Disney+ is preparing to launch its largest slate of new originals to date for the growth markets of the Asia-Pacific region, the Walt Disney Co. said Monday.
The lineup, which includes more than 20 new series and films, will roll out across the second half of 2023, with the bulk of the programming coming from Korea and Japan. Highlights include a new documentary about Korean supergroup BTS, several Korean crime thrillers and much-anticipated Japanese anime titles like Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku Arc and Phoenix: Eden17.
Coming at a time of “rationalized” content spending across the industry, Disney’s continued commitment to localized originals for Asia-Pacific underscores the growing popularity of Korean drama and Japanese anime throughout the world, as well as the continued importance of the region as a long-term driver of revenue growth.
Disney tends not to release much data on the viewership of its international originals. But it provided some indicators...

When Studio Ghibli first announced its plans to build a theme park in 2017, it was clear right away that the approach would be unconventional. If an amusement park is a theme park without the theming, Ghibli Park has now positioned itself as the opposite: a theme park without the cotton-candy amusement of thrill rides. While not without fun for fans of the studio's classic animated movie catalog, this is an eat-your-veggies type of theme park with a website that openly states, "There are no big attractions or rides in Ghibli Park."
Another thing that makes the place unique by theme park standards is that no trees were harmed in the making of Ghibli Park. Forget the state's bellicose governor; to this day, some Florida conservationists still hold a grudge against Walt Disney for turning flyover swamp land into a tourist trap where you can take fake jungle cruises.

The “quad king” reigns.
Eighteen-year-old Nathan Chen rebounded on Saturday from back-to-back disappointments in his first two Olympic skates to land six quadruple jumps in a single routine — something that no one here has ever done before.
Almost all of them he spun off fast and easy as a top, showing the same skill that has twice made him the U.S. figure skating champion. It was a fitting if surprising finale to his last competitive appearance at the 2018 Winter Games.

Throw your Pooh bears in the air, and hurl ’em like you just don’t care!
The Olympic men’s free skate competition took place Friday night at Gangeung Ice Arena in PyeongChang, a rink that had been littered with plush Winnie the Pooh toys after Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu (the 2014 gold medalist with a thing for the honey fiend) completed his performance in Thursday’s short program. Indeed, Hanyu was in the lead going into the free skate, followed by Spain’s Javier Fernanzdez in second and Japan’s Shoma Uno in third.

Nathan Chen fell last week and he has not stopped falling.
The 18-year-old two-time national figure skating champion took the ice on Friday afternoon at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Gangneung, South Korea, for the second of two short programs, this time in the men’s individual event
Though he improved on his total score, earning an 82.27 compared to an 80.61 for his short program last week in the figure skating team event, he fell twice and slipped almost from the start.
Speaking to the press afterward, Chen said he “made as many mistakes as I possibly could have.”
