Dame Helen Mirren said that she is “blown away” after seeing her likeness captured in a new Barbie doll, which Mattel is releasing this week ahead of International Women’s Day. The latest batch of role model toys also includes dolls for Kylie Minogue, Viola Davis and Shania Twain.
The release, also marking Barbie’s 65th anniversary, is part of the Barbie Dream Gap Project, which was launched in 2018 to challenge gender stereotypes and help “undo the biases that hold girls back from reaching their full potential,” according to Mattel. In addition to including these four famous women, this week’s new set of dolls includes creator Maira Gomez, of Brazil’s indigenous Tatuyo community; Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilés; German comic Enissa Amani; and Japanese model Nicole Fujita.
“I am absolutely blown away by my Barbie,” Mirren said in a statement posted to her website. “To be chosen by Barbie...

The son of YouTube’s former chief executive Susan Wojcicki died last week at a residential housing unit at the University of California at Berkeley, officials confirmed this week.
Firefighters and medical workers were dispatched to the Clark Kerr Campus at U.C. Berkeley on Tuesday, February 13 after receiving reports of an unresponsive male.
When they arrived on the scene, they located Marco Troper, 19, who was pronounced dead by emergency personnel.
There were no signs of foul play, according to a law enforcement source who spoke with The Desk. Police are treating the case as a suspected drug overdose, the source said, though a full toxicology report will not be available for several weeks.
Troper’s death was first confirmed last week by his grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, who said the young man would often come home with “endless stories of his life and friends at Berkeley.

YouTube advertising revenue increased 12% to $7.95 billion in the third quarter compared with the same period a year ago, helping corporate parent Alphabet beat Wall Street expectations.
Total revenue rose 11% over the year-earlier quarter to hit $76.7 billion, while earnings per share surged to $1.55 from $1.06. Wall Street analysts had estimated revenue of $71.6 billion and Eps of $1.36.
Despite the results coming in well above forecasts, Alphabet shares slipped more than 5%. They came into earnings up 59% this year to date.
The main flaw in the earnings report that was seized upon by investors was the performance of Alphabet’s cloud business. It undershot Wall Street estimates, reaching $8.41 billion in revenue compared with forecasts for $8.6 billion.
CEO Sundar Pichai touted “product momentum” in the earnings release, specifically artificial intelligence enhancements to Search, YouTube, Cloud, Pixel devices and other areas. “We’re continuing to focus on making AI more helpful for everyone; there’s exciting progress and lots more to come,...

Mary Ellen Coe was installed as YouTube’s Chief Business Officer last fall, just as the activity level at the company was beginning to surge even by the breakneck standards of a startup-turned-digital-behemoth.
Since she landed in her new role after a 10-year run at Google and a prior chapter at McKinsey, many major headlines have blared. The company secured NFL Sunday Ticket in a $14 billion, seven-year rights deal that kicked off this month. YouTube TV, now a top-5 U.S. pay-tv operator, got an unexpected boost from Disney’s battle with Charter over carriage on Spectrum TV. YouTube Shorts passed 50 billion daily views less than two years after its global launch. And on the corporate front, a leadership shuffle saw Susan Wojcicki hand the CEO baton to Neal Mohan and Robert Kyncl depart after 12 years and become CEO of Warner Music Group.

San Francisco, Sep 3 (Ians) Tech giant Google, which turns 25 on Monday, has come a long way from being born as a search engine in the garage of Susan Wojcicki — the future boss of YouTube — in a new tech landscape of generative AI, chatbots and social media.
Google was founded on September 4, 1998, by American computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were PhD students at Stanford University in California.
The company — now part of the parent group called Alphabet and run by Indian-origin Sundar Pichai — has diversified into several tech streams and launched several products.
The company rapidly grew to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Cloud, Chrome, YouTube, Workspace, Android operating system, cloud storage Drive, Google Translate), video chat app Meet, Pixel smartphones, Google Assistant, Bard AI and more

