In frilly YA frivol “The King’s Daughter,” Louis Xiv (an awkwardly bewigged Pierce Brosnan) orders a mermaid captured and brought back to Versailles, so that he might sacrifice the creature during a solar eclipse and attain eternal life, it takes just a few minutes for such an amazing feat to be accomplished. But haste is hardly the order of the day with this quasi-historic fairy tale, which follows that thrilling opening with royal balls and cross-country horseback rides, courtly intrigue and plentiful costume changes — a girly dream of the French monarchy, for which would-be audiences have been obliged to wait a quarter-century.

Two new wide releases open this weekend, but we are looking at another weekend dominated byScream and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The face-off between the two franchise films has animated an otherwise quiet January, and while Scream swiftly displaced Spidey from the top spot last weekend with a steady lead at $30 million compared to $20 million, this weekend’s rematch could be a close one. Spider-Man, going into its sixth weekend, has seen drops in recent weeks of around 40%, and another similar drop this weekend would put it around $12 million. That’s right where Scream would be at with a 60% drop, so this weekend’s number one could go in either direction. With no new wide releases slated for next weekend, expect another rematch for the top spot.

Imagine there’s no VHS tapes. I wonder if you can. For the earliest Trekkies, the ability to own your favorite episode of Star Trek wasn’t difficult, it was impossible. This meant that some other media was required to record the true logs of the USS Enterprise. Enter books. The most reliable data storage device in history, and the first and possibly best destiny for Star Trek merch.
Since 1967, there have literally been thousands of officially licensed Star Trek books published. The question is, if fans only care about “real” canon do any of the Star Trek books actually qualify as part of the “real” story of the Final Frontier. The answer doesn’t fall into a simple binary. Star Trek books have been an integral part of the growth of the franchise since the very beginning. Here’s a quick and dirty guide to the mixed canonicity of the various Star Trek books.

Captain Picard will return to our screens in a new Star Trek series, but is he all that’s needed to rekindle the Next Generation flame?
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Even with the success of the divisive Star Trek: Discovery ringing fresh in our ears, CBS’s bold declaration that it was not only renewing the show for a second season, but also investigating a staggering five additional entries in the Star Trek canon, couldn’t help but raise a few Spock-styled eyebrows. Wisely, the network decided to allay fears of franchise fatigue with a piece of news that seemed designed to elicit good will, especially from fans who remained sceptical of alternative takes on the Original Series era: Sir Patrick Stewart is set to return as Jean-Luc Picard.
The response to this news was, by and large, incredibly positive. Articles and videos...

Sometimes, it’s not easy being a former James Bond. Pierce Brosnan made a movie, titled The Moon And The Sun, with Academy Award winner William Hurt, and Paramount Pictures has just cancelled its imminent release. It would have been Brosnan’s first film since the triple 2014 disappointment of The Love Punch, The November Man and A Long Way Down.
Directed by Sean McNamara (Field Of Lost Shoes), The Moon And The Sun is based on the award-winning 1997 novel of the same name by Vonda N. McIntyre. The story brings together elements of science fiction and historical romance, to tell the tale of the Sun King, King Louis Xiv (Brosnan) in 17th Century France, and his quest for immortality.
Seeking endless youth, he dispatches representatives to capture endangered sea monsters, rumoured to provide eternal life. Father Yves de la Croix (Benjamin Walker) returns with two – one dead and one alive.
