As marketing experts prepare for this year’s Variety Entertainment Marketing Summit presented by Deloitte, many are focused on discovering new ways to create authentic relationships with consumers. While contemporary culture evolves faster than ever and the tastes of Gen Z and Gen Alpha are continually shifting, finding new ways to reach audiences has never been more challenging.
“People are just consuming our messaging in a thousand different ways,” says Ellene V. Miles, senior VP, intersectional marketing, Sony Pictures Entertainment/Motion Picture Group. “So that sort of blanket one size fits all approach isn’t as viable. I think being authentic to these audiences and meeting them where they live and meeting them with messaging that really speaks to them is critical to success, critical to awareness, and critical to the whole theatrical proposition.”

The pandemic has brought waves of layoffs to Hollywood entertainment companies, including more than 100,000 furloughs at Disney early in the pandemic, many of which have turned into 28,000 layoffs with another 4,000 layoffs to come in 2021.
Whether those layoffs will lead to a permanent change in the entertainment industry was the subject of the first WrapPRO Roundtable, a new monthly video series tapping Hollywood experts to go behind the scenes.
Two entertainment business experts, one from UCLA and one from USC, came together to talk about something besides football to discuss the new employment landscape.
Gene Del Vecchio, an adjunct professor of marketing at USC’s Marshall School of Business, and Jay Tucker, who heads up the Center for Management Enterprise in Media, Entertainment and Sports for UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, say that staggering furloughs and layoffs at mega-companies including Disney and NBCUniversal, as well as at smaller companies and studios,...

This is the winter of discontent for Hollywood workers, as no level of seniority has been spared from the wave of mass layoffs.
Warner Bros. has been shaken by two rounds of layoffs and a wholesale restructuring that have ushered out veterans with decades of service to the Hollywood studio.
NBCUniversal has rewired the structure of its TV content production and distribution operations, leading to hundreds of job cuts. ViacomCBS has periodically shed bodies by the dozens in the year since its two halves formally tied the knot again in December 2019. AMC Networks last week disclosed it will let go of 10% of its U.S. workforce, or about 100 staffers.
Discovery Inc., Sony Pictures and Lionsgate have also let sizable numbers of staffers go in 2020.
And Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s short-form video streaming service Quibi shut down just six months after a much-ballyhooed launch last April, leaving thousands of executives jobless.

Thanks to Lionsgate, students at Howard University in D.C. are getting a chance to learn the entertainment business through paid internship programs. Lionsgate is the first entertainment company to join forces with Howard University to start the educational institute’s program that has allows six to 12 students to learn the filmmaking and television businesses. The program’s partner is UCLA Anderson School of Business.
The idea for this came from Sen. Kamala Harris, who is a Howard alumni and mentioned to Lionsgate that intern programs with higher education could increase diversity across the entertainment business. “She was one of the catalysts to help raise awareness around this opportunity,” Jay Tucker, Exec Director at the Center for Memes at UCLA told Deadline. “It really helped to get the ball rolling.”
Lionsgate hopes to grow this program to include other HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities) and women...
