Season three of "La Reina del Sur" is finally here, and it's been a long time coming. The Telemundo series has been in the works for over a decade, and it stars Kate del Castillo as Teresa Mendoza, an unlikely cartel queenpin who rises through the ranks of the drug-smuggling world with nothing but her grit and street smarts. This season will show Mendoza in a way we've never seen her, as a spy and as a mother desperately trying to reunite with her daughter, Sofia. For 60 episodes, viewers will follow Mendoza's dangerous adventures through Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, and Mexico as part of her new mission to end her life as a fugitive once and for all. "The whole story is growing and maturing in so many ways," del Castillo tells Popsugar. "You're going to see a Teresa Mendoza that we all love but more [of a] warrior. She's a warrior,...

Law & Order: Svu Season 24’s second episode finds Benson in the Bronx for a sex-crimes case involving gang activity. As she tangles with the unit’s chief (Maurice Compte) over jurisdiction, she notices how skillfully his detective Grace Muncy empathizes with a young female victim. Impressed, says exec producer David Graziano, “Benson brings her into the Svu.” Mariska Hargitay herself suggested an emotional arc exploring “how Benson looks inward to recognize her trauma” — including her torture by psychopath William Lewis and perceived abandonment by Stabler — “and heal herself,” says fellow EP Julie Martin. The goal? “To become a better captain, friend and mother, and possibly consider a relationship.” Meanwhile, Martin predicts “bumps” for Det. Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) and Ada Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) but says, “Their love will prevail.” Still, Giddish is departing this season. Playing the anti-hero Teresa Mendoza in Telemundo’s hit drama “La Reina del Sur” (Queen of the South) has become second nature to its star, Kate del Castillo. In a way, her hectic career as a producer, actor and entrepreneur, mirrors her character’s upstream struggle against patriarchy — sans the guns and contraband.
Speaking via Zoom from the U.K. where she’s working on the indie film “A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea & Tomorrow” with director Katherine Fairfax Wright, del Castillo reflected on the parallels between managing the challenges of her multi-faceted career with those faced by Mendoza in the show’s long-awaited third season, which premieres Oct. 18 on Telemundo. “La Reina” is a co-production of Telemundo and Netflix, which has international rights to the series.
The new season sees the titular La Reina taking on the brutal male-dominated cartels of South America once again, picking up four years after U.

It’s hard to be a woman in a world where men are perceived as the best criminal masterminds. The final season of USA Network’s drama “Queen of the South” dropped this week, and to see the conclusion of drug queenpin Teresa Mendoza’s (Alice Braga) story is bittersweet. Teresa’s presence in the narco landscape was unique — from a media perspective, women in this world are often relegated to mules, victims, and sex workers, or a combination of all three. Teresa was never a victim, but instead used the drug world to call out its horrors, leading the audience to question her altruism in a world that does inherently hurt others.

Teresa Mendoza will always be one step ahead, even in death.
Queen of the South’s series finale, written by showrunners Benjamin Lobato and Dailyn Rodriguez, follows the sequence of events after Teresa’s (Alice Braga) assassination. Newcomer Samara recounts the moment of Teresa’s death to officials and bids farewell to Pote (Hemky Madera), who witnesses the cremation of his friend and decides to travel back to Culiacán to spread her ashes.
Meanwhile, James (Peter Gadiot) texts Devon (Jaime Hector) pictures of Teresa’s body at the morgue, confirming that he’s kept his end of the bargain. Over in New Orleans, Boaz (Joseph T. My heart is still racing after Queen of the South Season 5 Episode 7!
That was a particularly high intensity episode that had me rooting for some characters, berating others, and praying no more of my favorites end up dead before the series is over.
But Teresa needs to get her head in the game and take out Boaz for good.
Turning Marcel over to the police instead of Boaz was a mistake.
Yes, Boaz's knowledge of the inner workings of her business made him both a valuable ally and a terrible risk. There likely would have been hiccups in the operation if Boaz was yanked out of it with no notice, and he could have easily cut a deal with the Feds to save himself.
But hiccups can be overcome, and Teresa could have had Boaz killed in prison and ended his liability.

Teresa Mendoza's world is far from black and white, but her fashion choice was just that during Queen of the South Season 5 Episode 4.
Teresa skipped her signature white suit to go with a half black, half white outfit, which seemed to symbolize the line she walked between what was necessary and expedient.
Teresa had previously felt she had no choice but to turn Marcel Dumas over to the authorities to save Boaz and her operation, but killing Captain Gamble was more of a grey area.
As much as Teresa tried to make amends with Dumas and get him out of jail, her efforts got her nowhere on both fronts.
You can keep your coke and your bullshit apologies. I'd rather my people starve than be in business with you.

