The Pitch: Do you like "Halloween Town"? Of course you do, you're clearly a connoisseur of quality cinema. Now, imagine if "Halloween Town" was written by one of those fan-fiction authors who crams every crevice of their story with the kind of detail that would make even J. R. R. Tolkien drool. Now, stop imagining "Halloween Town" because, frankly, you've been holding onto that franchise for too long. It's time to let go. Instead, turn your mind to "The Owl House," an animated series created by Dana Terrace. Henry Gilroy probably wrote your childhood. As a film and television screenwriter, Gilroy's credits include "Batman: The Animated Series," "Jackie Chan Adventures," "Justice League Unlimited," and ""Ultimate Spider-Man." He also wrote for almost every animated series based on a movie, "Lilo & Stitch: The Series" and "DreamWorks Dragons: The Nine Realms," not to mention an extended relationship with the animated "Star Wars" stories. The point is, Gilroy probably knows what he's doing, right? There are simply too many well known credits attached to his name for the guy to be bad at his job.
And yet, even he struggles with studio interference. That's the fun part of the artistic process -- where the people in charge dissect the script and then take away a third of the cool stuff, maybe more. Animation for children deserves more respect, especially lately. In an industry that values profits over artistic risks, kids' animation remains a dismissible art form, and the intelligence of its audience is often underestimated. In 2022, the industry faced HBO Max's purge of several animated projects, an ongoing battle for fair wages, and the abridgement or outright cancelation of numerous shows and movies. Looking back, it's hard to not wonder what might have been.
These obstacles are especially notable given how much animation aimed at children has evolved over the years. A number of 2022's animated projects were particularly inventive and thought-provoking. It was a year full of glorious stop-motion productions, breathtaking visual innovations, and major milestones when it comes to queer visibility. Just remember: For our purposes, "kids" is an inclusive term that refers to both actual children as well as the kid that exists in every adult. With that in mind,...

Streaming services like HBO Max are under fire for mistreating animation studios and creators, but Disney's been a quiet canary in that coal mine. "The Owl House" is a spectacular series about a world of wild magic, and it's never afraid to deal with tough topics like betrayal and emotional abuse. Its story treats its diverse and Lgtbq+ cast with refreshing acceptance. Unfortunately, it's also slated to end with a third season consisting of only three 40-minute episodes. This doesn't stop Disney from trotting out the series for promotion during Pride Month. Creator Dana Terrace is quick to point out the cancellation is likely due to the show's darkness and plot complexity, not any bigotry on the Mouse's part.
That rings hollow for fans desperate for more Eda and Luz, and if you're not a fan yet, you should be. It's a terrific show for anyone, and dark enough to delight older kids.

It’s been a rough first two years for Bob Chapek in Disney’s top job.
First came the pandemic, which started just days into Chapek’s tenure as CEO, bringing the entertainment industry to a halt.
With moviegoing hampered by Covid even after theaters reopened, Disney started releasing movies on streaming, which led to Chapek’s second big challenge: alienating top talent. Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit and the strongly worded public exchanges with Disney that followed drew gasps in Hollywood and raised questions over how the storied studio would treat its biggest stars under Chapek, a Hollywood outsider who came from Disney’s park division.
Now Chapek is facing his biggest test to date: discontent within his own company. The open internal revolt was sparked by Disney’s botched response to Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill which would ban classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender...

The Animation Guild’s Executive Board and QueerTAG Committee posted a response to social media regarding Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek and his lack of action or statement condemning Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
“It is disheartening that Disney, one of the world’s most successful brands with massive resources and a global platform, failed to take any action to help prevent the passage of this bill,” said the group. “It is one thing to say that you ‘unequivocally stand in support of our LGBTQ+ employees, their families, and their communities.’ It’s quite another for you to stand silent while this scurrilous piece of homophobic legislation passes.”
Disney employees at various levels and celebrities are speaking out against the company especially after reports the company donated money to politicians sponsoring the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

As the Walt Disney Co. takes heat for a report detailing how the company has financially backed all of the sponsors of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, employees and artists associated with Disney have taken to social media to criticize its response to the bill.
Particularly upsetting many staffers is CEO Bob Chapek’s memo expressing “unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ+ community” despite the lack of a public statement opposing the bill, which would limit discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
The email, which Chapek sent to Disney staffers on Monday, reads: “In terms of our communities, we are and will continue to be a leader in supporting organizations that champion diversity. In 2021, we provided nearly $3 million to support the work of LGBTQ+ organizations. And, we have a long history of supporting important events like Pride parades.” Directly addressing Disney’s silence on the bill,...

Entertainment Luz Noceda, the protagonist of the show, is a 14-year-old who wants to become a witch.Tnm StaffDisney has given us many warm and memorable animation films, but it is not particularly known for being inclusive in representing the Lgbtqi+ community. Which is why, when it came out that Luz Noceda, the 14-year-old protagonist of a new series on the Disney Channel called The Owl House, is a bisexual character, it was cause for celebration. Luz has made history by becoming Disney’s first bisexual lead. Dana Terrace, who created the series, confirmed the same. On the show, Luz, a teenager, goes to another world to become a witch despite not having magical abilities. Dana said that she was open about her intention to put queer kids in the main cast. Disney is taking more strides toward LGBTQ+ representation with the bisexual lead character of The Owl House.
Series creator Dana Terrace spoke about her Disney Channel series on Twitter, confirming that lead character Luz Noceda is bisexual. Terrace, who is also bisexual, said she intended to reflect her own personal experiences in the animated series and was very open during the development process about featuring lead characters who are queer.
“I’m a horrible liar so sneaking it in would’ve been hard,” she tweeted. “When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could Not represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the Channel.”
But even despite some Disney figures’ hesitation, The Owl House went on to feature a queer character as its lead. The Disney channel show follows 14-year-old Luz who seeks to become a witch, despite her lack of magical abilities.

The Disney Channel animated series “The Owl House” has made history by having Disney’s first bisexual lead character.
Luz Noceda, the show’s 14-year-old protagonist, is a normal teen who goes on a journey to another world to become a witch. Luz has shown she’s attracted to male characters in the show, and in the two most recent episodes, “Enchanting Grom Fright” and “Wing It Like Witches,” a relationship between Luz and the recurring female character Amity is explored. It is revealed that Amity had intentions to ask Luz to Grom, their world’s version of Prom, and the two share a dance together.
Series creator Dana Terrace substantiated viewers’ theories on Twitter that this was indeed a portrayal of an LGBTQ relationship — something that some Disney leaders weren’t always keen on having in the show.

With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons.
The 3,500-member Animation Guild, Iatse Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of Iatse’s 13 West Coast studio locals.
The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. In what is always one of the highest-profile events at France’s Annecy Animation Festival, Disney held their yearly presentation on Tuesday night, detailing their upcoming slate of new and returning programs, highlighted by the announcement of the new Emea series “Vikingskool,” and early looks at U.S. series “The Owl House” and “The Rocketeer.”
Disney shared the first images from “The Owl House” and “The Rocketeer” exclusively with Variety, seen below.
This year’s presentation was fronted by Svp for Disney International Media Emea Hélène Etzi; VP of Content for Animation, Digital and Acquisitions Emea Orion Ross; and Nancy Kanter, Evp, Content and Creative Strategy, Disney Channels Worldwide, and General Manager, Disney Junior Worldwide.
Targeting 6-11 year-olds, “Vikingskool” had been on Disney’s radar for some time. Originally pitched towards more mature audiences, Ross was impressed and kept the proposed series in mind on the chance it could be adapted to Disney’s demographic.
