In 2020, after Mattson Tomlin was reported as being a screenwriter working on what would become the Warner Bros. hit, The Batman, he was approached via social media and other channels by what he calls a “flurry” of folks from the comic industry.
One of those folks was Lee Bermejo, the artist known for his grim and gritty work on DC books such as Batman: Damned and Before Watchmen: Rorschach.
“I was posting frames from movies I was watching on Instagram and he saw them,” Tomlin recalls. Bermejo started a conversation that eventually moved to a meeting, the first of many, on Skype. “’We should do a book together,’ we said to each other.”
Now, almost three years later, that book is ready to be unveiled.

Brian Michael Bendis, the legendary comics writer and one of the sharpest eyes for talent in the entire comics industry, is wrapping up his long run on the Superman comics in December.
Bendis made the jump to DC in 2018, after a 17 year run at Marvel, and immediately landed on DC’s biggest character. Man of Steel launched his run which, when combined with his follow ups on Action Comics and Superman, will have stretched to almost 75 issues after December’s Action Comics #1028 and Superman #28 hit. And that doesn’t include the books that are all tying together when he wraps.
According to the solicitation text, these two issues will pull in pieces of everything Bendis has had a hand in creating since joining DC. That includes Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins’ Lois Lane; Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber’s superlative Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen; the monster, Scott Snyder-helmed...

AT&T, under constant attack by Time Warner shareholders because of the deterioration of Turner Broadcasting's CNN, now has the threat of their DC Comics brand being banned in China, unless a variant cover supporting writer Frank Miller's 48-page 'Black Label' one-shot, "The Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child", illustrated by Rafael Grampá, available December 11, 2019, be withdrawn from circulation:
In a cover for 'The Golden Child', 'Batwoman' is seen throwing a 'Molotov' cocktail in front of the words 'The Future Is Young'.
The depiction of the incendiary device is being linked to the violent tactics used by Hong Kong protesters, the black suit worn by the character alludes to protestor clothing and the title 'The Golden Child' references the color yellow, also a mark of the pro-democracy riots.
DC Comics, despite the pressure, immediately removed the offending illustration from social media, but still plans to...

A DC Comics ad image promoting its title Dark Knight Returns:The Golden Child has been taken down from at least one official social media account after China supporters claimed it subtly backed Hong Kong protesters.
The ad in question featured the cover art from the forthcoming book, featuring Batman throwing a Molotov cocktail, which has been a key tool of the Hong Kong activists in their battles with police. It also said, “The future is young,” which aggrieved China supporters saw as a salute to the protester demographics, largely college-age.
The poster was subsequently taken down from Twitter and Instagram by DC Comics. That sparked a counter-protest by those who support the Hong Kong protesters. The controversial cover art will reportedly remain on the book when it is released on Dec. 11.
The poster and title in question are part of a one-shot comic written by Frank Miller and illustrated by artist Rafael Grampá.
