Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music––whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed that notion in 2023.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each perfectly transported us. Check out our rundown of the top 20, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.

Few people would accuse Christopher Nolan of lacking ambition. But listening to Ludwig Göransson’s score for Oppenheimer, with its flurries of tremolando strings, tenderly arpeggiating harps, and surging orchestral minor chords, one thing becomes clear: most of this music could have been written, recorded, and slapped on a grandiose prestige picture any time in the last fifty years. Nolan’s blockbuster is not alone in this, and it’s not an issue confined to the year’s studio tentpole releases, either. Both Talk To Me and No One Will Save You, otherwise innovative lower-budget genre films with plenty of good ideas between them, are nonetheless let down by safe, overly familiar scores. The blame almost certainly isn’t to be laid at the feet of the composers. Even talented musicians like Bobby Krlic can end up producing middling fare when hemmed in by the wrong picture (witness the Midsommar...

They soon discover that each one of their deaths directly corresponds to one of the seven deadly sins.
The film, which stars stars Jojo Siwa and Jade Pettyjohn, is currently in post-production.

The Haxan Cloak is back. Listen to “N/Y,” Bobby Krlic’s first song under the moniker since 2013, below.
“‘N/Y’ is a feeling I’ve had for a really long time,” The Haxan Cloak shared in a statement. “It was made with the intention of being something that I could play live only, and was just this burst of intensity that could re-contextualize anywhere I would play it in. I kept working on it and it became something that I wanted to hear regardless of the context.”
Krlic also directed the single’s music video, which he said he made “in the same way. Making charcoal drawings and oil paintings, then fusing these together with self-shot video of myself in my studio. It feels immediate and without compromise. It was made quickly, in a moment, with complete intention. I really hope it changes the space you’re in.”

A creatively orphaned movie about the power of family, Ángel Manuel Soto’s “Blue Beetle” is being released at a strange moment in time, both for superhero movies in general, and for the Dceu in particular (a damaged brand undergoing the kind of rebuild that you typically only find in salary-capped sports leagues).
On the one hand, the first Latino-led superhero outing from a major studio is a long-overdue lifeline to a woefully underrepresented community of loyal moviegoers, and “Blue Beetle” works hard to ensure that its culture isn’t just another dreadfully rendered CGI costume — the film has plenty of those, which makes it that much easier to tell the difference. On the other hand, this ultra-bland origin story is so feckless and familiar that it seldom feels like the first of anything so much as it does a half-hearted invitation to a party that’s already in the process of shutting down.

With Blue Beetle set to hit theaters in just one week, the first reactions to the DC movie have begun to emerge on social media. The reaction has been quite positive overall, as it usually is at this stage, but those who saw the film have praised it as fun, hilarious, and a love letter to Latino culture.
I was so profoundly moved how the film also captured our latinidad and nuance. A star is born in Xolo Maridueña and I hope he continues in the role in the future Dcu.

The #BlueBeetle movie is mostly a blast.
Some is too silly or childish for me, a lot had me laughing loud (George Lopez!). Practical suit rocks. The Latino representation is awesome.
Enjoyed the family-centric stakes, solid action beats. Overall, it’s fun. pic.twitter.com/5qzWIkmDyE

While starring in Netflix’s hit series Beef, Steven Yeun had the opportunity to show off the musical skills he honed growing up in church when his character delivers an acoustic cover of Incubus’ turn-of-the-century hit “Drive.” Now, A24 Music has unveiled the full track as part of an EP of bonus tracks from the show. Stream it below.
Created by Lee Sung Jin, Beef centers around Yeun as Danny Cho and comedian Ali Wong as Amy Lau. After getting involved in a road rage incident, their lives intertwine and go down a deep, dark path. The pivotal scene when Yeun performs “Drive” takes place during Episode 3, “I Am Inhabited by a Cry,” when Danny tries to find meaning in his life by reconnecting with his faith through the praise band at his ex-girlfriend’s Orange County church.

In the first episode of “Wednesday,” Jenna Ortega’s title character plays a cello cover of The Rolling Stones’ goth anthem “Paint It Black.” Pulling off such a scene required licensing the song, orchestrating a new arrangement of it, and teaching Ortega how to play it — all while the traditional scoring process was taking place. It’s a fusion of old and new that helped make the show a cultural phenomenon when it debuted on Netflix in November 2022. And while the production team might have made it look easy, it required intense coordination between multiple departments.

Ari Aster‘s three-hour surrealist drama “Beau Is Afraid” marked a tonal shift from his nightmare-inducing films “Midsommar” and “Hereditary.”
In the feature, which tackles inherited trauma and mommy issues, Joaquin Phoenix plays Beau, who finds himself on an Odyssean journey to return home after his mother’s untimely death. To score the film, Aster recruited “Midsommar” composer Bobby Krlic, but, unlike their last collaboration, creating the music of “Beau Is Afraid” was a “long and arduous process” as they worked to crack the sound of Beau’s journey.
Here, the two discuss their collaboration and how one cue, “Suburban Dream,” helped unlock the film’s sonic landscape.
How would you describe your relationship and how it has evolved since you first met?
Aster: I reached out to him because I had written “Midsommar” while listening to his music, specifically his first self-titled album as the Haxan Cloak. It put...

