AMC Networks will not be continuing its animated science-fiction series “Pantheon,” even though a second season has already been produced. There remains a possibility that the series could be licensed or sold to another platform.
The decision regarding “Pantheon” was made months ago, declared in a list of programming write-offs in early December of last year. The embattled network’s cost-cutting measures include 400 million for “strategic programming assessments” and 75 million for “organizing restructuring costs,” per an SEC filing.
The animated series, which starred the voices of Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Dano, Taylor Schilling and the late William Hurt, joins a growing list of programming cutbacks at the network. Earlier this week, Variety reported that the second season of the Courtney B. Vance series “61st Street” would be scrapped, despite production on four episodes having already been completed. “Invitation to a Bonfire,” an adaptation of Adrienne Celt’s book of the...

Perhaps AMC should stand for Another Maddening Cancellation. As AMC Networks’ canceling spree continues, the company has nixed the animated AMC+ series Pantheon after one season, even though it had ordered two seasons and the second season had already been produced. In another blow to fans, the first season of Pantheon has been removed from the AMC+ library, according to Deadline, which first reported the cancellation news. Created by Craig Silverstein and based on short stories by award-winning author Ken Liu, Pantheon“explore[d] the theme of technology through the lens of family, focusing on both the people whose brains have been digitally uploaded and the loved ones they’ve left behind,” AMC Networks said in an August 2022 press release. “Maddie [Katie Chang], a bullied teen, receives help from someone online. It turns out that the person is her deceased father, David [Daniel Dae Kim]. His consciousness has been uploaded to...

AMC+’s Pantheon posits a near future in which not one but two different companies have cracked the code to “uploaded intelligence” (Ui) — distinct from AI in that these aren’t sentient consciousnesses born of computers but ones born as humans, and then digitized into the cloud at the end of their corporeal lives. The approaches taken by Logorhythms and Alliance differ in minor points but, strikingly, both have chosen to deploy this bleeding-edge science in the same way: by stripping the UIs of everything but their professional skills so that they can continue toiling without end in the afterlife, trapped in simulated offices with little memory of any existence beyond work.
Like so many of the most compelling sci-fi concepts, it’s a scenario that feels simultaneously farfetched and depressingly familiar. (Is there anything easier to imagine than, say, Facebook doing exactly...

For any adult still avoiding animation out of some stubborn refusal to understand its advantages as a both visual and storytelling medium, “Pantheon” makes its ambitions known from the get-go. After the eerie opening theme, scoring a fluorescent string of code smashing through a Greek statue, the show cuts to a high-school classroom, where a blunt voiceover lays the stakes bare. “Most of the girls in my class completely missed the moment when the world began to end,” teen outcast Maddie Kim (Katie Chang) tells us, the laptops blinking in unison as if in agreement. It’s a fittingly arresting start to this unnerving series, which taps an all-star cast to meld micro character work with macro questions about technology that may never have a satisfying answer.
Created by Dan Silverstein, and based on Ken Liu’s short stories, “Pantheon” layers conspiracies on top of the even more bitter truth at every turn.

If you had the chance to live forever, would you take it? This question is central to Ken Ishikawa’s “Arc”, which made its debut in Japan in the summer of 2021. The film is based on the 2012 short story written by American author Ken Liu and deals with the ethics and philosophical implications of immortality through the eyes of an artistic and expressive young woman. Surprisingly heartfelt and beautifully shot, the film is a serene sci-fi escape that raises challenging questions.
“Arc” is screening at Asian Pop-up Cinema
Rina (Kyoko Yoshine) is a down on her luck young dancer whose chance encounter with creative genius Ema (Shinobu Terajima) lands her a job at ‘Eternity’. Keen to make the most of the opportunity presented, Rina dives headfirst into the company’s ‘BodyWerks’ endeavour, which sees dead bodies perfectly preserved and transformed into ‘living’ sculptures through a process called plastination. George Takei has lived through cataclysmic times, but he’s never given up his hope for a better future. You can see this sense of hope in his choices of projects, whether it’s the vision of Gene Roddenbery in Star Trek or in his most recent project, narrating two stories by Ken Liu for Serial Box.
“Many of my friends are saying, ‘This is cataclysmic, what we’re living through. It’s dystopian, everything being destroyed, this is the end of the earth,’” he says. “I tell them, ‘No, we go through many cataclysms.’ And I tell them about my childhood.”
As a child during World War II, Takei’s family was taken to Japanese Internment Camps. At five, he thought living in the swamps of Arkansas, surrounded by barbed wire and guarded by soldiers, was a great adventure. For his parents, it was sheer cataclysm. Forced from their home at gunpoint,...
