A celebratory slasher that slices into the traditional fabric of Christmas-themed cinema, It's a Wonderful Knife invites viewers into Angel Falls, a seemingly idyllic haven where everything is "perfect" around the holidays... except for that masked killer running around town.
With It's a Wonderful Knife now streaming on Shudder, AMC+, and other VOD platforms, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with Jane Widdop, who plays Winnie Carruthers, a photographer transported to an alternate timeline one year after putting a stop to the Angel Falls killer... who is alive and unwell in this new twisted version of Angel Falls, forcing Winnie and local movie theater projectionist Bernie Simon (Jess McLeod) to team up to take down the Angel Falls murderer once more... and hopefully send Winnie back home to the previous (and slightly less blood-soaked) timeline.

Plot: A year after stopping a masked slasher’s killing spree, a teen girl wishes she had never been born. As a result, she gets a glimpse into a world where she never existed – and the killer is still slashing their way through her hometown.
Review: Separately, Tyler MacIntyre and Michael Kennedy have delivered two of the most popular cult slasher films of recent years – Tragedy Girls and Freaky. Now they have teamed up to bring us It’s a Wonderful Knife, a film that follows the current trend of giving slasher movies a high concept twist. Happy Death Day was a time loop slasher, Totally Killer was a time travel slasher, Freaky was a body swap slasher. This time, we’re getting a movie that asks, “What if It’s a Wonderful Life had a masked killer in it?”

A good cast can’t lift this not-quite-convincing retake on It’s a Wonderful Life as a teen frightfest
Here is a classic example of a film you root for, fervently willing it to be brilliant. It’s got Joel McHale from Community in it – great. It’s got Justin Long committing to a bit as a Trump-style property baron with blond hair and spray tan – fabulous. Even more exciting: there’s a role for Katharine Isabelle, star of beloved turn-of-the-century horror comedy Ginger Snaps, as a cool lesbian aunt.
The premise is fun, too: a loose remake of It’s a Wonderful Life as a comedy-horror about a teenage girl called Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop), whose life goes to hell after she kills a masked maniac. This leads her to wish she had never been born – a wish then somehow granted by the cosmos. In turn, this gives said...

The new film “It’s a Wonderful Knife,” written by Michael Kennedy (“Freaky”) and directed by Tyler MacIntyre (“Tragedy Girls;” “V/H/S/99”) falls into numerous genres: slasher, comedy, holiday and even LGBTQ+.
It’s no surprise that Kennedy and MacIntyre drew upon some obvious — and not-so-obvious — inspirations for the festive and frightening feature. TheWrap caught up with Kennedy and MacIntyre to talk all things “It’s a Wonderful Knife.”
The obvious inspiration for the film — which finds a young woman (Jane Widdop) transported to a world where she never existed on the eve of Christmas — is “It’s a Wonderful Life.” What is your connection to the classic?
Kennedy: It was a holiday staple in my family household growing up every year, and a Christmas family favorite. It was also my dad’s favorite movie; he passed away in 2018. So this movie was kind of a weird way to honor him.

It’s good to see a steady stream of festive horror films being released year-on-year. Recently we’ve had everything from musicals such as Anna and the Apocalypse, to comedy action such as Violent Night. We’ve even been allowed to get a sneak peak of next year’s bloody Christmas as Art the Clown will seemingly take on the role of Santa Claus in Terrifier 3. However, this year we are gifted with a small present that has been placed delicately towards the back of the tree. That present is It’s a Wonderful Knife, and you should unwrap it as soon as you can.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year according to Andy Williams, but that’s not the case for Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop). As others around her, including all of her immediate family, are thriving, Winnie is still traumatised by events of the...