The second quarter of 2023 was a smashing success for Alphabet. In its latest earnings report, the parent company of Google and YouTube reported quarterly revenue of $74.60 billion and a net income of $18.37 billion during Q2.
Those figures allowed Alphabet’s earnings report to exceed Wall Street expectations for the second-straight quarter. The tech giant posted a strong overall showing in Q1 despite disappointing results from YouTube.
YouTube’s Q2 2023 performance told a different story. Over three months, the leading video platform hauled in $7.7 billion of ad revenue, which represents a year-over-year increase of about 5%. YouTube’s ad revenue had previously declined for three straight quarters.
Several factors contributed to YouTube’s reversal. In CEO Neal Mohan‘s first full quarter since he took over for former YouTube boss Susan Wojcicki, he began to deliver the creator-friendly tools he had previously teased. Q2 2023 was the first full quarter for Primetime Channels and YouTube Shorts ads.

YouTube posted 4% advertising revenue growth in the second quarter as parent Alphabet rode momentum in search and cloud services to smash Wall Street analysts’ expectations.
The tech giant reported diluted earnings per share of $1.44 and total revenue of $74.6 billion, compared with consensus forecasts for $1.20 and $65.4 billion, respectively. YouTube’s ad take came to $7.665 billion. The video giant changed leadership earlier this year, with Susan Wojcicki stepping down after 9 years as CEO and passing the baton to veteran exec Neil Mohan.
The upbeat quarterly report reverses more discouraging results of late, including an unprecedented dip in ad results at YouTube, which was seen as an ominous portent for other players navigating a choppy ad market. Total ad revenue had slipped in the two previous quarters, a rare slump for a dominant force in the ad arena.
“There’s exciting momentum across our products and the company,” CEO Sundar Pichai said in the earnings release.

YouTube brought in $7.7 billion in advertising revenue in its second quarter, reversing the prior trends of a downturn.
This is an increase from the $6.69 billion in the previous quarter, which had been the third consecutive quarter marking a decrease in ad revenue, and above the $7.3 billion brought in during the second quarter of last year. Overall, in the three months ended June 30, Alphabet, the parent company of YouTube, reported revenue of $74.60 billion in revenue and net income of $18.37 billion, or $1.44 per share, beating Wall Street expectations.
This is the first full quarter under new YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, who succeeded longtime executive Susan Wojcicki in March. In his first letter to the community, Mohan said “supporting the success of creators” was among his top priorities, and he planned to improve monetization tools and grow creator communities. Focus areas included YouTube’s short-form video offering, Shorts, and streaming products such as YouTube TV and Primetime Channels.

Most people know that social media has become a cesspool of disinformation, a digital hydra that feeds off toxicity and conspiracy theories. But somehow YouTube, the second-most-popular site in the world, has avoided the scrutiny that’s come Twitter and Facebook’s way. “The YouTube Effect,” a new documentary from Alex Winter, could change that. It takes a tough look at the role that the Google-owned service played in everything from the Jan. 6 riot to the 2019 New Zealand mosque shooting by promoting election denialism and white supremacy.
“People don’t know that YouTube and Google are the biggest purveyors of disinformation,” Winter says. “One reason is people don’t understand what YouTube is. Is it just a place to watch cat videos, or is it something else? And the second reason you hear about it less is because Google is so deep-pocketed that it has some of the strongest...

YouTube made connected TV viewership one of the main themes of its 2023 Brandcast presentation. In its annual pitch to advertisers, Google’s video platform touted its growing audience on TV screens and discussed new ad products that will help brands reach those viewers.
The latest Brandcast spiel was the first since Neal Mohan took over for Susan Wojcicki as the CEO of YouTube. At the start of his address, he remarked on his own history in the ad world. Mohan came to YouTube after Google acquired DoubleClick, where he served as SVP of Strategy and Product Management.
In front of familiar faces and other agency execs, Mohan touted the impressive reach his company offers on connected TVs. Through that format, YouTube reportedly reaches 150 million monthly users. Mohan cited research from Nielsen, which found that YouTube accounts for 8.1% of all traffic on TV screens. No other streaming service claims a bigger piece of the pie.

