European Film Promotion has revealed the participants for its Producers on the Move program, which runs before and during the Cannes Film Festival.
The promotion and networking program, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, brings together 20 of Europe’s most promising producers. This year, Efp will also put a spotlight on the numerous collaborations that have developed between the around 500 participants from 37 European countries over the past quarter century.
The 20 producers were selected for the program from the nominations submitted by Efp’s member organizations, which are all European national film promotion institutes.

Imagine a mother raising a large family, nurturing her children from birth, tending to their every need, only to have them plucked from her, not knowing where they’ve been taken. Imagine the mother’s panic and worry.
This is the scenario of Gunda, the Oscar-shortlisted documentary by Victor Kossakovsky. Does it matter that Gunda is a sow and her family a litter of piglets? Not to the director. The inescapable inference from his film is that Gunda experiences emotions just as humans do, and when her children are suddenly snatched, trucked off to slaughter, she suffers terrible emotional distress.
“If you look to Gunda, you see her soul,” Kossakovsky tells Deadline. “Even a chicken has intellect, even a cow has intellect…Don’t be stupid, people. Intellect is not our specialty as creatures.”
The Russian-born director, it will come as no surprise, is an ardent defender of animals and against killing them for food.

Another precursor has chimed in, this one focused on the documentary genre. Last night, the International Documentary Association held their 36th Annual awards ceremony. There, the IDA Awards tapped Crip Camp as its Best Feature winner, beating fellow nominees Collective, Gunda, MLK/FBI, The Reason I Jump, Reunited, Time, The Truffle Hunters, and Welcome to Chechnya. It was a good victory for Netflix and Higher Ground (Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s company), as they seek to make it back to back wins at the Academy Awards in Best Documentary Feature. The International Documentary Association has announced the nominees for its 36th Annual IDA Documentary Awards, and a certain streaming service dominates. Netflix scored a leading 18 noms for the 2020 IDAs, more than three times its nearest rival. PBS is second with five, followed by HBO (four).
The IDA also said today that its 2020 ceremony is going virtual on January 21.
“The nominees present an inspiring and urgent range of stories from around the globe,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA. “The broad range of subjects and approaches to storytelling underscores that documentary is our most exciting form of cultural expression, a vital art form and a crucial element of democratic dialogue.”
Ten films are up for the marquee Best Feature award: Collective, Crip Camp (Netflix), Gunda (Neon), MLK/FBI (IFC Films), The Reason I Jump (Kino Lorber), Reunited, Softie, Time, The Truffle Hunters (Sony Pictures Classics) and Welcome to Chechnya (HBO).
The helmers of five of those films also are up for Best Director: Garrett Bradley (Time), Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw (The Truffle Hunters), Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp), Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI) and Jerry Rothwell (The Reason I Jump).

The IDA also said today that its 2020 ceremony is going virtual on January 21.
“The nominees present an inspiring and urgent range of stories from around the globe,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA. “The broad range of subjects and approaches to storytelling underscores that documentary is our most exciting form of cultural expression, a vital art form and a crucial element of democratic dialogue.”
Ten films are up for the marquee Best Feature award: Collective, Crip Camp (Netflix), Gunda (Neon), MLK/FBI (IFC Films), The Reason I Jump (Kino Lorber), Reunited, Softie, Time, The Truffle Hunters (Sony Pictures Classics) and Welcome to Chechnya (HBO).
The helmers of five of those films also are up for Best Director: Garrett Bradley (Time), Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw (The Truffle Hunters), Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp), Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI) and Jerry Rothwell (The Reason I Jump).

This week, the BIFAs will unveil its various longlists of awards, which will be whittled down to its final nominations, to be revealed on December 9.
Today, the New Talent awards longlists have been unveiled, featuring a total of 46 directors, writers and producers. Each of the below will participate in BIFA’s Springboard scheme, a tailored program of professional development and peer to peer support.

Screen revealed last week that passionate animal rights advocate Joaquin Phoenix came onboard as executive producer, describing the project as a “mesmerising perspective on sentience within animal species.”
Gunda, which Kossakovsky also wrote alongside Ainara Vera, is a black and white meditation on the lives of the eponymous sow and other farm animals.
Sant & Usant produced the project, which is a co-production with Louverture Films.

Neon is continuing its busy streak and picked up the North American rights to the documentary “Gunda,” which premiered at the Berlinale festival and is executive produced by Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, the studio announced Tuesday. It’s the first sale of a festival title.

Victor Kossakovsky, whose high-profile ecological documentary “Aquarela” was made with Participant Media and is world premiering at Venice, is currently shooting “Krogufant,” a documentary conveying the emotional intelligence of cows, pigs and chicken.
“‘Krogufant’ will only show animals living and interacting with each others — no humans, no slaughter are part of it,” said the Russian filmmaker, whose previous credits include “¡Vivan las antípodas!,” “Tishe!” and “Belovy.” “What you will see is how intelligent, caring, empathetic and clever these animals are, and how wrong we are to assume that they’re stupid and only worthy to be consumed,” said Kossakovsky.
The helmer is working on “Krogufant” with Norwegian producer Anita Rehoff Larsen at Sant & Usant. The pair previously worked together on the documentary “Varicella.”