An inverted Christmas tree with as many missed opportunities as you’d find toppled ornaments, “It’s a Wonderful Knife” begins where most slashers end. Our final girl dispatches and unmasks the killer in just a cool 15 minutes before a title card announces the cutlery pun-turned-feature film in earnest. It’s then that director Tyler MacIntyre really gets to work, reimagining the black-and-white holiday classic from 1946 as a middling 2023 slasher satire doomed to fade from memory with the calendar year.
The quaint suburban town of Angel Falls was being terrorized by a demon angel, but not anymore thanks to Winnie Carruthers. Some clever repurposing of jumper cables saved Winnie’s brother Jimmy (Aiden Howard) from a near-stabbing by the Angel in an efficient opening act, but the jolt couldn’t bring back her friend Cara (Hana Huggins) who was slaughtered via winged dagger after her boyfriend (Oscar Chark) got a giant...

Thank goodness Justin Long has stuck around. After breaking out in the frightfully gross road movie “Jeepers Creepers” and popping in aughts comedies like “Dodgeball” and “Accepted,” the 45-year-old has been on screen long enough to be getting genre-movie roles tailor-made for him — or at least uniquely suited to his strength — playing (not so) “nice guys” in all their dishonesty.
Having tested the waters as an East Coast professor on probation in “After Class” and an idiot Hollywood hotshot facing a #MeToo storm in last year’s “Barbarian,” Long follows up as the big bad in the horror comedy “It’s a Wonderful Knife,” released in theaters Nov. 10, before streaming on Shudder down the road. A celebratory slasher that slices into the traditional fabric of Christmas-themed cinema, It's a Wonderful Knife invites viewers into Angel Falls, a seemingly idyllic haven where everything is "perfect" around the holidays... except for that masked killer running around town. One year after putting a stop to the killer's Christmas Eve rampage, Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop) can't stand to live within her small town's toxic positivity in the aftermath of unspeakable tragedies. With a little murderous holiday magic, she finds herself whisked away to an alternate version of her town where she never existed... and the Christmas killer is not only still surviving but is thriving with a body count that continues to rise all year round. It's up to Winnie to stop the killer once again, save her friends and family, and find a way back to her own timeline, all while learning some things about herself amidst the Christmas carnage.

A Christmas miracle turns macabre in time-bending holiday horror It’s A Wonderful Knife. Written by screenwriter remixologist Michael Kennedy (Freaky) and directed by Tyler Macintyre (Tragedy Girls), this snowy slasher bends the bones of Frank Capra’s heart-warming It’s a Wonderful Life (1947) into a stalk & slash tale of hell on earth and ill will toward the inhabitants of an idyllic mountain town. Michael Kennedy is a massive fan of the Scream franchise, and in recent years he has had the opportunity to write some of his own slasher movies. First was the body swap slasher Freaky, which was directed by Christopher Landon. Coming to theatres this Friday, November 10th, is the “It’s a Wonderful Life with a masked maniac” slasher It’s a Wonderful Knife… and while Kennedy was working with director Tyler MacIntyre on It’s a Wonderful Knife, his friend and Freaky collaborator Christopher Landon secured the job of directing Scream 7 – which has led some fans to speculate that Kennedy might end up working on the Scream 7 script. The speculation picked up steam when Kennedy shared a picture of him sharing a meal with Landon and Scream (2022) and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. But during a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Kennedy said he...

High concept holiday slasher It’s a Wonderful Knife continues the time honored tradition of injecting horror into cozy holiday fare. Director Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls, V/H/S/99) and writer Michael Kennedy (Freaky) blend Scream 2 with It’s a Wonderful Life to plunge its central characters into a bizarro snow globe of horrors, wearing their cinematic influences on their sleeves throughout. It’s not the horror that dominates this high concept mashup, though; It’s a Wonderful Knife is more interested in spreading holiday cheer and warm fuzzy feels.

Over the past few years, horror fans have enjoyed a rejuvenation of the slasher subgenre. Even more exciting is the fact that writers and directors are finding new and creative ways to make slasher movies fun. A great example of this is the body swap horror comedy Freaky (2020), written by Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon and directed by Landon. Now Kennedy has written the time-travel Christmas slasher It’s a Wonderful Knife, directed by Tyler MacIntyre, who also directed the dark horror comedy Tragedy Girls (2017).
It’s a Wonderful Knife tells the story of teenager Winnie Carruthers, played by Jane Widdop (Yellowjackets), who saves her hometown of Angel Falls from an unhinged killer on Christmas Eve. A year later, struggling to cope with the events of the previous Christmas, Winnie wishes she had never been born and is mysteriously transported to a parallel universe where things are even worse than she could have ever imagined.

