Amplify Pictures, the independent television studio behind HBO’s Emmy-winning “100 Foot Wave,” has made a pair of hires. It has tapped Rachel Eggebeen as its chief content officer and Colin King Miller as its chief operating officer. The veteran executives will take founding partnership roles alongside Amplify Pictures CEO Joe Lewis.
“It’s a time of expansion,” Lewis told Variety in an interview. “We’re growing our team and becoming more global.”
At the same time, Amplify has sold a minority stake to Great Mountain Partners. It is understood that the deal values Amplify at $50 million. The funding will be used to back more production of original series of both the unscripted and scripted variety. The Patient (FX) The Patient
Most episodes of FX’s The Patient stick with the perspective of Steve Carell’s Alan Strauss, a therapist held captive by a serial killer portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. But in the seventh episode, “Kaddish,” the camera zooms out. As Alan says the Jewish prayer of mourning for both his dead wife and himself, director Gwyneth Horder-Payton photographs Carell through a rain-stained window in the basement room where he’s imprisoned.
“It just felt like the time to pull back the cameras and observe this human being in his own misery,” says executive producer Chris Long.
Backlit by light pouring in through glass bricks, Carell stands solemnly holding a piece of paper his captor printed out for him with the words of the kaddish. It’s an emotionally fraught moment, but Long and creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields thought it best to leave the character in his loneliness.

“It provided this window into the inner life of the characters,” shares “Transatlantic” co-creator, writer, and executive producer Anna Winger on what appealed to her about Julie Orringer’s novel “The Flight Portfolio,” which served as the basis for her Netflix limited series. She is a novelist herself, so she appreciated how the book “really got into the minds of the characters” to tell the “crazy story that brings together Americans with Germans and French” in the “melting pot of Marseille.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Transatlantic” is set in 1940 Marseille, France, and follows the efforts of real life figures including Varian Fry and Mary Jayne Gold and the Emergency Rescue Committee as they attempt to evacuate a list of individuals from Europe as the Nazis begin to seize control. Since many of the events depicted in the series took place, Winger wanted most of all to accurately capture...

In the first half hour of Netflix series Transatlantic, we get a sense of the range of Lucas Englander.
When we meet the Austrian actor, who plays Albert Hirschman in Netflix’s new international series, he’s a bedraggled refugee, stumbling down the hill toward the beach at Marseilles, the “last free port” in Nazi-occupied France, circa 1940. Spotting the waters of the Mediterranean, he stops. Then breaks into a run. Hitting the beach, he strips off his grimy clothes and plunges into the water, letting out a whoop of pure joy, like a child on the first day of summer. A few scenes later, Englander plays Hirschman as the suave lothario. In a bluff to get past a checkpoint, he pretends to be the lover of American heiress Mary Jayne Gold (Gillian Jacobs), whom he met moments earlier, wrapping his arm around her and giving her a brazen smooch. Later,...

TV shows and movies inspired by real-life events tend to overstate the truth for dramatic effect. Netflix’s Transatlantic is a rare case of underplaying history — in this case, the work of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold, and the rest of the European Rescue Committee, who worked to get Jewish refugees safely out of Europe in the early days of World War II.
In reality, Fry, a journalist, and Gold, an heiress, helped the Erc smuggle more than 2,000 refugees — many of them great artists and intellectuals like Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt — out of France.

Transatlantic is a series created by Anna Winger starring Gillian Jacobs, Cory Michael Smith and Yoli Fuller. It is based on the novel by Julie Orringer.
Without dramatisms, with a wide range of complex secondary plots, aesthetically cared for, with meticulous production and, yes, a light comedy tone from the 30’s that might put some viewers off.
That hasn’t been the case with us, because we find it to be a delightful series.
About the Series
It is easy to watch and to savor in every shot. A series that aesthetically looks like a movie, that shows the loving care put into the production and, finally, the desire to make “a great series”. Of course, this “great series” does not receive this treatment with respect to the script and does not want to become the neo-noir epic that some will surely ask for. It has a touch more Wes Anderson...

