mirroring my director, Milan Sir. This experience with Nawaz sir years back made my journey on the sets Sultan of Delhi so much easier.”
There were instances where director Milan Luthria had a distinct vision for certain scenes.

Period dramas are the current rage in the Ott space. Many streaming giants suddenly have a budget to recreate a decade, place a believable story in the setting, and sell it by using the nostalgia factor. There is nothing better than the reminiscence of a decade that viewers consider special to them. Milan Luthria is known to have delivered many period movies in the past. The Dirty Picture, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, and Ouatim Dobaara! are some of his noted works that garnered some attention. Disney+ Hotstar, as a streaming giant, is on a roll, releasing back-to-back web series with interesting stories. The Freelancer last month was an interesting tale of Indian mercenaries. We also had another addition to the Commando series directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, which was about a soldier who carried out a daring solo mission to extract his colleague from a prison in the neighboring country. Aakhri Sach, a police crime drama based on the Burari deaths, was a decent adaptation of the real-life incident. These shows restored viewers’ faith in the streaming giant, for they could see and enjoy diverse content on it. Milan Luthria’s Sultan of Delhi is yet another addition to this long list of television shows that expands the channel’s portfolio.

Actress Anupriya Goenka has spilled the beans on how she prepared for her character ‘Shankari’ in the web series ‘Sultan of Delhi’, revealing how she made a backstory to understand her role.
Being a part of a Milan Luthria project is no joke and every role is integral, equally important and well designed and thought off. When the director and his vision is on point, actors do feel the pressure to prepare extremely well for their respective roles.
Talking about how she prepared for her role in the series, Anupriya said: “It is one of the most difficult characters that I have played so far as earlier I have played roles where the character is doing the right things, and has mostly taken responsibility of the people around her, and I could relate to that but Shankari is a very vicious character who can harm innocent people for her goals.

Actor Nishant Dahiya, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming streaming series ‘Sultan Of Delhi’, has shared that for him his character in the series is very ‘far-fetched’ and that it is diametrically opposite to him as a person.
In the series, Nishant essays the role ofthe antagonist, R P Singh, and for him stepping into the shows of the character was quite challenging, and having no commonality with the character made it even tougher.
Talking about the same, Nishant said: “I think the most challenging part in playing Rp was the initial part of understanding why he is the way he is and trying to figure out what turned him into what he is today, understanding his thought process, his psyche and trying to create things in my head to feel exactly the way Rp feels.”
He further mentioned: “That was the most difficult thing in terms of adapting to this character.

Nishant said: “Working with Milan sir was an absolute blast and obviously a learning experience. He has this very positive, endearing and welcoming persona and has this knack of making things very easy for his actors. He knows exactly what he wants on set and when he explains things, he makes it so very easy to go ahead and perform the scenes.”
“He is also someone who gives you a lot of space to do your own thing with your characters and experiment ourselves. If there is something that probably he thinks we could change, he comes up to his actors and discusses the same.”

Director Milan Luthria, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming streaming show ‘Sultan Of Delhi’, has shared an incident from the shooting of the series with actress Mouni Roy. In fact, the director said that the whole cast of the series has troubled him a lot.
Talking about the same, he said, “I should be actually saying that I enjoyed making my Ott debut with this project but the entire cast has troubled me a lot for the past 2 years and the first in that line is Mouni Roy. Mouni came to set 10 mins before call time to greet us all in the morning and then we would see her directly during lunch time. She would take 3 hours to get ready and arrive on set.”