The heart of the canon of Christmas horror movies is growing three sizes this year thanks to "It's a Wonderful Knife," the yuletide slasher from "Tragedy Girls" and "V/H/S/99" director Tyler MacIntyre and "Freaky" screenwriter Michael Kennedy. I've been working in this industry for quite some time, and MacIntyre and Kennedy are two people I've been privileged to get to know over the years. Both are responsible for two of my favorite horror films of the last decade, so seeing them join forces for a holiday horror flick has reignited my belief in Santa Claus, because he certainly got my letter. The new film tells the story of Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop), who, one year after becoming a final girl and saving the town of Angel Falls from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, wishes she was never born and wakes up in a parallel universe where she doesn't exist...

"It's A Wonderful Knife" is a warm and fuzzy Christmas slasher that reimagines "It's A Wonderful Life" in a head-on collision with "Scream." Writer Michael Kennedy and director Tyler MacIntyre don't want to eviscerate Yuletide feelings like other Christmas horror movies, much in the spirit of George Bailey's uplifting seasonal journey. It's all bloody, decking the halls with gory delights, but there's also a wholesomeness at the story's core akin to self-affirming modern slashers like "Happy Death Day" or Kennedy's own "Freaky." Imagine a Hallmark holiday special that's hacked to bits by a psychotic killer, more along the lesson-teaching lines of "Krampus" than the repulsive(ly entertaining) violence in "Silent Night."
It's Christmastime in Angel Falls, and high schooler Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop) is hitting all the traditions. There's a tree lighting ceremony led by the town's egomaniacal developer, Henry Waters (Justin Long), and a boozy party for the local teens.

Freaky is one of my favorite horror movies released this decade, so when I heard that Freaky co-writer Michael Kennedy had written a new holiday horror film titled It's a Wonderful Knife (helmed by Tragedy Girls director Tyler MacIntyre), it immediately rose to the top of my must-see list, and the official trailer promises plenty of seasonal scares for horror fans to unwrap when the Christmas-themed slasher is released in theaters on November 10th.
Directed by Tyler MacIntyre and written and produced by Michael Kennedy, It's a Wonderful Knife stars Cassandra Naud, Justin Long, Joel McHale, and Jane Widdop.

It wouldn’t be horror movie season without a couple of trailers for slashers, right? With Eli Roth finally making his “Thanksgiving” trailer from “Grindhouse” a full-blown feature film, it’s safe to assume audiences don’t need another holiday-set slasher this year. Not so fast. Here comes “It’s A Wonderful Knife,” a Christmas slasher that mixes the sub-genre’s formula with the premise of the 1946 holiday classic starring Jimmy Stewart.

It’s been there in front of you the whole time, and only now is it clear that it was possible: what if somebody crossed over :a[It’s A Wonderful Life]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/wonderful-life-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} with a slasher movie? You know, take the film that questions what the world would be like if you never existed in it, and turned into a serial killer flick. You could even give it a genius title, like :a[It’s A Wonderful Knife]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/freaky-writers-next-slasher-mash-up-is-its-a-wonderful-knife/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}. The first trailer for "It's A Wonderful Knife" is here, and it has everything we never knew we needed from a holiday-set slasher: Laura Lee from "Yellowjackets," a killer who looks like Moon Knight, and ... Justin Long with a spray tan?! Long's involvement in the movie — playing chipper Mayor Waters — should make it a must-see anyway given his wild and watchable horror track record, but there are plenty of reasons to get stoked for "It's A Wonderful Knife."
The movie is the latest from "Freaky" writer Michael Kennedy, with "Tragedy Girls" filmmaker Tyler MacIntyre directing. That means "It's A Wonderful Knife" is almost certain to have a sharp comedic edge to it, something that's clear from the first seconds of the trailer when Mayor Waters, looking and sounding weirdly like a Martin Short character, campily declares, "I give you ... Christmas!" The festivities are soon cut short, though, when a...

