Set in the foreboding sugar cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal, Fremantle-M-Net crime thriller “Reyka” – starring South African born Kim Engelbrecht, whose credits include “Isidingo,” “Dominion” and “The Flash,” and Iain Glen, Ser Jorah Mormont in “Games of Thrones” – looks set to mark another milestone in both Fremantle and premium South Africa TV production.
For Fremantle, a still expanding scripted drama force, “Reyka” is its first South African show, after it launched last year its first shows from Israel’s Maria Feldman and Chile’s Fabula.
For M-Net, following on “Trackers,” co-produced with HBO and Zdf, “Reyka” marks an early push into large-scale premium international co-production pairing local and international talent as M-Net parent Multichoice, led by Yolisa Phahle, sees some significant success in facing off with Netflix.

It is time for me to make my peace with the fact that I will not be at Fantastic Fest this year. Last year's fest was one of my favorites ever, fitting for a tenth anniversary, and I would love to go this year. It's just not in the cards, though. It guts me, too. The event continues to grow and change and evolve, and it features one of the greatest programming teams in the business right now. There are films playing at the festival that I'll see in Toronto, and I'm sure I'll catch up with others, but that's not the point. Fantastic Fest is an experience, and an amazing one. If you want to go, you still can. "Daytime Only Badges, Fan Badges, and 2Nd Half Badges for Fantastic Fest 2015 are available for purchase here," today's press release urged. If you can go for the second half, you'll...

One of the greatest genre film festivals in the world (some say the best) has just announced its second wave of titles, including a few titles so anticipated you’ll wish you’re in Austin next month. Below are 35 more films to add to the 23 already announced in the first wave. They include Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise and Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up to Blue Ruin, The Green Room. In addition to the films, Fantastic Fest is also delivering something special this year with a performance from Itchy-o – “a blazing, 32-member aural assault from the darkest depths of Colorado.” Fantastic Fest will also host the World Premiere of Lazer Team, the first feature film from web series gods Rooster Teeth. “This is a big year for genre cinema. We’re exceptionally proud to honor incredible filmmakers...

It’s hard to believe that we are a month away from what is possibly the best genre film festival in North America! After announcing a Kurt Russell included first wave, we get a wave that probably includes all the films I have the most interest in. The French remake of what I consider is one of Mario Bava’s best films, Rabid Dogs is included. Along with Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up from Blue Ruin, Green Room where Patrick Stewart plays a Neo-Nazi club owner, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of High-Rise and the horror film that has some chilling buzz, The Witch, are all included. Check out the full listing below and wait with anticipation for our coverage of the festival!

Money is the root of all evil. It may give one a temporary high, but the pursuit of material wealth will eventually be the driving force toward your wreck and ruin, so you need to find that other connection in life if you have any hope of making it in this world. In Hard to Get, a very robust and stylistic South African noir from debut feature director Zee Ntuli, this is exactly what the two protagonists need to figure out if they hope to survive and create a better life.
Tk (Pallance Dladla) is the local lothario of his village, making bets with his friends to see how many minutes it will take for him to talk a girl into sleeping with him in the backroom of the bar in which he works. Enter the gorgeous Skiets (Thishiwe Ziqubu), a woman of mystery who immediately catches Tk’s eye.

Over the past few years there has been an unmistakable sense that South Africa is a film nation on the rise and if that is, indeed, the case then its continued ascent will rest on the shoulders of bright young talents such as writer-director Zee Ntuli. At the tender of age of just 25 Ntuli's debut feature - the action-drama Hard To Get - got the nod as the opening night selection at the Durban International Film Festival and while it certainly shows some room for future growth it also shows a potent talent with an obvious gift for drawing performances from his actors and an uncommon ability to shift tones on a dime. In a post screening Q&A session Ntuli stated that a guiding...

The opening slot at the 2014 Durban International Film Festival belongs to Hard To Get, the debut feature from Zee Ntuli.
