While they’ve inspired such enjoyable exaggerations as FX’s “Devs” and Apple’s “Mythic Quest,” the inner workings of the real-life tech space have largely been deemed off-limits by producers. A heightened threat of litigation is doubtless one reason; equally, round-the-clock coding rarely makes for the most compelling spectator sport, however pounding the electronica you set it to. Plus, David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 feature “The Social Network,” on the turbulent genesis of Facebook, set the bar stratospherically high.
“Wallander” producers Yellow Bird believe they’ve sourced a comparably gripping tale in “The Playlist,” a six-part Netflix miniseries centring on Swedish success story Spotify, the streaming platform that revolutionized music listening while causing understandable conniptions in Neil Young. In a case of one disrupter telling the story of another, Netflix has boarded a series about the creation of Spotify, the Swedish startup that’s become one of the world’s leading music services.
The as-yet-untitled limited series, to be directed by Per-Olav Sørensen (“Quicksand”), is inspired by the book “Spotify Untold” by Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud, who are business reporters at Sweden’s Dagens Industri.
The series will follow young Swedish tech entrepreneur Daniel Ek and his partner, Martin Lorentzon, who revolutionized the music industry at a turbulent time when it was being damaged by piracy and controlled by heavy-hitters who were fighting each other for a bigger piece of the pie. The pair took the industry by storm by offering free and legal streamed music around the world.

Netflix will tell the origin story of Swedish music streaming service Spotify in a yet-to-be-titled series from Young Wallander producer Yellow Bird UK.
The scripted series, which has echoes of Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 movie The Social Network, will be based on the book Spotify Untold, which was published this year by business journalists Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud.
It tells the story of how Swedish tech entrepreneur Daniel Ek and business partner Martin Lorentzon revolutionized the music industry through free and legal music streaming when they launched Spotify in 2006. Netflix said it is a drama about how hard convictions, unrelenting will and big dreams can challenge the status quo.
The untitled series will be directed by Per-Olav Sørensen, while Berna Levin (Young Wallander) is the executive producer. Luke Franklin is the producer.

It’s a Taylor Swift world this week, as the superstar’s first major label album, Lover, is out. There’s a media blitz afoot for the new recording, but the most intriguing questions of that press tour center on Swift’s first five albums, owned by her arch-nemesis, Scooter Braun, via his Big Machine label purchase. It seems Swift is planning a cold revenge, despite the fact that Braun has again extended an olive branch to Swift, praising the new album. So far, no response, at least publicly.
This week in music:
Can Taylor Duplicate Herself? Her new album, Lover, is out, so Taylor Swift is making the media rounds. But more than the nuances of the new album, what everyone wants to know is if she will follow through with her threats to re-record her first five albums. The rights to those recordings are held by Big Machine Media,...

Spotify has made no secret of wanting to be the world’s biggest audio platform, but it wasn’t all that long ago that the Swedish streamer was eyeing video. From 2011 to 2015, CEO Daniel Ek was engaging in ambitious, top-secret plans to challenge Netflix, Hulu and Apple TV in one fell swoop, the new book “Spotify Untold” reveals. Swedish journalists Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud, tech reporters for Stockholm-based Di Digital, uncover the internal vision for Spotify TV in one of many illuminating chapters from their self-described corporate biography.
Among the book’s revelations: Spotify came close to buying Tidal, and even closer to acquiring SoundCloud; Microsoft, Google and Tencent all offered to buy Spotify at various points; Ek scored a valuable partnership with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg just ahead of Spotify’s U.S. launch; and Ek and Apple founder Steve Jobs had strained — and strange — relations.