YouTube drew a round of applause from advertisers at its annual Brandcast event by announcing it would let them run 30-second commercials that can’t be skipped by viewers on connected-TVs.
The feature will be available via YouTube Select, a curated platform for top-end advertisers introduced several years ago. The new 30-second initiative will affect 70% of impressions on connected-tv.
Sean Downey, President of Sales at Google, said the new option would allow for “richer storytelling in our most-viewed content.”

YouTube’s biggest ad innovation for 2023? It might be borrowing a well-worn page from old-fashioned linear TV.
At the YouTube Brandcast upfront event Wednesday in New York, execs announced the introduction of 30-second unskippable ads in top-performing YouTube content on TVs — you know, just like the commercials that have run on broadcast and cable networks for decades. YouTube also will start testing new “Pause Experiences” for YouTube on TV screens, showing an ad when viewers pause a video akin to the pause ads Hulu first bowed four years ago.
In their pitch to Madison Avenue types, YouTube execs also boasted of the streaming service’s massive reach: More than 150 million unique viewers in the U.S. watched YouTube and YouTube TV on televisions for the month of December 2022, according to Nielsen estimates. YouTube, already the most popular streamer on big-screen TVs, last month built on its lead as one of the only major services to see viewing time among U.S. TV households increase, according to new Nielsen data.
For the period from March 27-April 30, 2023, TV viewing of YouTube videos (excluding YouTube TV) was up 1.5%. That translated into an increase of 0.3 share points, with YouTube ending the month with 8.1% of total time spent watching television, according to Nielsen measurements.
Time spent viewing on most other streaming platforms, including Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Prime Video, Peacock and Hulu, was flat or down compared with March 2023, according to Nielsen’s The Gauge report for April. Along with YouTube, two free, ad-supported TV (Fast) services had month-over-month gains: Fox’s Tubi was up 6% from March, adding 0.1 share point to capture 1.1% of overall TV viewing, and Paramount’s Pluto TV viewing increased 3.9% for the month to hold at 0.8% share.

San Francisco, April 28 (Ians) Overture Life, a Spanish startup, which developed a sperm-injecting robot that can be controlled using a PlayStation controller, has successfully fertilised human eggs, giving birth to two healthy babies.
According to a report by MIT Technology Review, one of the engineers involved in developing the world’s first insemination robot had limited experience in the field of fertility medicine. However, they were able to utilise a Sony PlayStation 5 controller to help with the development process.

The first three months of 2023 proved to be a tumultuous time for Alphabet. The parent company of Google and YouTube started the quarter with a massive round of layoffs that affected many long-time employees. Then, in February, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki stepped down from her role after piloting the video platform for nearly a decade. Amidst all that turnover, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and TikTok’s search engine status presented great challenges for one of Google’s core businesses.
But after enduring all that turmoil, Alphabet is looking strong. The holding company’s Q1 2023 earnings exceeded expectations, though YouTube experienced a year-over-year decline for the third quarter in a row.
Alphabet reported strong topline numbers during a call with investors on April 25. The company’s Q1 earnings reached $1.17 per share, which beat projections by ten cents. Revenue topped out at $69.79 billion, nearly $1 billion above Alphabet’s expected quarterly mark.

YouTube brought in $6.69 billion in advertising revenue to start the year, continuing a downward trend for the video giant after past quarters of explosive growth during the earlier years of the pandemic.
The first-quarter revenue figure, reported as part of parent company Alphabet’s quarterly earnings on Tuesday, is roughly a 2.6 percent decline compared to the $6.87 billion in revenue reported during the first quarter of 2022. The video platform previously reported $7.96 billion in ad revenue during the holiday season, falling short of Wall Street expectations and representing an 8 percent year-over-year decline.
In a call with investors, Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat said the company was “encouraged by progress” in monetization for YouTube Shorts, which rolled out its revenue-sharing program with creators in February. The executive also said there was “significant ongoing subscriber growth” in YouTube Music Premium and YouTube TV, though the company has not disclosed subscriber numbers.

