Exclusive: Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 thriller Basic Instinct is the inspiration for a new comic book series by Sumerian Comics.
Sumerian is teaming with Cuban illustrator Vanesa R. Del Rey to create the first comic book series based on the movie, which starred Sharon Stone as enigmatic writer Catherine Tramell who becomes the prime suspect in a murder. Below are the first cover designs.
The series will follow an anonymous artist who draws inspiration from famous murders — their newest exhibit is inspired by Tramell’s “Icepick Murders.” When a security guard at the exhibition space is murdered on opening night, the art director responsible for the opening is thrust into an investigation that forces him to question his own involvement.
On the noir adaptation — described as a “continuation of the Catherine Tramell story” — Del Rey teams with writer Sam Freeman and colorist Keyla Valerio. Also working on the covers were Brao,...

David Prior's 2020 film "The Empty Man" opens with a prologue that could easily stand alone as one of the most chilling short films ever made. It's 1995, and two couples -- Paul (Aaron Poole) and Ruthie (Virginia Kull), Fiona (Jessica Matten) and Greg (Evan Jonigkeit) -- are hiking through the Ura Valley in Bhutan. After crossing an old, swaying suspension bridge across a yawning chasm, Paul hears a soft sound like someone blowing into an empty bottle. Curious, he wanders off across the mountaintop in search of the source of this sound. As the others watch, he slips through an unseen hole in the rocks and disappears, as though he was never there at all.
It's another twenty minutes before the title card of the movie appears, stylized as "The Em ty Man." By this point, all of the hikers are dead except for Paul, who is trapped in a different kind of hell.

The Empty Man, a supernatural horror film, has become a surprise straggler in a shrunken pandemic-era lineup of films still actually headed to theaters… and it’s coming sooner rather than later, as evidenced by 20th Century Studios’ release of the trailer.
James Badge Dale headlines the horror flick, which adapts The Empty Man comic book series from Boom! Studios created by esteemed writer Cullen Bunn with art by Vanesa R. Del Rey. The film also serves as the feature directorial debut of David Prior, who worked off an adaptation screenplay he wrote, bringing nearly two decades’ worth of experience filming shorts and documentaries, notably shorts connected to director David Fincher’s 2011 version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Familiar summoned supernatural urban legend creature concepts from genre offerings such as the remake-set Candyman and The Slender Man will obviously come to mind once the trailer for The Empty Man establishes its premise.
