In the history of the GDMAs thus far, Swift is the only artist who has won Artist of the Year. She’s also the only artist who has won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. But her Album of the Year victory for “Midnights” is only her second in that race. She previously won in 2021 for “Folklore,” but Lana Del Rey claimed that honor in 2022 for “Chemtrails Over the Country Club” and Beyonce prevailed in 2023 for “Renaissance.”

The 65th Grammy Awards take place on Sunday 5 February, with music fans preparing for the rematch of the century: Adele vs Beyoncé.
Both artists are up for Album of the Year, six years after Adele took home the top prize for her third record, 25. The win over Beyoncé’s critically adored surprise album Lemonade was highly controversial; Adele herself famously declared that Beyoncé deserved the prize during her acceptance speech.
This year, the British singer is competing with her record-obliterating fourth album, 30, released in 2021. A four-star review in The Independent praised the songs as “handsomely crafted ballads about love and its various agonies”, with Adele’s voice, as ever, the main draw. “Adele possesses that perfectly imperfect voice, gargantuan and frail all at once,” critic Annabel Nugent wrote. “It’s epic without resorting to showy, melismatic affectations. It yawns into unexpected shapes and makes intonation fun.”

When Lizzo first proclaimed, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 that bitch” on her breakout single “Truth Hurts,” the phrase almost immediately became inseparable from her artistic brand. In 2019, the musician expressed interest in trademarking the phrase for later use on clothing and merchandise. And after nearly four years, following denials and lawsuits claiming plagiarism, Lizzo has finally won the right to plaster “100 that bitch” across any piece of apparel she wants.

“Come on. I’m very good at music, man,” Lizzo declared in an interview with Zane Lowe this week, as if this were an unstated or under-stated thing that needed to be said out loud.
You know, she’s not a liar.
So let’s just say that Beyonce has her work cut out for her. Not that this month ain’t big enough for both of the household mononyms that want to come at us with new music, but the line on Bey’s forthcoming record is that it might mark a return to dance vibes and good times. And now, in her own great tradition of being extra, Lizzo has come out with an album that feels like it provides all the clubby, poppy endorphins a populace could really require for a single summer. Please, by all means, bring on the second course in a couple of weeks…...

And now, in her own great tradition of being extra, Lizzo has come out with an album that feels like it provides all the clubby, poppy endorphins a populace could really require for a single summer. Please, by all means, bring on the second course in a couple of weeks…...

The methods of expressing and receiving love can be the hardest communication to decipher. At the close of her just-out fourth studio album, Special, Lizzo delivers an ode to all the hopeless romantics who share those hard-to-express feelings by creating playlists and sharing music as a symbolic romantic language.
“Coldplay” lands at the conclusion of an LP that explores love through the lens of self-acceptance, self-sabotage, and the tug-of-war between fantasy and reality. Interestingly, the closing chapter of her journey through self-reflection opens with lyrics written over two decades ago...

The 2022 Grammy Awards broadcast wrapped up with an upset victory of sorts, with Jon Batiste beating out the likes of Taylor Swift and Kanye west to take home Album of the Year for his excellent “We Are.”
That was his fifth win of the night, following four wins during the “Premiere Ceremony,” where all of the awards not deemed cool enough for television were handed out, hosted by the always wonderful Levar Burton.
Batiste also accomplished a rather ignominious milestone for the Grammy Awards themselves: He’s the first Black artist to win Album of the Year since Herbie Hancock back in 2008. You read that right: It’s literally been 14 years and 3 presidents since the Academy recognized the work of Black artists with this honor. And in case you’re wondering, the only nonwhite artist to win Best Album during that time was Bruno Mars in 2018.

The producer Ricky Reed is joined by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and the rising singer Duendita on the regretful ballad “Us (How Sweet It Was).” While the plaintive keyboard and yearning lines from James — “If I had only known how long I wouldn’t see you” — reach back to gifted Seventies balladeers like Todd Rundgren, the smears of autotune and click-pop drum programming ground this song in the present. Duendita adds her own handsomely multi-tracked vocals, quietly commanding the second half of the song.

This is the sixth installment of Rolling Stone‘s Music in Crisis series, which looks at how people all across the music industry are coping with the coronavirus pandemic.
On March 15, as several states were getting close to ordering residents to shelter in place, the writer-producer Ricky Reed (Lizzo, Halsey, Kesha) published an open letter addressed to the songwriting community. “Stop doing the things you really don’t want to stop doing,” he wrote. “No sessions. No meetings. No shows. No going to packed bars. No eating at restaurants. No brunch.