Olebe was brought in to replace YouTube’s former Global Head of Gaming Ryan Wyatt and former Head of Gaming Creators Lester Chen, both of whom left in 2022. He says that during his hiring process, he and Mohan had “lots of conversations” about gaming.

Olebe was brought in to replace YouTube’s former Global Head of Gaming Ryan Wyatt and former Head of Gaming Creators Lester Chen, both of whom left in 2022. He says that during his hiring process, he and Mohan had “lots of conversations” about gaming.

In his first open letter to the YouTube community this week, newly appointed CEO Neal Mohan dropped an eye-popping statistic about YouTube’s gaming efforts: Total views for gaming-related content crossed 2 trillion during the year. And as of December 2022, a YouTube rep told The Hollywood Reporter that gaming-related content brought in more than 500 million logged-in daily active viewers and more than 120 billion hours of watch time.
Suffice it to say that gaming content — which can span livestreams to traditional on-demand video — is massively popular on YouTube, which launched YouTube Gaming nearly eight years ago to compete with Amazon’s Twitch. Since then, the division has attracted top Twitch talent like Ludwig (Ludwig Ahgren), DrLupo (Benjamin Lupo), TimTheTatman (Tim Betar), Valkyrae (Rachell Hofstetter), Myth (Ali Kabbani), CouRage (Jack Dunlop) and LazarBeam (Lannan Eacott) for exclusive deals and brought gaming-friendly features like channel memberships and super chat to the main YouTube experience.

New Delhi, March 1 (Ians) Google-owned YouTube’s new boss Neal Mohan on Wednesday wrote his first letter to creators, supporting their success and helping them make more money, along with building for the YouTube of the future.
Mohan, who replaced YouTube’s long-time CEO Susan Wojcicki last month, said they are providing more opportunities for creators outside of ads by expanding “our subscriptions business, investing in shopping, and continually improving our paid digital goods offerings”.
“More than six million viewers paid for channel memberships on YouTube in December 2022 — an increase of over 20 per cent from the prior year,” Mohan said.
This year, Mohan said he will meet even more creators in person and hearing “how we can support them on YouTube”.
“Creator feedback is a key part of how we develop products, like a feature that lets creators reach new audiences by adding language tracks to their videos,” he noted.

YouTube’s new CEO Neal Mohan has outlined the online video sharing platform’s priorities for 2023.
“In its earliest start up days, I saw YouTube’s potential. Now, I’m incredibly excited to lead it into the future,” Mohan wrote in a letter on Wednesday. “As I look ahead to what’s next for YouTube, I’m confident we’ll put our full energy into what matters most for creators and viewers.”
One key priority for Mohan will be continuing to support YouTube creators by providing them with more ways to make money, helping them grow their communities and offering new features such as automatic and machine translated captions to broaden accessibility and the ability for viewers to remix clips of gaming content into its Shorts platform. A new creation tool will also launch later this year that will let creators record in a side-by-side layout with both Shorts and...

In a blog post, the longtime YouTuber touted progress in the company’s paid channels program. More than 6 million viewers paid for channel memberships on YouTube in December 2022, according to Mohan, up 20% from the prior year. “Hundreds of thousands of channels made money on YouTube for the first time last year,” he wrote.
Mohan also highlighted the NFL Sunday Ticket rights deal announced last December. The package will move to YouTube TV and also become a stand-alone offering available via YouTube after nearly three decades under the auspices of DirecTV. On February 16, longtime YouTube leader Susan Wojcicki sent reverberations across the tech industry by stepping down as the platform’s top exec. Two weeks later, her successor has revealed his goals for the coming year.
In his first open letter since becoming Head of YouTube, Neal Mohan outlined some of the initiatives his team is working on. If all goes according to plan, YouTube will shake off the economic doldrums of the post-lockdown era while continuing to roll out new developments to serve its creators and viewers.
Early on in his letter, Mohan acknowledged the “challenging macroeconomic climate” that currently affects YouTube and other big tech firms. YouTube’s parent company, Alphabet, cited the global slowdown when it announced a round of 12,000 layoffs in January.
Despite adverse conditions, Mohan believes YouTube is well-suited for future growth. He touted the platform’s success in international markets — according to a 2021 Oxford Economics study,...