This article contains spoilers for Transatlantic.
Netflix’s new period drama Transatlantic tells the story of Journalist Varian Fry (Cory Michael Smith), and American expatriate and heiress Mary Jayne Gold (Gillian Jacobs) who founded the Emergency Rescue Committee (Erc) that helped over 2,000 people flee the Nazis during World War II, without government support.
The series, created by Anna Winger and Daniel Hendler, is a fictional representation of true events in which people did whatever was necessary to save those in danger. So how much of Transatlantic is the real story and what did the creators leave out?
The Inspiration Behind Netflix’s Transatlantic
In both the series and real life, Gold and Fry helped prominent European figures such as political philosopher Hannah Arendt, painter Max Ernst and German novelist Heinrich Mann escape to the United States, away from the Nazis persecuting Jews across Europe.

Netflix’s new limited series Transatlantic is the inversion of the streamer’s recent Elvis-as-animated-spy comedy Agent Elvis.
With Agent Elvis, it was: Come for the silly premise, genre hijinks and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) masturbating chimpanzee, stay for the surprisingly well-researched exploration of 1960s and ’70s esoterica.
With Transatlantic, I came for what is a spectacular, perhaps under-known corner of history, with tendrils into 1930s and ’40s European cultural esoterica, and I was left with genre hijinks, surrealist wackiness and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) dog.
Take that as you will.
If Transatlantic arrived on Netflix with a guarantee that every viewer who tuned in would promptly go and learn more about the story of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold and the Villa Air-Bel, I would give it a strong recommendation.
The series, which hails from Unorthodox co-creator Anna Winger and Daniel Handler, is a frothy adventure yarn...

Anna Winger, an American writer, producer and showrunner who has spent more than 20 years, and her entire TV career, in Berlin, specializes in stories that combine a very specific European, usually German, history filtered through very American sensibilities.
Deutschland ’83, and its sequels Deutschland ’86 and Deutschland ’89, which aired on Amazon Prime stateside, told the story of the decline of East Germany and the fall of the Berlin Wall from the perspective of an East German spy, but told in the style of a slick Hollywood thriller.
Similarly, her Emmy-winning Netflix limited series Unorthodox, the story of a woman who flees her life in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn to find liberation in modern-day Berlin — based on Deborah Feldman’s best-selling memoir — borrows heavily from genre conventions to package a spiritual character study in the guise of more mainstream entertainment.

With Series Mania 2023 coming to a close, the event’s founder and general director Laurence Herszberg announced the winners of the Series Mania Festival today.
”We would first like to thank the public and the professionals who attended this edition, which brought together more than 85,000 participants for the Festival and 3,800 participants from 64 countries for the Forum. We are delighted to announce our prize list and figures that have far exceeded our expectations,” said Herszberg.
With the rise of streaming across the world, Series Mania has become one of the most attractive events in the global TV calendar. It’s largely looked at as a place where writers, distributors and producers can liase with each other in a less formal setting than compared to a TV sales market. It includes not just the festival, the Forum, key conferences, keynotes, and pitching sessions.
This year the festival screened 54 unreleased series, with 32 world premieres and 10 international premieres.

National protests in France threatened to disrupt the 2023 Series Mania television festival and international industry summit, but, in the end, the 2023 event went off without a hitch. Members of the global TV industry gathered in the northern French city of Lille to celebrate the best in new small-screen drama and ponder the future of the business.
Here are the four big industry takeaways.

Exclusive: Anna Winger drew inspiration from comedy and entertainment in Casablanca when penning upcoming Netflix war drama Transatlantic.
The show, which is the first to emerge from the Deutschland 83 creator’s Netflix deal, tells the story of the Emergency Rescue Committee, an organization that helped thousands of refugees escape Nazi-occupied Marseille during World War Two.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline just before its Series Mania premiere, Winger said she wanted to set Transatlantic apart from previous similar offerings such as Schindler’s List through its humor and creativity, and that she sought inspiration from 1942 hit Casablanca.
“I’ve been approached with lots of World War Two material during my career and have avoided it because I felt like it had been done, but what I loved about this story is the positivity,” she added.

