As the therapist in filmmaker Charlotte Hamblin’s quirky, offbeat dark comedy Everybody Dies…Sometimes tells us, that the only inevitability in life is death. A stark and not so comforting fact for the film’s protagonist Mara, who is struggling with the long-held belief, well supported by her tragic history, that she’ll cause the demise of anyone she gets close to. Everybody Dies…Sometimes is an oddly joyous and buoyant take on that existential doom we all face, which flashes through a series of truly funny fatal scenarios experienced by those prematurely taken from Mara’s life. Writer/Director Hamblin draws from her own lamentable over-familiarity with death in this semi-autobiographical directorial debut in which the established screenwriter’s script, coupled with Tanya Reynolds’ (Sex Education) and Mathew Horne’s (Gavin & Stacey) perfectly deadpan delivery and the film’s colourful visuals, turn the spectre of death into something to poke fun at.

The 31st edition of London’s Raindance Film Festival will open with the U.K. premiere of British actor Jack Huston’s directorial debut “Day of the Fight.”
The film comes to Raindance fresh off its Venice debut, where Huston was honored by Variety as a breakthrough director.
The story of a once-renowned boxer who takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he left prison stars Michael Pitt alongside a cast including Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci, and a cameo from Steve Buscemi.
The U.K. premiere of Isabel Coixet’s “Un Amor” will close the festival after it bows at San Sebastian. Based on Sara Mesa’s bestselling novel, Laia Costa plays a young woman who escapes her stressful life in the city and relocates to rural Spain. When she accepts a disturbing sexual proposal, it gives rise to an all-consuming and obsessive passion.

Apple Original Films has unveiled the trailer (see above) and key art (see below) for the highly anticipated documentary, The Pigeon Tunnel, a riveting portrait of the master of espionage fiction, John le Carré from Academy Award-winning Errol Morris.
In The Pigeon Tunnel, Morris pulls back the curtain on the storied life and career of former British spy David Cornwell — better known as John le Carré, author of such classic espionage novels as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and The Constant Gardener. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Cold War leading into present day, the film spans six decades as le Carré delivers his final and most candid interview, punctuated with rare archival footage and dramatized vignettes. The Pigeon Tunnel is a deeply human and engaging exploration of le Carré’s extraordinary journey and the paper-thin membrane between fact and fiction.

Stars: Charlotte Hamblin, Robert Nairne | Written by Stefan Kaday | Directed by Chloe Wicks
Written by Stefan Kaday and directed by Chloe Wicks, Cubicle is an under-four-minute long short horror film, much shorter than many of the short films I’m used to, yet it manages to be incredibly effective and wonderfully stylish in that minimal amount of time. Woah.
We find a woman sitting in a toilet stall, about to take a pregnancy test, when a couple stagger into the stall beside her. She soon hears moaning sounds, like the couple are engaging in some nookie. Maybe, though… just maybe, there isn’t any *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* going on in that stall at all, maybe there’s something more sinister afoot.
There’s very little going on here to write about, really, in the sense that the time we spend with actress Charlotte Hamblin is so slight, yet she...

Emma Thompson will play a climate-change activist in “Extinction,” a timely satirical short film that will include footage of the Extinction Rebellion group’s ongoing wave of action in London.
Two-time Oscar winner Thompson has herself been involved in the high-profile London-based protests. She addressed crowds over the weekend from Extinction Rebellion’s signature pink boat, which was placed in Oxford Circus, one of the British capital’s busiest intersections, and which will feature in the film. That was part of a series of protests by the group. Its activities are carrying on this week as it lobbies for action against climate change and ecological collapse.
Thompson will play a veteran environmentalist and a highly qualified member of Extinction Rebellion who secures a meeting with a senior government official. She and the Conservative Party lawmaker lock horns as protests and disruption take place outside.
