Marian Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, has died at the age of 86.
Robinson’s death was confirmed by the former First Lady on social media Friday. “My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed,” wrote Michelle. “She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today.”

The Human Rights Campaign honored Jean Smart and Sterling K. Brown at its 2024 Los Angeles Dinner, held on Saturday night at the Fairmont Century Plaza and featuring a keynote speech by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.
The night — which toasted those working for LGBTQ+ equality — kicked off with Biden’s speech following a short introduction from both First Daughter Ashley Biden and Hrc president Kelly Robinson. Early into the her address, the first lady was interrupted by protesters shouting, “Ceasefire now.” One person who was escorted out by security held up a sign that read, “Queer Jews Say Ceasefire Now.” Biden momentarily paused her speech, but didn’t directly address the protesters.
Biden spoke about her relationship with the president before jumping into issues the LGBTQ+ are currently facing. “This community is under attack,” Biden told the crowd. “Rights are being stripped away. Freedoms are eroding. More and more state laws are being passed,...

This fabulous new release of the Hammer Horror classic comes with a generous slate of features which includes not one but two separate audio commentaries. The one by Marcus Hearn and Jonathan Rigby is fairly conventional - which is not to say uninteresting - taking viewers through the film step by step as it unfolds and discussing aspects of production and stories from the set. The other, by academic Kelly Robinson, is truly fascinating, focusing as it does on wider aspects of the mummy as a character in European and North American fiction, and probing the ways in which it differs from Hammer's previously established monsters Count Dracula and Baron Frankenstein's creation, by virtue of its lack of a foundational narrative. Drawing together the cinematic and the literary, this is a real treat, the sort of in-depth material which is hard to access outside educational settings, and it adds considerable.

Kino reaches into the Universal Vault for vintage Paramount and Universal thrillers. This ‘noir’ collection surprises us — it contains one terrific example of the style, newly-hatched and looking very different for its year. The other two titles are in B&w (check), and revolve around murders (check). But if there were a TV quiz show called ‘Noir or Not Noir’ they’d shape up as third-tier also-rans. The talent on view is impressive, especially the leading ladies: Claire Trevor, Louise Platt, Merle Oberon, Ella Raines, and Gale Sondergaard. Kino appoints the film with good commentators: Jason A. Ney, Anthony Slide, Kelly Robinson.

Craig and Kelly Robinson, the brother and sister-in-law of Michelle Obama, are suing a K-12 Milwaukee private school for alleged racism against non-white students. They claimed the school’s lessons included racial stereotypes, that administrators downplayed instances of racism both of their sons experienced from classmates, and the school expelled the boys in retaliation when the Robinsons raised […]

“Another ‘Forbidden Fruit’ Exploitation Relic”
By Raymond Benson
Here’s another one, folks! Another entry in the “Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture” series, this time it’s Volume 8. Presented by Kino Lorber in association with Something Weird Video, we have for your pleasure the controversial “hoax” documentary, Ingagi (1930), a shocking example of racism and circus sideshow-style cinematic exhibition.
There have always existed what have been termed in the motion picture industry “exploitation films,” even back in the silent days. The 1930s and much of the 1940s, however, saw a deluge of cheap, not-even-“B” pictures made, usually independently of Hollywood and marketed in guerilla fashion as “educational” adult fare. You know the type. Reefer Madness. Child Bride. Mom and Dad (all previous titles released in the Forbidden Fruit series).