The opening scene of Netflix's "Yellowjackets" begins with one of the most haunting TV sequences in recent memory. A dark-haired girl in a nightgown runs through a frozen forest, looking scared for her life - and for good reason. As she runs, a pit opens up beneath her feet, and she falls in. The next frames show her limbs nailed to the ground with sticks, and then she's getting hung up by her feet and flayed while a bunch of people clad in animal skins look on. Eventually, after the girl's remains are placed in front of an antler-clad figure, the group devours her.
The specter of that scene haunts all of "Yellowjackets," which tells the story of a girls' soccer team who crash-land in a forest and are forced to survive there for 19 months. Interspersing that story with scenes set 25 years later - when...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Yellowjackets."
Depending on how online you are, you either met this week's big "Yellowjackets" revelation that there's at least one underground room in the forest with an "A-ha!" or a "What the hell?!" Either one is totally valid, as the show has hinted at the existence of some sort of underground system for two seasons — but has done so mostly through dreams and visions.
When Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) spotted a green, mossy tree in the woods that was venting hot air, it actually wasn't the first time we'd seen an out-of-place bit of greenery. In the season premiere, Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) and Travis (Kevin Alves) passed a much smaller (but equally green) stump but didn't put two and two together to realize that growing moss meant warmth and moisture were coming up from underground. Theory-loving fans of the series did,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 6, “Qui.”]
“Yellowjackets” may be a twisted TV drama, but it’s tough to build a case that it pulls the rug out from under its audience. More often than not, things go how you’d expect them to, in a world where the ultimate twist is the one taken by fate when a flight crashed in the Canadian wilderness. Everything that follows, tragic as it is, has an inevitable kind of logic to it.
Episode 6, “Qui,” directed by Liz Garbus and written by Karen Joseph Adcock & Ameni Rozsa, is a crystal clear reminder of that. Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) is in labor, and the inevitability of her pregnancy brings a fierce reality check crashing down on the cabin. It ends up being a checkpoint, revealing every character’s truth in how they respond to the situation. Surprisingly, Misty (Samantha Hanratty) panics; as much as Hanratty embodies a smart little sociopath,...

This post contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2 episode 4.
The girls of "Yellowjackets" went looking for a miracle in the latest episode of Showtime's teen horror survival series, and the one they found out turned out to be a lot different than the one they bargained for. When Lottie (Courtney Eaton) and Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) left for a hunt that doubled as a test of Lottie's burgeoning supernatural abilities, the pair returned home without a juicy moose to share. Yet by the episode's end, Van (Liv Hewson) and Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) made their own triumphant return with another, hopefully, less edible surprise: Javi.
Javi (Luciano Leroux) went missing way back in the penultimate episode of "Yellowjackets" season 1 when he caught the girls in the throes of mushroom-amplified savagery during Doomcoming. Warned to run from the momentarily predatory teammates, the youngest survivor followed orders, and we haven't seen him since. Natalie...

[Editor’s note: This review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 4, “Old Wounds.”]
The Yellowjackets may not have made it to nationals, but in Season 2, Episode 4, the competition is on.
As the winter of their discontent wears on, the stranded high school students and their actively disassociating coach (Steven Kreuger) are running out of food. The situation is so dire that people are ostensibly stealing raw bear meat from the food stores to eat more than their allotted share (or are they? More on this later). It doesn’t help that the group’s only two hunters can’t find any fresh game, or that they didn’t even catch the group’s main meals: the bear that bowed to Lottie (Courtney Eaton) and gave its life in Season 1 and the birds that mysteriously fell on their roof just one episode prior.
All of that comes to the forefront in Season 2, Episode 4, “Old Wounds,” written by Ashley Lyle,...
