Described as a “hugely ambitious feature film slate,” El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, and Variety brings us the scoop this afternoon.
The Latin House of Horror will be dedicated to “channeling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre artists emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.”
A six-movie slate was announced out of Cannes this week. Mexico’s Sula Films will produce the series, with Film Factory Entertainment handling world sales.
Variety reports, “The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain.”

El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, a hugely ambitious feature film slate channelling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre directors – and indeed writers – emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.
The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain, El Estudio producer Enrique López Lavigne told Variety.
Mexico’s Sula Films, headed by Mexican producer Alejandro Sugich (“Los Hermanos Salvador”), will also produce the series. Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment is handling world sales.
Announced at Cannes, the House’s first slate of six movies features established talent such as Adrián García Bogliano, a founding figure of modern Argentine scarefare, now based out of Mexico; and Isaac Ezban, who rapidly established a reputation for films wrapped in hauntingly surreal scenarios: Think “The Incident” and “The Similars.

As the calendar changes from October to November, Mexican horror fans will ascend for the twelfth year on Morbido Fest, a Mexico City-based festival dedicated to all things macabre, organized and executed by Morbido Group CEO and founder Pablo Guisa Koestinger.
This year’s festival will kick off Oct. 30 with a spectacle grander in its ambition than any Morbido inauguration before. Taking place within the Esperanza Iris City theater, more than 60 artists will perform six choreographed musical numbers with Guisa taking the reigns as master of ceremonies. Those familiar with Guisa and his public persona won’t be surprised to hear that his opening night wardrobe alone includes eight costumes, with more to come in the following days.
Somehow, the TV network owner, festival director, writer, publisher and radio host found time to make appearances in three high-profile films screening at this year’s fest: Paco Plaza’s “Eye for an Eye,...

It's the most wonderful time, of my year. In less than two weeks we return to Cdmx and Morbido Film Fest to celebrate their twelfth year, taking to the high seas with this year's water theme, bringing local and international genre cinema to Mexico. The festival announced their complete lineup yesterday and there is a terrific mix of local and international titles. Ant Timpson's Come To Daddy has been shredding up the festival circuit and we cannot see what the local audience makes of Lijo Jose Pellissery's Jallikattu. We guarantee that Edgar Nito's award winning flick The Gasoline Thieves will be a sell out show this year. The better question is how many viewers are going to leave the screening of Ping Lumpraploeng's The...

We’ve all heard the warning, “If you play with fire, you’re gonna get burned.” Well, that’s nothing compared to the consequences if you steal gasoline straight from the source — an extremely high-risk practice now on the rise in Mexico, where the combustibility of extracting raw fuel from open fields is amplified by the dangers of dealing with the cartels who control this emerging black market.
However volatile, these activities have become widespread enough that the locals now have a word for such outlaws: “Huachicolero” — the original Spanish-language title of director Edgar Nito’s attention-grabbing, ignition-ready debut, “The Gasoline Thieves,” which earned its talented helmer the “best new narrative filmmaker” title at the Tribeca Film Festival. For complicated reasons, Mexican crime stories generally don’t translate well across borders: Those that play well at home tend to feel exaggerated and over-the-top compared to the cold-blooded ruthlessness of movies like “Sicario,...

The Gasoline Thieves (aka Huachicolero), the first feature-lenght film by Mexican director Edgar Nito, begins as a crime thriller, with a captivating nocturnal scene with little dialogue in which a pair of huachicoleros (one of them played by Pascacio López) scare away other gasoline thieves from "their territory”, taking the life of one of them and leaving the corpse out in the open, with all the cold blood that characterizes the pawns of organized crime. Set in Guanajuato, where Nito is originally from, The Gasoline Thieves is another portrait of violence in Mexico by the director of Masacre in San José, the 2015 short film that was inspired by the real-life story of Don Alejo. He was the old man who, in 2010, defended to...

Fantastic cinema aficionados started to notice Edgar Nito back in 2014, when the young Mexican director made one of the segments of the horror anthology México Bárbaro. A year later, his short film Masacre en San José quickly took him to other territories, as it was based on the true story of Don Alejo, a man who in 2010 defended his ranch to the death from several members of organized crime. Evidently, Nito is interested in portraying the violent reality of Mexico. In that tenor, his first feature-length film, The Gasoline Thieves (aka Huachicolero), explores one of the most notorious criminal activities in recent memory: the so-called huachicol, or fuel theft. Nito comes from Irapuato, Guanajuato, the Mexican town with more clandestine taps used for gasoline...

For viewers of recent horror anthology project Mexico Barbaro, director Edgar Nito needs little introduction. Surrounded by more experienced directors and bigger names Nito's segment was, nonetheless, a clear standout in the acclaimed anthology, a true gem of a piece packed to the gills with a vibrant edgy energy. And so it's significant news that after a string of critically acclaimed short films Nito is now in production on his debut feature. Guachicolero stars Eduardo Banda as a young man working with locals gangs to siphon gasoline out of government pipelines to sell on the black market. Plenty of familiar names on the production side of this as well with Joshua Sobel (Are We Not Cats, Graceland, Scherzo Diabolico), Annick Mahnert (78 / 52, Dearest...

Mexico Barbaro
Directed by Isaac Ezban, Laurette Flores Bornn, Jorge Michel Grau, Ulises Guzman, Edgar Nito, Lex Ortega, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Aaron Soto
Mexico, 2014
There’s a line in Mexico Barbaro that goes something like, “Drain the blood from your sister’s vagina or I’ll suck your soul out of your anus.” And that’s not the most outrageous thing that happens in this horror anthology that pulls from Mexican folklore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and From Dusk Till Dawn, among others.
Mexico Barbaro is proudly off the wall, and it boasts horror tales that range from the modern (Tzompantli) to the Hitchcockian (Lo que importa es lo de adentro), to the Troma-like (La cosa mas preciada). That’s an advantage: the entirety of Mexico Barbaro is likely not for anyone, but there’s bound to be at least one entry in here that plays to any horror fan’s tastes.

Ahead of its November 3rd DVD and digital release from Dark Sky Films, the horror anthology México Barbaro is teased in a new trailer.
"Eight Mexican directors have united to create a film anthology featuring the most brutally terrifying Mexican traditions and legends, brought to vividly shocking life. MÉXICO Barbaro presents haunting stories that have been woven into the fabric of a nation’s culture, some passed down through the centuries and some new, but all equally frightening. Stories of boogeymen, trolls, ghosts, monsters, Aztec sacrifices, and - of course - the Day of the Dead all come together to create a film that is as original as it is familiar... and as important as it is horrifying.
The directors represented in this anthology film are Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are, The ABCs of Death), Isaac Ezban (upcoming Fantastic Fest award winner The Incident), Laurette Flores, Ulises Guzmán,...
