While consumers may revolt over HBO Max yanking shows like “Westworld” and “The Nevers” to license them to third-party free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) services, industry insiders say Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest cost-cutting measures actually plays well to investors.
The move signals that CEO David Zaslav and his team believe “siloing certain assets is no longer the best way to maximize value,” Monroe Capital’s head of media finance Matthew Rosenberg told TheWrap.
“The question has been how do we build enterprise value in HBO Max? Up until now, it’s been let’s just send all of our stuff there,” Rosenberg said. “Maybe the anchor stuff belongs to be siloed, like the DC movies… but for less critical properties, maximizing value to that company could mean licensing it into the market rather than siloing it from within.”

Gotham's villains return from the dead and the Justice League fights vampires! That's what's in store for DC readers this October, when Task Force Z and DC vs. Vampires! hits shelves just in time for Halloween. Here's the official press release from DC and a look at the cover art:
Burbank, CA - July 13, 2021 - This October, the DC Universe gets a whole lot scarier with Task Force Z and DC Vs. Vampires! Writer Matthew Rosenberg (The Joker Presents: A Puzzlebox; 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank) is dragging some of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains back from the dead to earn a second chance at life in Task Force Z. But the undead aren’t contained to Gotham City; in DC Vs. Vampires, Rosenberg has teamed up with writer James Tynion IV (The Nice House on the Lake; Something is Killing the Children) for a twelve-issue maxiseries where the Justice League discovers that,...

I had promised myself I would steer away from Batman titles for awhile, as there are just too darn many of them. I love the character and his extended family of characters, but the absolute flood of bat-titles at the moment just screams corporate cash grab. As with most things I try to give up, however, I failed at the first attempt. This book came on the schedule, digitally speaking, and it was just too tempting. The cover looked intriguing, the promo blurb was promising, and it had a solid creative team. I justify my backtracking on the grounds that if the quality is good, then a large amount of books based around one character can be justified. As with the 1990’s crash, you tend to find things start that way, then it just becomes a case...

The Punisher is a former soldier turned gun-toting vigilante on a one-man mission to violently rid the streets of crime. As such, it’s no surprise whatsoever that the character has many fans in law enforcement and the military. This has long presented Marvel Entertainment with a dilemma, as military units, police departments, militias and various extreme right-wing groups have appropriated the iconic Punisher skull as their own.
That symbol has come to the forefront during the protests against the murder of George Floyd. Pictures of riot cops forcibly restraining peaceful protestors while sporting Punisher skull patches is not a good look for Marvel, especially as they’ve publicly supported Black Lives Matters and Disney has pledged $5 million in funds to support it (beginning with a $2 million donation to the NAACP).
Now, fans have launched a campaign for the studio to take action. Pointing to The Walt Disney Company’s...

As protests against police brutality go global and enter their third week, Marvel Comics has faced increasing calls to get the Punisher skull off of police gear. The skull is often added to bootleg tactical merchandise used by police and the military (both at home and abroad), as well as, occasionally, official police gear. When pressed on the matter, though, a Marvel spokesperson told io9 precisely nothing. The spokesperson affirmed to io9 that they were taking the issue very seriously, referred readers to a page from a recent issue of the Punisher’s comic, and pointed to the company’s prior statement on social media.
The Punisher was created by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru and John Romita, Sr. in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man. He is a former Marine sniper whose family is viciously murdered by the Mafia after witnessing a killing in Central Park, a man who is so...

I want to start things off this week for looking at how Wolverine is being reincorporated into the X-Men universe via his appearances in the flag ship book Uncanny X-Men. I read the first six issues digitally and I found them to be very consistent. Its biggest strengths are that it gives as much equal page time to each character in a very large cast as possible. There is a great blend between the older established fan favourite characters and the new cult characters with online cult followings. I see it as paying great respect to X-Men stories past and present. Also even after countless X-Men stories since the 60′s the first six issues to this incarnation of Uncanny manages to feel fresh and new and that is its crowning glory. I recommend checking it out,...