Ricky Reed, a producer behind four songs on Lizzo’s Grammy-winning Cuz I Love You album — six, if you’re looking at the deluxe version, which includes megahit “Truth Hurts” — is imploring musicians, songwriters, producers, artists, and executives to press pause on songwriting sessions, meetings and shows. And “no going to packed bars,” Reed added in his Medium post this week. “No eating at restaurants. No brunch. (In South Korea one person attended church and a buffet lunch and was responsible for infecting 1,000 people! Again, no brunch!).”

Three songwriters have filed a countersuit against Lizzo, reasserting their claim that they helped write the pop star’s breakout smash “Truth Hurts,” but were not properly credited on the song.
The suit was filed by brothers Justin and Jeremiah Raisen, and Justin “Yves” Rothman, who claim “Truth Hurts” emerged from a writing session with Lizzo and Jesse Saint John that produced a song called “Healthy.” They allege that “Healthy” contained elements that later appeared in “Truth Hurts,” including the memorable line, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch.

Lizzo is finally speaking out after being hit with plagiarism accusations over her single, "Truth Hurts." The 31-year-old singer took to social media on Oct. 23 to share a statement addressing the songwriters who claim that she lifted her popular lyric, "I just took a DNA test, turns out I'm 100 percent that bitch," from a song she wrote with them in 2017.
"As I've stated before, in 2017, while working on a demo, I saw a meme that resonated with me, a meme that made me feel like 100% that bitch," she explained. "I sang that line in the demo, and I later used the line in 'Truth Hurts.' The men who now claim a piece of 'Truth Hurts' did not help me write any part of the song. They had nothing to do with the line or how I chose to sing it. There was no one in the room when I wrote 'Truth Hurts,...

Following the release of “For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones),” on Sunday morning Columbia Records and HBO released the official music video for the album’s lead single “Power Is Power” by Sza, The Weeknd and Travis Scott. The visual was directed by Anthony Mandler and shot in Los Angeles and is perhaps most remarkable for the hilarious sight of the artists, dressed in outfits inspired by the show, stalking or writhing around sets inspired by the show (Scott’s setting is actually low-key compared with his concert staging), with dragons and the Night King looming in the background.
“We’re taking established artists and pulling them into the ‘Game of Thrones’ world,” says Mandler. “The show establishes all these different kingdoms and worlds. What I want to do is integrate the color palettes of winter, the warmer tones and match that with today’s biggest stars.

Four days into the new year, Lizzo released the first great song of 2019. The Minneapolis singer-rapper-flautist specializes in propulsive self-empowerment anthems — feel-good songs about feeling good about yourself — and “Juice” may be her finest yet, a near-perfect retro-funk nugget that would have felt just right on a mirror-balled dance floor in 1982. Over a burnished throwback groove, Lizzo praises the woman in the mirror, sips Grey Goose and mocks a man who slides into her DMs. Produced by Ricky Reed (who plays guitar, accompanied by a full band and three-piece horn...

Kesha is marking the one-year anniversary of Rainbow with a new behind-the-scenes documentary, which premieres on Apple Music on August 10th. In an exclusive clip from the film, Kesha navigates a surreal forest, which serves as a metaphor for the emotions she was going through at the time.

What is Christina Aguilera feeling emancipated from? you may ask, digging into “Liberation,” her first album in close to six years. One track offers some tantalizing clues. “I ain’t built for no fake shit,” she wails, almost gutturally, over rock guitars and faux crowd noise produced by Anderson .Paak. “It’s good pay,” she additionally points out, but “I can’t move with these chains on me / I had to get free. … This ain’t a game to me.” The song title: “Sick of Sittin’.” Now, if it were any other star expressing an animus toward chairs, we might think she was speaking figuratively. But it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to divine that this openly disenchanted ex-“Voice” jurist really has written one of the few breakup songs ever to celebrate splitting up with a TV show.

With his second album, “Good Thing,” Leon Bridges has adroitly managed to escape the trap set by his first. But let’s take a moment to point out what a beautiful trap it was. That debut, 2015’s “Coming Home,” was a star-maker for all the right reasons, turning the young Texan into an instant amphitheater headliner and a favorite of no less a cultural arbiter than President Obama on the basis of how preternaturally he was able to channel a certain brand of early ’60s R&B. The album sounded like it was recorded on actual equipment from the era, and his pleated suits looked as if they’d laid amid the world’s gentlest mothballs since then too. But the best part about it was how little Bridges seemed to care about being a revivalist, as great as he was as it. He just happened to be a man possessed — even though,...