The top executive succeeded longtime executive Susan Wojcicki earlier this month, when the former CEO announced she was stepping down to focus on her “family, health and personal projects.” In taking up the reins, Mohan said some of his top priorities were about “supporting the success of creators” by improving monetization tools, increasing accessibility and growing creator communities in areas like gaming.

It’s not cost-cutting, it’s efficiency. That’s the idea Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg aimed to sell to investors Feb. 1, when he outlined 2023 as the “Year of Efficiency” for the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. It came after Meta had laid off 13 percent of its workforce and downsized its office space in light of the tough macroeconomic environment and overhiring, alongside other company-specific factors like its pricey foray into the metaverse.
Rather than view that as a negative, Zuckerberg positioned it as more of a rallying cry, even while cautioning that there would be more “efficiency” to come. “A lot of the time, when people talk about efficiency, there is a lot of focus on prioritization and which big things can you cut. But I actually think what makes you a better company over time is being able to execute and do more things because you’re operating more efficiently,...

Each year, the World Economic Forum invites leaders from around the world to a meeting in Davos, Switzerland. In recent years, influencers have traveled to Europe to attend the event, and that tradition continued in 2023. The latest creator contingent at the Forum includes idea man Nas Daily and Mexican megastar Luisito Comunica.
Nas (real name Nuseir Yassin) and Luisito are the two most-followed creators at Davos this year, with 10.4 million and 39.8 million YouTube subscribers, respectively. Other Davos attendees with active channels include Indian comedian Prajakta Koli of Mostly Sane, Ghanaian vlogger Wode Maya, Brazilian economist Nathalia Arcuri of Me Poupe, and Nigerian doctor Adanna Steinacker of House of Adanna.
The World Economic Forum introduced these Davos denizens through a blog post. As the creators arrived in Switzerland, they showed up in videos on the Forum’s official YouTube channel.
This is not the first time YouTube has established a presence among the elites at Davos.

It had been in the works for months behind the scenes but NFL Sunday Ticket officially has a new home for the 2023-2024 season, and it's a streaming service. As announced by the NFL in a press release, YouTube has secured the rights to the white whale of sports deals, which had previously been with DirecTV for a number of years. Now, as the NFL looks to double down on streaming and move away from more traditional TV, YouTube has emerged the victor in something of a surprise. But what does it mean for football fans and, more importantly, those who simply enjoy watching TV? Let's get into it.
First off, Sunday Ticket, which allows viewers to watch all out-of-market games on Sundays, will be available through either YouTube TV or YouTube Primetime Channels. YouTube TV is a live TV subscription service similar to Sling or Fubo that currently begins at 64.99 per month.

The NFL and Google have sealed a multi-year agreement giving YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels exclusive rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket package in the U.S.
The pact, which takes effect in 2023, replaces a partnership between the league and DirecTV since the introduction of the Sunday Ticket package — which delivers a full buffet of out-of-market games to subscribers — in 1994. The NFL had held talks for months with multiple bidders, indicating last summer that it would likely head to a streaming service. Streaming has been a growing priority of the league given the surge in spending by digital players on live sports in recent years. Amazon, which now has exclusive rights to Thursday night games, was in the mix for Sunday Ticket, as was Apple.

