Trap doors were production design secrets when it came to building one of the toughest games on Netflix’s “Squid Game: The Challenge.” Games production designer Ben Norman needed to retain the look of the Netflix drama series while making the sets completely immersive for the players.
456 players suited in green tracksuits had to compete in a series of change and strategy games for a prize of $4.56 million. As with the original “Squid Game,” challenges include Green Light/Red Light, Mystery Telephone and even Kitchen Nightmares. As the players dwindled, the games got harder.
In Episode 7 “Friend or Foe,” with just 20 players left, the Glass Bridge challenge required players to carefully choose a glass panel. Pick the wrong one and you fall off. Pick the right one and it’s onto the next panel.
Aside from having to construct the bridge, Norman had to figure out how the contestants would...

We shouldn’t be allowed to call “Squid Game” dystopian now that Netflix has built the torment nexus, but the sheer scale of the streamer’s new reality series, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” is impressive. Big reality elimination challenge shows like “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” and “The Amazing Race” feature contestants in the double, not triple, digits. While “Squid Game: The Challenge” settles on squibs instead of actual bullets, the logistical hurdles involved in blowing up narrative sequences and making them practical as games — for hundreds of players — are legion.
Filmed over 16 days at a series of six interconnected studios in London, “Squid Game: The Challenge” features representations of the unnervingly cheerful “Squid Game” work of production designer Chae Kyoung-sun and the iconic costumes created by designer Jo Sang-gyeong, as well as inclusion of composer Jung Jae-il’s score and a penchant for recreating the deliciously painful slo-mo editing of games perfected by editor Nam Na-young.

“Squid Game: The Challenge” has to literalize, at human scale, the games the original Hwang Dong-hyuk series takes an (understandably) limited, narrative perspective through. It’s both a production design and game design problem to solve: How much space do 456 people need to play a game of red light/green light? How can you build a glass bridge that’s safe enough to jump on but high enough to hurl into an abyss the players who fail?
Even the smallest details — like creating a Dalgona cookie recipe that was of a uniform thickness and consistency — took almost 20 tries to get right. But the way that “Squid Game: The Challenge” realizes its games is also illustrative of how all reality game shows organize their challenges and the qualities that make them so appealing to watch.
Some of the “Squid Game” challenges weren’t possible to pull off in real life or needed to be structurally rethought.
