A neighborhood holiday house-decorating contest intensifies to an unbelievable degree in Reginald Hudlin’s peculiar Christmas film, Candy Cane Lane. The stakes are high for Chris Carver (Eddie Murphy), a Yuletide obsessive determined to win first place for the most festive home in his neighborhood. Every year, he comes in second to his irritating neighbor, Bruce (Ken Marino). This season will be different — although not in the way Chris expects.
It starts with a layoff. After being unexpectedly and unceremoniously fired from his job, Chris finds himself bereft of purpose. He struggles to tell his family the truth and urges his wife Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross) to keep the news between them. Instead of being honest with his three kids, Chris vows to make this Christmas the best one ever. His daughter, Joy (Genneya Walton), is going off to college next year, which means Carver family gatherings won’t be the same.

Yes, it’s good to be the king. But sometimes it’s nearly as good to be part of a legacy project initiated four decades ago by indisputable Hollywood comedy royalty — in this case, legendary writer, director, producer and performer Mel Brooks’ “The History of the World, Part 2.”
That was the prevailing spirit among the all-star assembly of contemporary comedy stars who turned out for the premiere of Hulu’s long-awaited follow-up to Brooks’ 1981 comedy classic “The History of the World, Part I,” the bulk of whom appear in the irreverent, sketch-style series and worship at the altar of the signature uproarious style of its creator, who – at age 96 – also serves as executive producer, narrator and overall guiding light.
On the red carpet at the Hollywood Legion Theater, Nick Kroll, executive producer on the series alongside Wanda Sykes and Ike Barinholtz, said the trio’s extensive relationships across the comedy...

Jessica Biel is stepping into the shoes of one of true crime’s most notorious killers in the first trailer for Hulu’s “Candy.”
Biel stars in the series as Candy Montgomery, a seemingly normal housewife in small town Wylie, Tex., who was convicted in 1980 for the brutal axe murder of her neighbor Betty Gore, played in the show by Melanie Lynskey.
The teaser trailer shows Biel transform into Candy, with curly hair and large rimmed-glasses. Footage of her going about her daily life in suburbia is juxtaposed with narration from her trial, as a lawyer played by Raúl Esparza (“Hannibal”) questions her about her relationship with Betty.
“I had no angry feelings towards her if that’s what the question is,” Biel says in the trailer. “We were…friends.”
In addition to Biel, Lynskey and Esparza, “Candy” will also star Timothy Simmons (“Veep”) as Candy’s husband Pat Montgomery...

It’s Christmas! On Hulu, at least. The romantic holiday comedy Happiest Season — which premieres on the streamer this week — stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis as Abby and Harper, respectively, a loving queer couple who’ve reached the “meet the parents” checkpoint in their relationship. This is a slightly dicier prospect for queer couples than for their straight peers, in that it comes with certain preliminary hurdles — not only “Hey mom and dad, I’m bringing someone home,” but also, “Hey mom and dad: I’m gay.” One ideally...

It’s been just two years since Alec Baldwin won this category for his Donald Trump impersonation on “Saturday Night Live,” but after another nomination last year we think the Emmy favorite will miss out this time around. That means there is room for a new contender and our guess is Timothy Simmons makes the cut for “Veep.” His role is more pronounced in the series final season than Matt Walsh who was nominated in 2017 and 2016.
