Ahead of this year’s BAFTAs, HeyUGuys had the privilege to catch up with the writer-director of Victor + Kelly Kieran Evans who is nominated for the Best British Debut BAFTA on Sunday the 16th February. It is a nomination he never expected, but one that he admits has put him a great position.
Whilst the purpose of our conversation was his BAFTA nomination, in speaking with Kieran I uncovered a compelling story of his journey towards his nomination for outstanding debut. Behind the BAFTA gold mask lies a story of a mother and her son’s love for cinema, their appreciation of cinematic magic, a filmmakers reverence for the craft of filmmaking, and the desire to create stories that have and will continue to take us out of our space.
A fitting way to begin proceedings would be to ask about the genesis of Kelly + Victor, which has culminated in...

Andrew Pulver recommends the haunting British romantic drama Kelly + Victor. The film, from first-time feature director Kieran Evans, follows the eponymous leads as they meet, become romantically involved and find darkness lurking in the bedroom. Pulver says the film is directed with real visual flair and played with 'unforced naturalness' by its two rising stars

★★☆☆☆ Two attractive strangers lock eyes across the floor of a Liverpool nightclub. On their way back to her place, she ominously informs him that their respective star signs promise sex that will either be devastatingly good, or just plain devastating. What follows details the perilously destructive fling of the titular Kelly + Victor (2013). Based on the novel of the same name by Niall Griffiths, Welsh director Kieran Evans' drama charts an obsessive sexual relationship posited as the only type of love left in our harsh world. Sadly, any treatise on modern attachment is hamstrung by a clumsy script and dearth of emotional engagement.
After the couple's 'meet-cute', they have sex back at Kelly's (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) house. It's this sex, and the thrill that Victor (Julian Morris) finds he derives from asphyxiation during it, that proves the catalyst for their spiralling enthralment. There's a week before they see one another again,...

A story of two lovers locked in a sado-masochistic relationship is occasionally overwrought but compelling
Based on the novel by Niall Griffiths, this tale of two lost souls trapped in a destructive sado-masochistic relationship positions itself somewhere between Blue Valentine and 9 Songs, both of which similarly interlaced scenes of intimacy past and present to powerful effect. Antonia Campbell-Hughes and Julian Morris are impressively raw and unguarded as the doomed lovers, their nerves exposed for all to see as the roots of their angst are increasingly laid bare. At times the anguish slips into overstatement, with the petite mort of auto-asphyxiation becoming more practical than metaphorical. But it's passionately played throughout, and clearly wrenched from the gut.

As the London Film Festival looms ever closer, it’s a hit from last year’s event that is soon to hit our screens – and ahead of the release of Kieran Evans’ Kelly + Victor, we spoke to Victor himself, Julian Morris.
Starring alongside actress Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Kelly + Victor tells the story of two young lover, who come together after meeting in a nightclub, and when discovering they both share a passion for aggressive, submissive sex, they embark on an intense relationship that neither of them could have foreseen. Morris discusses the more graphic side to the film and whether he’s shown this picture to his friends and family, while also telling us why he feels this project is the one he is most proud of in his career so far.
Kelly + Victor is a full on film, and certainly a brave move to have taken yourself. Did you have any apprehensions before getting involved,...

The primarily documentary director Keiran Evans was fortunate enough to know writer Niall Griffiths before he wrote Kelly + Victor, which Evans has adapted into a feature film. Evans’ relationship and familiarity with Griffiths and his work facilitated him to adapt the cinematic novel into the screenplay of Kelly + Victor. The gritty drama about a young couple finding themselves in love in Liverpool makes its North American premiere tomorrow at SXSW, after a world premiere at the London Film Festival in October. While Kelly + Victor is Evans’ first narrative film, he approached the movie’s subjects as he would a documentary — as …...

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...

Kieran Evans’ adaptation of Niall Griffiths’ novel of the same name is from its outset anything but a meet-cute. The titular protagonists (played by Antonia Campbell-Hughes and Julian Morris) meet while pilled-up at a Liverpool nightclub, Evans’ beautifully-lensed visuals enhancing the dream-like emotional high of their meet, and their inevitable night of inebriated passion.
The initial sex scene, like all throughout, is raw and visceral, lacking glamour, but providing piercing psychological insights into both characters; Kelly choosing to strangle Victor mid-coitus introduces the film’s sadomasochistic central theme, making it clear that Kelly is beset by an ambiguous, slow-revealing past that might – or might not – explain her bizarre sexual proclivities. In the clear, albeit hungover light of the next day, the two still want each other, and so continue to meet up for sex, but find that something else blossoms also.
What Evans arguably does best...
