Chance the Rapper is reflecting on a difficult time from his past. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of his Acid Rap project, the rap star opened up to Complex about his struggles with substance abuse during his early career days.
During the interview, Chance was asked how his life would’ve looked like if he hadn’t grown beyond Acid Rap: “I probably would’ve died, to be honest,” he responded, saying that people view the record as only entertainment but “it takes away the humanity from the people who make it.

After reuniting at Pharrell’s Something in the Water festival last year, Clipse are set to make an even bigger splash with a headlining set at Chicago’s Hyde Park Summerfest. The festival goes down on June 17th and 18th at Midway Plaisance Park and will feature 2 Chainz as the other headliner.
According to a press statement, Clipse will “perform some of their biggest hits, including ‘Grindin’ and ‘When the Last Time,’ alongside other collaborations and fan favorites.”
Unless something changes, this will mark the duo of Pusha T and real-life brother No Malice’s first full set since announcing their reunion for the postponed 2020 edition of Something in the Water. Last fall, Clipse also played brief sets at the BET Awards and ComplexCon.

Vic Mensa peels off some tasty licks while falling through the sky in the wild new video for “Strawberry Louis Vuitton.”
The tender, soulful tune features contributions from Thundercat as well as R&b artist Maeta. In the video, co-directed by Mensa and Danielle DeGrasse-Alston, Mensa goes skydiving with his guitar, strumming and singing the whole way down before finally landing cooly in a field where he’s got a female companion waiting for him.
In a statement, Mensa explained that “Strawberry Louis Vuitton” was largely inspired by the late designer Virgil Abloh.

The vivid West African country of Ghana, which was historically used as a prominent port in the British trade of enslaved peoples, is increasingly on the map as a tourist and cultural destination, especially for Black Americans and entertainment industry stars including Kendrick Lamar, Gabrielle Union, Sza, Meek Mill and Chance the Rapper.

When Chance the Rapper visited West Africa earlier this year, he initially thought his trip with fellow Chicago hip-hop artist Vic Mensa would be just another vacation getaway.
Instead, the Grammy winner connected with Mensa’s father’s family in Ghana and other natives from the Motherland on a deeper level. He saw Ghana’s beautiful ocean coastline and waterfalls, engulfed himself in the musical culture and art scene and learned more about the country’s rich history of being the first sub-Saharan African country to free itself from colonialism.

After a couple more trips to Ghana, Chance decided to create a free concert series and visual arts show so others could experience the country’s vibrant culture just like he did. During the summer, Chance and Mensa brought eight students from Chicago to Ghana to learn more about Africa.

Chance the Rapper is redefining what home means to him. On his latest single “Yah Know,” which features Ghanian singer King Promise, the musician channels Eighties house music through a sample of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” while pondering ideas of liberation, freedom, and protecting his own peace.
“Let me take y’all back like Marcus/When Europe was still in the darkness,” he offers in an impromptu history lesson. “The boats was big as the arc is/The cargo was gold-tipped spears and it sold by the load.

Back in 2007, Sarkodie had a dream — and a problem. He wanted to be a great rapper, but his native tongue, Twi, was not a language many understood, especially outside his hometown of Tema, Ghana. He wasn’t about to be deterred. “I believed that I was able to take Twi somewhere,” he says. “That I was able to push it and go beyond the shores of Ghana.”
Sarkodie came up through the underground, and his battle skills and rap-fire delivery set him on an unstoppable upward trajectory as he rhymed mostly in Twi.

Chance the Rapper shares a short tale in “A Bar About a Bar.” The accompanying new self-directed video features fellow Chicago rapper Vic Mensa and Chicago-based painter Nikko Washington.
The clip opens on Chance and Mensa working on a writing exercise. Mensa asks, “What you got?” Chance launches into the opening verse with, “I got a bar about a bar/It’s not a joke, it’s just a bar” as he unfurls the tale that takes him, naturally, to a bar. Meanwhile, Washington paints in the background, inspired by the story.

On this week’s episode of the Scene 2 Seen Podcast, Darius Scott aka Dixson chats with us about songwriting, his favorite soundtracks, and working with Beyoncé. Dixson, a musician, singer and songwriter, co-wrote the Beyoncé song “Be Alive” which is featured on the soundtrack of Reinaldo Marcus Green’s film King Richard and has been nominated for an Oscar.
The movie stars Will Smith as Richard Williams and the lineage he cultivated as the father to tennis sensations Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena Williams (Demi Singleton) in the Warner Bros biopic. The real Williams sisters are executive producers along with their sister Isha Price.
In the movie, Richard approaching coaches and managers with videotapes of his daughters. Paul Cohen (Tony Goldywyn) and Rick Macci (Jon Bernthal) were two who took a chance on Venus. By 1994, she was competing with pros. That’s when Richard decided she’d take a break...

Beyonce is a contender for the best original song Oscar this year with “Be Alive,” her end-credits number that provides a musical epilogue at the close of “King Richard.” Alongside her, producer/songwriter Dixson helped craft the soaring ballad, which is on the Oscars’ shortlist of 15 eligible songs.
Dixson says he had only seen clips of the film at the time of writing the lyrics. “I had to believe blindly that what she would say and what I would say would work,” says the songwriter.
He credits his personal experience in helping him write the lyrics, as well as his familiarity with the story of the Williams sisters and their father, Richard. The film stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, father and coach of future tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. “My father was very similar to Richard Williams — he had a strategy for his kids,” Dixson says. “I didn...

Kid Cudi has always been transparent in his music - it's the reason he's considered one of the most influential artists of our generation. The prolific rapper's intimate documentary, A Man Named Scott, digs deep into the grisly struggles he's experienced in his career. The film reveals how Cudi used music as his therapy to work through his inner turmoil and, in doing so, how he inspired a new generation of rap artists to have a real dialogue around one of the most important issues today: mental health.
Hip-hop has always had a complicated relationship with mental health. The genre became an outlet for artists to rap about their everyday struggles in its early years (like Dmx's "Slippin'" and Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks on Me"). Still, mental health advocacy in rap didn't gain much-needed momentum until the 2010s. Kid Cudi, who started out as Kanye West's protégé in 2008, was...