Teresa knows how to run her business, and she was in command throughout Queen of the South Season 5 Episode 2.
Unfortunately, there were things that even Teresa Mendoza could not control or predict.
Teresa longs to start a legitimate business, and the waterfront property is the lynchpin. She wants to come out of the darkness and into the light. She wants to be recognized as a power player in business and not just a cartel leader.
I still worry about that property. Who doubled the price and why? Did they bid that high hoping to avoid a bidding war, or does someone know Teresa's plan and want to force her to shell out the extra $100 million?
And is it a coincidence that James returned just as Teresa was told she needed to hand over more cash?
I don't want to distrust James, but he's been gone a long time. Is there...

To watch Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) over five seasons of USA Network’s “Queen of the South” is to examine femininity both within the narco culture and within the Latino community. The show has looked at human trafficking, sex work, and rape within the confines of the cocaine business, but also cast an eye towards the culture of misogyny that often boxes women in to be nothing more than compliant, happy wives. Teresa, as Braga herself describes her, is a survivor: A naïve girl transformed into the boss she was always meant to be.
Braga has created fantastic characters, from her role as Angelica in the 2002 feature “City of God” to her most recent work in HBO’s “We Are Who We Are.” But “Queen of the South” was not only Braga’s first foray into television, it was also her first time leading a television series. When USA Network premiered “Queen of the South” in June 2016, reviewers immediately started comparing it to Netflix’s “Narcos.” Like that series, “Queen of the South” told the story of Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga), a Culican moneychanger who eventually becomes the “Queen of Cocaine.” But what the series has done over the following five seasons is to not strictly focus on the narco lifestyle popularized in 1983’s “Scarface,” but to emphasize how drug culture exploits women and minorities.
Teresa and the crew she’s assembled over the years have forced audiences to look at misogyny in Latino culture and beyond, the nature of identity, and how white people have been breaking the law for centuries and profited handsomely. “In the first episode of Season 4 Teresa says a lot of successful American families started with crime. Why not us?” said Dailyn Rodriguez, series co-showrunner, to IndieWire. Showrunners Rodriguez and Benjamin Lobato...

As president of NBCUniversal’s Telemundo Global Studios, Marcos Santana has spearheaded the U.S. Hispanic network’s headlong drive into a challenging era where global streaming platforms dominate and legacy networks are reassessing their place in the television universe.
A raging pandemic has also spiked production challenges. His previous positions as president o f production unit Telemundo International Studios and of distribution arm Telemundo International has given him a holistic perspective on the biz.
Telemundo International Studios, which Santana founded in 2016, took on the shifts in international viewing habits and demands by creating high-end short-form scripted formats and launching big-budgeted Spanish-language premium series, which invariably call for more special effects and locations.
Reigning above the latter now is “Queen of the South,” starring Kate del Castillo, which is in pre-production on its third season, which Netflix will again co-produce as it did the second season.

In Season 3, Teresa struck out on her own, determined to build a new empire for herself. But as enemies old and new closed in, she realized that being queen would require more work — and more sacrifice — than she ever imagined.

The trials of Teresa Mendoza have been very good for Telemundo.
The sophomore season of the network’s hit series “La Reina del Sur” (Queen of the South) went out on a high note Monday, grabbing 2.2 million viewers and 1.1 million in the adults 18-49 demographic. That was strong enough to make Telemundo the No. 1 network over all broadcast rivals in “La Reina’s” 10 p.m. time slot.
The crime thriller telenovela starring Kate del Castillo has given a competitive boost to NBCUniversal’s Spanish-language network, solidifying its lead over rival Univision in primetime in adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. Throughout its 60-episode run, which began April 22, “La Reina” kept Telemundo broadcast network among the top 3 networks regardless of language in the adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 demos in the 10 p.m. Monday-Friday berth.
“We have had exceptional results from ‘La Reina’ especially in this period where the television industry is facing many challenges,...

When Queen of the South Season 1 began, Pote Galvez was the hitman sent to kill Teresa Mendoza and her best friend. Now the sicario is Mendoza's right-hand man, valiant protector, and someone she considers family.
What makes Pote different from other assassins in the world of narco TV? Can his newfound romance with Kelly Anne possibly last? And what kind of fun has both Pote and his portrayer found in the kitchen?
Recently, I chatted with actor Hemky Madera about that, another season of Queen of the South, and what else he has on the horizon.
What made you want to play the role of Pote?
I was familiar with the project because of the soap opera, the telenovela, and then I auditioned for it and then read the book.
I really enjoyed that character that chases her and then becomes her protector.
So I thought that was a pretty cool role to jump into.