Another big sports offering is moving from linear TV to streaming: YouTube will be the new home of the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package, starting next season, ending a decades-long partnership with DirecTV, the NFL announced Thursday.
The package — which allows viewers to watch every NFL game on Sundays instead of just the local games carried on broadcast TV — will be available as a separately priced add-on to subscribers of YouTube TV as well as the recently launched YouTube Primetime Channels, which collects content from 30 different streaming services in one hub. Pricing has not been disclosed as of press time.

The NFL is taking another big step into the streaming world.
The league has struck a deal with Google’s YouTube for rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket subscription package beginning with the 2023 season. YouTube will take over Sunday Ticket from previous rights holder DirecTV, whose contract is up at the end of this season.
Sunday Ticket, which lets users watch Sunday afternoon games not aired by CBS and Fox in their home markets, will be available through the YouTube TV multichannel streaming video service, as well as through YouTube Primetime Channels, where users can subscribe to standalone offerings like Showtime and Starz.
“We’re excited to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels and usher in a new era of how fans across the United States watch and follow the NFL,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

YouTube is bringing its library of vertical videos to wide screens. The video platform has announced that YouTube Shorts will now be available on smart TVs via a shelf on the YouTube app.
The Shorts shelf will be accessible from the YouTube app on streaming devices, gaming consoles, and smart TVs from 2019 or later. The vertical videos will be framed with the outline of a smartphone, in order to mimic the devices on which Shorts viewership feels most natural.
In a blog post, YouTube explained the process that led it to its chosen layout. When it first considered bringing YouTube Shorts to TV, it mocked up three different designs: A “consistent” look that resembled the long-form version of YouTube, a “jukebox” array that let viewers leaf through Shorts, and the “customized” style that was ultimately chosen. According to YouTube, the first option lacked “the joy of Shorts” while the jukebox...
Agustín Laje winces in disgust as he tells his listeners, in graphic detail, about a controversial medical procedure young people are getting in America. There’s just one problem: He’s making a lot of it up.
“Fourteen-year-olds who can’t, for example, even have a beer in the United States,” Laje says, are being allowed to “construct artificial penisis made for themselves” by “removing the girl’s skin” and “removing the muscle” on her arm. “You can see the bone, it’s very unpleasant to look at.”

YouTube just found another way to increase its presence on TV screens. It has announced Primetime Channels, a one-stop shop where visitors can purchase individual subscriptions for services like Showtime, Starz, Paramount+, and AMC+.
At launch, more than 30 services are reaching customers through Primetime Channels. The available channels have been collected on YouTube’s Movies and Shows hub, where visitors can purchase subscriptions, films, and series a la carte.
In a blog post, YouTube described the current iteration of Primetime Channels as an “early version” that is only available in the U.S. At a later date, YouTube plans to add more subscriptions to its roster, and it could expand Primetime Channels to other regions as well.
“We are excited to expand our partnership with YouTube to offer customers of Paramount+ another way to stream the content they love,” said Jeff Shultz, Chief Strategy Officer and Business Development Officer at Paramount Streaming,...

Democrat officials are urging YouTube to scrub incel content from its platform.
Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), along with nine other Democrat co-signers, sent an open letter to YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and Alphabet/Google CEO Sundar Pichai Oct. 25 calling YouTube an “easily-accessible [pathway] into the larger ‘incelosphere.'”
The letter cited a recent report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (Ccdh), which examined 1,183,812 posts made by users on “the world’s leading public incel websites and pages, as well as content on YouTube.” The YouTube content had collectively amassed more than 24 million views, per the report.
For those unfamiliar, incels—aka “involuntary celibates”–are men who believe women are sex dispensers, and that being denied sex is the source of all their problems.
As the letter states, incel ideology has been linked to the maiming or murder of over 100 people, mostly women, over the last decade.

