This summer, like many before, a lot of people won’t wear sunblock. The difference you might notice this year is just how many are proudly posting about it.
James Middleton is a fitness coach in the U.K., with a wellness brand that reaches about a quarter of a million people on Instagram. While impressive in its own way, this makes him neither a dermatologist nor an oncologist. But on Twitter last month, Middleton urged followers to dispense with sunscreen, arguing that the vitamin D produced by the human...

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. convened a panel of health misinformation superstars on Tuesday evening for a roundtable discussion that suggested his medical conspiracism will be a key component of his 2024 presidential run. During the unfiltered conversation, he falsely suggested that millions of deaths in the Great Influenza (or “Spanish flu”) epidemic of 1918 could be attributed to vaccine experiments.

Dan Bongino, the right-wing commentator and Fox News host, was permanently banned by YouTube for trying to bypass the platform’s suspension of one of his accounts over a violation of the platform’s Covid-19 misinformation policy.
Bongino’s two YouTube channels, including his main channel that most recently had about 882,000 subscribers, have been removed from the platform. In addition, he is barred from establishing any YouTube channels in the future.
“We terminated Dan Bongino’s channels for circumventing our Terms of Service by posting a video while there was an active strike and suspension associated with the account,” a YouTube rep said in a statement to Variety. “When a channel receives a strike, it is against our Terms of Service to post content or use another channel to circumvent the suspension. If a channel is terminated, the uploader is unable to use, own or create any other YouTube channels.

YouTube is broadening its crackdown on vaccine misinformation, instituting an outright ban on all videos that contain lies about any vaccines that have been approved by the World Health Organization (Who) or local health authorities, and not just Covid-19 -- for which it has already had policies in place since November.
YouTube also already prohibits other forms of medical misinformation, it noted, including content that promoted harmful remedies for Covid or other diseases. And since last year, it says it has removed over 130,000 videos for spreading Covid-19 vaccine misinformation.
NBC News reports that in tandem with the new policy, YouTube will ban the accounts of prominent anti-vax creators including Joseph Mercola and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

YouTube has removed the accounts of anti-vaccine activists Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Joseph Mercola and others as part of a crackdown on misinformation.
Kennedy had already been booted off Instagram last February for continually spreading false information about Covid-19 vaccines. Before the pandemic, he had already been a prominent skeptic of vaccines in general.
In a blog post, the company said it would remove content that falsely alleges that approved vaccines are dangerous and cause chronic health effects. Also banned will be claims that vaccines do not reduce transmission or contraction of disease, or misinformation on the substances contained in vaccines. False claims that vaccines cause autism, cancer or infertility, or that substances in them can track those who receive them will also no longer fly.
“Crafting policy around medical misinformation comes charged with inherent challenges and tradeoffs,” the blog post said. “Scientific understanding evolves as new research emerges, and firsthand,...

Joe Biden clarified his comment about the spread of misinformation on social media platforms, drawing pushback from Facebook after the president seemed to suggest that it was “killing people” by letting false claims about the Covid-19 spread across its platform.
On Friday, Biden was asked, “On the topic of disinformation, what’s your message to platforms like Facebook?” He responded, “They’re killing people. Look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and they’re killing people.”
Biden said on Monday that he was reacting to a report that 60% of the misinformation about the vaccine on Facebook came from 12 individuals.
“Facebook isn’t killing people,” Biden said. “These 12 people are out there giving misinformation. Anyone listening to it is getting hurt by it. It’s killing people. It’s bad information. My hope is that Facebook, instead of taking it personally that somehow I am saying that Facebook is killing people,...

Updated, with Facebook response: President Joe Biden lashed out at social media platforms as the conduits for the spread of misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccines, reflecting the concern that the White House has over the spread of the Delta variant among the unvaccinated.
As Biden left for Camp David on Friday, NBC News’ Peter Alexander asked Biden, “On the topic of disinformation, what’s your message to platforms like Facebook?”
“They’re killing people,” Biden said. “Look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and they’re killing people.”
Facebook has defended its actions to root out disinformation on their platform, but the White House has called for the company to take greater steps.
In response to Biden’s comment, Facebook spokesperson Dani Lever said in a statement, “We will not be distracted by accusations which aren’t supported by the facts. The fact is that more than...