Based in the northern French town of Lille since 2018, Series Mania has emerged as a key showcase for premium series and a spotlight for international creators — though, given the wider forces shaping the TV business, that spotlight has often shone on talent from the same three or four territories. And so, when programming the latest edition, the Series Mania brass looked to widen the field.
“This year, we will introduce our attendees to new narrative modes and visual possibilities,” says general director Laurence Herszberg. “Because we’ve discovered so many series from countries that haven’t often attended the major festivals, with creative outputs that are much lesser-known. We want to celebrate them as well.”
Running March 17–24, this edition boasts 55 series culled from 396 submissions encompassing more than 60 countries, with titles from Uruguay (“The Universe Conspires”), Benin (“Black Santiago Club”) and an Indo-Pakistani production (“Limboland”) all appearing at Series Mania for the very first time.

VFX powerhouse MacGuff is using its proprietary tools Face Engine and the new Face Creative Engine, in conjunction with traditional CGI, on a slew of French and international projects for streamers and French broadcasters.
France is one of the world’s biggest VFX hubs, leveraged by its Trip scheme, that enables foreign shoots to tap into a 40 cash rebate on all eligible expenses – including expenses for live action that are not VFX related – for international projects whose VFX expenses surpass €2 million (2.16 million) spent in France.
Philippe Sonrier, MacGuff’s co-founder and joint director, says that the studio is seeing rising demand from streamers. The studio has 70 staff, but plans to grow to around 120 in 2023, due to rising demand.
For Netflix, MacGuff is providing VFX work on three series, including Season 3 of “Lupin,” having worked on Seasons 1 and 2. “Wonderman” is about the life of French empresario Bernard Tapie, in which the studio uses de-ageing tools.

“Everyone struggles to find a version of themselves that they like,” so says Jane, as played by Gillian Jacobs, in the new, spellbinding exquisite-corpse film “The Seven Faces of Jane.” She’s talking to a young teenage girl who’s run away on her quinceañera, but she’s talking to herself too.
Jane has something of an identity crisis, or rather, one that’s been created for her. A single mother with time to spare while her daughter is away at camp, Jane sets off on an adventure, or several of them, actually. What follows are seven different stories by different directors, none of whom know what the others are doing.
This form is known as an “exquisite corpse,” as is defined at the start of the film, which functions almost like a game of Telephone. The directors in question, curated by Roman Coppola, are Jacobs herself, Gia Coppola, Boma Iluma,...

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking with top German talent agency Players. Headed up by Mechthild Holter and Fabian Haslob, the duo have clients that have worked across recent projects such as Babylon Berlin, Unorthodox and Deutchland ’89. In a rare interview, they tell us why now is a great time for German-speaking talent to cross borders.
With film and television sectors more globalized than ever, international talent has fast become a premium for streamers as they lean in on local language productions in foreign markets to offset stagnant domestic growth. One company at the sharp end of this change is Germany’s Players Agency. The company, which was founded by Mechthild Holter in 1994, represents around 180 actors, writers, directors and cinematographers and is...

Top prizes at the USC Scripter event Saturday went to screenwriter Chloé Zhao and author Jessica Bruder for “Nomadland” as well as scripter Scott Frank and novelist Walter Tevis for Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.”
As in past years, the award goes to both the scriptwriter(s) as well as the writer(s) of the original material.
Searchlight Pictures’ “Nomadland” is based on the nonfiction book “Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century.” Zhao thanked Bruder, the cast and crew of the film and Searchlight, concluding, “I feel so lucky to be able to tell stories for a living.” Bruder added that she had been reporting in 2014 for a magazine article that turned into the book and “It has been one hell of a ride.”
The “Queen’s Gambit” duo won for the episode “Openings.” Frank thanked Tevis for “the gift of that novel … This novel was beautiful and my mission was to protect it.

Executive Producers: William Horberg, Allan Scott, Scott Frank
Synopsis: Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is an orphan who becomes a chess prodigy, but alcoholism may prevent her from becoming the world champion.

This year’s limited series category is an ambitious field, made up of personal tales like “Small Axe” and “Unorthodox,” an addictive mystery in “The Undoing” and a boundary-pushing, honest relationship tale with “Normal People.” But the compelling performance by Anya Taylor-Joy in “The Queen’s Gambit,” which manages to make chess exciting and one young woman’s personal journey combating her demons even more compelling, is the true frontrunner here.
And The Predicted Winner Is: "The Queen's Gambit" (Netflix)–
Executive Producers: William Horberg, Allan Scott, Scott Frank
Synopsis: Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is an orphan who becomes a chess prodigy, but alcoholism may prevent her from becoming the world champion.