TikTok has been working on its dislike button since the pre-covid days. Now, that feature has been rolled out worldwide.
In a series of tweets, the short-form video app announced that users around the world can now give a thumbs down to any comment they deem improper, hateful, or spammy. Like on YouTube, dislike counts will be hidden from the public, and the negative feedback will be mainly be used to “better identify irrelevant or inappropriate comments.”
New feature incoming. Earlier this year, we started to test a new way people could identify comments they believe to be irrelevant or inappropriate. After some testing, we’re releasing it globally. Read on for 3 fast facts

As creators increasingly diversify their presence across all major social platforms, companies like YouTube and Twitch are rewriting the rules around revenue sharing and rethinking just how generous they should be with their content partners.
On Sept. 20, YouTube, led by Susan Wojcicki, unveiled a series of creator-driven announcements, including a plan to bring its “secret sauce,” its revenue-sharing model, to its shortform product, Shorts. But there’s a catch: While longer-form YouTube videos pay out 55 percent of their ad revenue to creators and 45 percent to YouTube, the shortform version flips that, with only 45 percent of total revenue going to creators (the rest covers costs of music licensing). Creators’ payouts will be determined by their contribution to the total Shorts views every 30 days, which means that as more users upload Shorts, it could become more difficult for a user to take up a larger percentage of total viewership,...

After Robert Kyncl officially steps down as YouTube’s Chief Business Officer, he will dive right back into the entertainment business with a glamorous new title. Kyncl, who spent 12 years at YouTube and seven years at Netflix before that, will take over as the CEO of Warner Music Group, replacing outgoing chief Stephen Cooper.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced in August that Kyncl would abdicate his Cbo title in 2023 in order to “start the next chapter in his career.” At the time, neither Wojcicki nor Kyncl indicated where the Czech-born businessman would head next, but it didn’t take long before major businesses began bidding for his services. On September 18 — three weeks after Kyncl’s career move was announced — Bloomberg indicated that Warner Music was courting the longtime YouTube operative.

As part of a live-streaming event called Made On YouTube, the biggest online video platform in the world made multiple announcements. In 2023, ads will begin running in between videos on YouTube Shorts. To compensate creators for the ad revenue they generate, YouTube will adjust its Partner Program to make monetization easier to enable on short-form channels.
The new ad format will bring Shorts monetization in line with YouTube’s other revenue streams.
This year, the theme of YouTube’s creator relations has been “multiformat.” The platform has repeatedly encouraged its community to post a mix of long-form videos, short-form clips, and live streams. Adding reliable monetization to Shorts will give creators a reason to adopt that approach.
“From a business perspective, the key benefit of Shorts for me is that they help me pull people into my community, whereas for long-form, it brings in a lot more revenue,” short-form star...

A long-rumored revenue stream for YouTube‘s TikTok competitor is imminent. According to a report in the New York Times, YouTube will announce Shorts ads at an event on September 20.
The report cites audio from an internal YouTube meeting, which was leaked to the Times. During the meeting, YouTube VP of Product Management and Creator Products Amjad Hanif told employees that the launch of YouTube Shorts ads will usher in a new era for the platform’s Partner Program. The advertising option, which has been a primary source of income for a myriad of YouTube creators since its introduction in 2007, is likely to expand in the near future.
In 2018, YouTube mandated that creators must have at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of total watch time if they wish to enter into the Partner Program. If Hanif’s comments in the leaked audio clip are to be believed, those requirements are about to be slackened.

YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl is leaving the company.
He’ll exit in early 2023, according to a staff memo sent today by CEO Susan Wojcicki. The memo was first obtained by Variety.
Kyncl joined YouTube in 2010, and as Cbo has overseen everything from content (including YouTube’s ultimately ill-fated Originals push) to sales, marketing, and growth strategy.
“Under his leadership, YouTube forged new relationships and partnerships in music, traditional media and tech, and our creator ecosystem – without him, the term ‘YouTuber’ wouldn’t be a mainstream term,” Wojcicki wrote.
She added, “Thanks to Robert and his leadership team, we are meaningfully contributing to the media industry, having paid more than 30B to creators, artists and media companies in the last 3 years. We owe so much of our growth and impact to Robert’s leadership, and I want to celebrate his amazing contribution to YouTube.”
