Netflix should have seen this coming. Already in the middle of a whitewashing controversy over their latest Marvel television series “Iron Fist,” the streaming giant is under fire again for the same issue because of their upcoming film adaptation of the manga series “Death Note.” The teaser trailer premiered last week, featuring “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Palo Alto” actor Nat Wolff in the lead role, and backlash quickly erupted over the whitewashed casting, which extends to nearly every role in the film.

Sarah Rose started an online petition against the movie in the wake of the trailer’s release, claiming it “shouldn’t be cast with all white actors, as it goes against the very soul of the story.” The petition has a goal of 12,000 signatures and has already eclipsed the 11,000 mark as of this writing.

As we reported previously, the "Zoolander 2" trailer stirred up a mini-controversy late last month over the reveal of Benedict Cumberbatch's androgynous character, who at one point during the trailer is asked by Owen Wilson's Hansel: "Do you have a hot dog or a bun?" The scene in question so offended viewer Sarah Rose that the activist went so far as to start a petition calling for a boycott of the film, in which Rose charges the makers of the comedy sequel with using "the modern equivalent of...blackface to represent a minority." Rose took further umbrage at the hiring of a "cisgender" (non-transgender) actor to portray the character. Now "Zoolander 2" co-screenwriter Justin Theroux -- who played a minor role in the first film -- has responded to the outrage in a new interview with The Wrap. During the sit-down, Theroux states that the Cumberbatch scene was being taken out of context,...

Welcome to Outrage Watch, HitFix's semi-regular rundown of entertainment-related kerfuffles. Not anxious enough already? Get your fix of righteous indignation below, and stay posted for outrage updates throughout the week. Does Benedict Cumberbatch's "Zoolander 2" character represent the equivalent of "blackface" for the "androgyne/trans/non-binary" community? Sarah Rose seems to think so -- and now the activist has started a petition calling for a boycott of the film, in which the "Sherlock" star plays an androgynous supermodel who, in the film's recently-released trailer, is asked by Owen Wilson's character whether he or she has "a hot dog or a bun?" "Cumberbatch’s character is clearly portrayed as an over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals," reads the petition. "This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority. "If the producers and screenwriters of Zoolander wanted to provide social commentary on the presence of...

Zoolander 2 won’t be hitting theaters until next year, but its newly released trailer already has Lgbt activists up in arms, calling the film “harmful and dangerous.” An online petition created by Sarah Rose calls for an all out boycott of the Ben Stiller movie, arguing that a new character played by Benedict Cumberbatch – a supermodel named “All” — is offensive for its “representation of non-binary individuals.” “In the “Zoolander 2” trailer,” the petition reads, “an androgynous character played by Benedict Cumberbatch is asked by Zoolander and Hansel if he is a ‘male or female model,’ and if they ‘have a.