In addition to being a thoughtful series about misplaced rage, mental health, and the “myth of the model minority,” the Netflix show “Beef” is also one of the year’s best party playlists. Created by Lee Sung Jin, the show has been praised for its soundtrack of late ‘90s and early ‘00s pop classics from bands like Incubus, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Bush. “I had a lot of the songs in the outline stage. When you do that as a writer, you assume you’re never going to get those songs. But thanks to A24, Netflix and our music supervisor, Tiffany Anders, we got every single song I wanted,” Lee said in an earlier interview with the Los Angeles Times. “It took some personal letters to some frontman bands, but it all worked out.”

Netflix dropped the soundtrack for its hit limited thriller series “Beef.”
The 10-episode miniseries, which debuted on Netflix April 6, carries a name that completely conveys its plot. “Beef” centers on two strangers — a failing contractor named Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), and an unsatisfied entrepreneur named Amy Lau (Ali Wong) — whose worlds literally collide after they get into a road rage incident. When things escalate, the feud brings out their innermost darkest sides.
The cast includes Wong, Yeun, Young Mazino, David Choe, Mia Serafino, Ashley Park, Justin H. Min, Joseph Lee and Andrew Santino.
The A24-produced thriller was created by Lee Sung Jin, and executive produced by Jake Schreier, Ravi Nandan and Alli Reich. Series leads Wong and Yeun also serve as executive producers.
“Beef’s” original Score is by Bobby Krlic, and the soundtrack includes songs by prominent artists Christina Aguilera, Hoobstank and even tracks from Yeun and some of the cast.

Ari Aster’s first two films, 2018’s “Hereditary” and 2019’s “Midsommar,” cultivated the young director enough cachet for A24 to hand him a blank check for “Beau is Afraid,” his “Jewish ‘Lord of the Rings’” about the psychological horror of visiting your mother. The three-hour horror-comedy epic is the indie studio’s most expensive movie to date. Starring Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the stunted and anxiety-ridden Beau of the title, the movie defies easy categorization and is, expectedly, inspiring awe and disgust in nearly equal measure – often within individual viewers.
Beau lives in an urban hellscape that approximates what “New York City looked like in the mind of Travis Bickle and Bernhard Goetz” and is in a persistent state of waiting for the other shoe to drop. When it finally does, it’s a chandelier on top of his mother’s head (it wouldn’t be an Aster film...

Note: This post features major spoilers for “Beef.”
The Season 1 finale of Netflix’s “Beef” is explosive in every sense of the word, but concludes on a comforting moment of connection between Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yuen) as Amy shows her unconditional support for Danny as he recovers in the hospital after being shot by Amy’s husband, George (Joseph Lee). Though it’s unclear what terms their relationship will continue on, Danny’s subtle caress as Amy lays on his recovery bed signals their deep bond will persevere.
Of course, the mind can’t help but wander to a potential romantic entanglement between the pair — a development that would leave Paul (Young Mazino) with an “even bigger chip on his shoulder” and might prompt a new revenge spiral should the dramedy score a renewal for a second season.

One of the twisted joys of “Beef” is how the show escalates the drama between Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) after they cross paths in a road rage incident. The main enabler of the show’s anger management issues is the edit, which can wield a cut like a sledgehammer to emphasize or undercut a moment. But maybe the most fun way that “Beef” accelerates Amy’s and Danny’s revenge spiral is the placement of each episode’s opening title card.
The title card shots in “Beef” are abrupt but visually convey everything that makes the characters so flawed: Each card looks on its surface like a museum piece carrying some deeper artistic merit, especially given how the show’s score hypes up the shots. But that pretension to one specific meaning is betrayed by the font over the imagery and the cut to the episode titles – the score,...

Netflix’s “Beef” follows the escalating road-rage incident between wealthy entrepreneur Amy (Ali Wong) and failing contractor Danny (Steven Yeun). As Amy and Danny relish in vengeful schemes against one another, meanwhile concealing the extent of their discontent from their friends and family, composer Bobby Krlic opted for hits from the ’90s to mark the true emotional expression the pair is craving.
“The ’90s was this golden period where people just had their hearts on their sleeves with that kind of music,” Krlic told TheWrap. “They just express things very matter of factly and in a really unique, emotional way.”
Each episode in the 10-episode series concludes with a different ’90s hit, including Incubus’ “Drive, The Offspring’s “Self Esteem,” Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” and Tori Amos’ “Cornflake Girl,” among others. “All the songs say something unique,” Krlic added.