On Wednesday, as Golden Globe Nominations were announced, Unorthodox‘s Shira Haas was at home in Tel Aviv, glued to the Netflix series’ cast and crew group text. When both the show and Haas herself received noms, there were “a lot of capital letters” in that Whatsapp chat, she told Deadline.
“I’m super excited and happy,” she said. “It’s more than I expected. It’s the greatest. “We were texting like crazy, and phonecalls one after the other with the crew. There’s a lot of love even though it’s been a while since we filmed it.”
The Anna Winger-created limited series Unorthodox stars Haas as Esther Shapiro, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish woman living in Brooklyn, who escapes the confines of her marriage and community for a new life in Berlin. “When I first got the script, I thought, How can I relate to this character because...

The USC Libraries has revealed the finalists for the 33rd annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
Last year’s Scripter winners were Oscar and Emmy nominees Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”). The year before was atypical, as the Scripter Award went to “Leave No Trace” screenwriters Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini (and author Peter Rock), who were not nominated for the Oscar.
Past winners of both the Scripter and the Oscar include “Call Me by Your Name,” “Moonlight,” “The Big Short,” and “The Imitation Game.” In fact, before 2019, eight Scripter Award winners went on to win Oscars. This year, streaming giant Netflix dominated, with three nominees, including “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,...

“Nomadland,” “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “First Cow” and “Bad Education” have been nominated for the 2021 USC Libraries Scripter Awards, which are given out every year to a literary adaptation and the source material from which it is taken.
The nomination for “Ma Rainey,” for example, goes to both screenwriter Ruben Santiago-Hudson and to the late playwright August Wilson, from whose work the film was drawn.
In the television category, the nominees were episodes of “The Good Lord Bird,” “Normal People,” “The Plot Against America,” “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Unorthodox.”
The finalists were chosen by a jury from 87 film and 65 episodic series adaptations. “The Father,” “News of the World” and “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” are among the films in the running for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar that were not chosen by the Scripter jury.

Best TV Movie/Limited Series
Updated: Jan. 11, 2021
Awards Commentary:
Last year, the HFPA somehow completely missed out on honoring HBO’s “Watchmen,” the critically acclaimed limited series that went on to dominate the Emmys. This year, the limited series race is stacked with contenders — too many worthy programs to all make the cut. But don’t keep your eye on any TV movies — in comparison to limited series, there aren’t...

Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) faces doubt and disdain from her male counterparts at every step of her journey to become a chess world champion, yet each time, without fail, she proves them wrong.
The protagonist of Netflix’s breakthrough hit “The Queen’s Gambit” is one of several central characters in this year’s crop of Golden Globes limited series contenders, including “Unorthodox,” “Normal People” and “Mrs. America,” who face an uphill fight against a patriarchal society or traditional forces to get what they want. Each one makes a fair share of mistakes, but ultimately achieves some degree of success in being heard and in changing their lives for the better.
Despite some help from her elderly chess teacher, her adoptive mother and a couple of chess friends here and there, Beth’s relentless drive to be the best propels her to the top. Her obsession and her passion are what...

The final season of the Deutschland spy series begins with an ending. In the opening episode of Deutschland 89, the Berlin Wall falls, giving East German citizens free movement to West Germany and beyond for the first time in decades. What follows in the eight-episode final season is a social study in how different people react when their reality is suddenly and fundamentally altered. In the year 2020, as the world continues to reel from the seismic changes Covid-19 has wrought, it’s an unexpectedly relatable experience.
“Deutschland 89 is really about how people have to reinvent themselves during a crisis,” says Deutschland series co-creator Joerg Winger. “So I think, in that way, it does reflect today, but that was not intentional.”
From the beginning, the Deutschland series—which launched in 2015 with Deutschland 83, continued in 2018 with Deutschland 86, and just concluded with Deutschland 89—has used history as a metaphor for contemporary politics.
