Killer Films had a killer 2023, and 2024 is looking equally rosy for the beloved independent production company. Fresh off the heels of scoring a Best Picture nomination for “Past Lives” (the company’s first-ever nomination in that category), co-founder Christine Vachon and Killer Films will be honored at the 6th Annual Kodak Film Awards February 23 with the Film Production Company of the Year award, alongside Celine Song, Ava DuVernay, Hoyte Van Hoytema, Petra Collins, Andrew Haigh, and the limited series “Swarm.”
Although digital continues to be the norm for film productions, 2023 proved to be a banner year for movies shot on film, as evidenced by the breadth of work from this year’s Kodak Film Award honorees, ranging from Song’s intimate “Past Lives” to Hoytema’s epic work on “Oppenheimer.” And 2024 looks equally promising for devoted fans of movies shot on film, with the buzzy releases of “Challengers,” “Nosferatu,” and more.

There’s no doubting that the budgets and ambitions of music videos have dwindled since the glory days of MTV. We live in the age of TikTok-targeted ephemera. Yet miraculously, 2023 gave a much-needed shot of cinematic life to the form.
The best videos of the year emphasized meticulous technique over virality, offering intimate, impressionistic portraits of their respective artists’ interior lives and thoughts. Lana Del Rey and Lucy Dacus subverted Old Hollywood tropes, with a meta riff on studio system-era glamor and a lesbian tweaking of Wizard of Oz, respectively.
Others went bigger. Troye Sivan brought back the sheen and unabashed sexuality of Y2K pop princesses with a drag transformation that represents the performance of his career to date. Doja Cat took a maximalist approach to portraying the simultaneous highs and horrors of stardom, while Olivia Rodrigo constructed an elaborate, blood-splattered supernatural story to rival The Lost Boys.

FX released the official trailer for “American Horror Stories” Season 3, the spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series “American Horror Story.” The spin-off features a different horror story in each episode.
The trailer revealed that “Real Housewives” alum Lisa Rinna will star in the “Tapeworm” episode of Season 3, which premieres Oct. 26. The official logline for that installment reads, “An up-and-coming model will stop at nothing in her hunger for success.” The episode was written by Joe Baken and directed by Alexis Martin Woodall.
“Smize for the camera, sweetie,” Rinna’s character says in the trailer. She later responds to a young patient’s concern about a monster inside of her with the question, “But are you hungry?”
Alongside Rinna, the “Tapeworm” cast includes Laura Kariuki, Hazel Graye and Rob Yang.
From the trailer, it looks like Yang prescribes Kariuki’s model a tapeworm to help her lose weight for her modeling career.

11 August 2023 – Today, multi-Platinum-selling three-time Grammy®-winner Olivia Rodrigo shares her exhilarating new single “bad idea right?” and its accompanying video. The follow-up to “vampire” — a June release that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marked her biggest debut of all time on multiple platforms — “bad idea right?” is the second single from Rodrigo’s forthcoming sophomore album Guts, due out via Geffen Records/Universal Music Canada on September 8. Both “vampire” and “bad idea right?” are available now as instant grat tracks for those who pre-order the album. Listen to “bad idea right?”
In a dramatic shift from the piano-driven intensity of “vampire” — named a “Best New Track” by Pitchfork and currently top 5 at Top 40 radio— “bad idea right?” arrives as a frenetic and wildly fun look at getting back with an ex against all better judgment. Olivia Rodrigo is back with “bad idea right?”, the second single from her forthcoming sophomore album, Guts.
Unlike “vampire,” the first single from Guts (which was named Consequence’s Song of the Week), “bad idea right?” steps away from the more serious side of Rodrigo’s signature post-relationship analysis, and gives her a platform to have a bit of fun. The lyrics consider the pros and cons of hooking up with an ex, asking if it’s a bad idea, but ultimately declaring: “Fuck it, it’s fine.” All this, of course, scored by a rock-pop arrangement, with the kind of head-bopping, anthemic chorus you’d hope for from Rodrigo. “The song is pretty different from ‘vampire’” she told her fans in an email statement, adding that it “shows another side of Guts that’s a little more fun and playful.”

Olivia Rodrigo has unveiled “Vampire,” the eagerly awaited lead single from her second studio album, Guts. Co-written and produced by Dan Nigro, who was at the helm of the singer’s 2021 debut, Sour, the song splits the difference between the dreamy pathos of Rodrigo’s breakout hit, “Drivers License,” and the more angsty, rock-oriented tracks of her first album.
Rodrigo’s affinity for pop music’s past is evident throughout “Vampire.” There’s an almost Beatles-esque thread that runs from the song’s pensive piano-driven intro to its symphonic rock climax. Lyrically, it traces “six months of torture,” as Rodrigo skewers her former lover for gaslighting her. At times the track’s central metaphor feels a little on the nose—“You sunk your teeth into me/Oh, bloodsucker, fame fucker”—but when the latter epithet is replaced with “dream crusher” on the clean version, it actually has more bite.

Olivia Rodrigo has reunited with Petra Collins for the “Brutal” video, the opening track to her album Sour.
As with the “Good 4 U” video Collins directed, “Brutal” is bombastic and packed with glittery teenage angst, as Rodrigo breaks her ankle on pointe shoes (ouch) and sits in a traffic jam à la Cher Horowitz in Clueless. She pouts on Instagram live, stands on top of high school desks, and sings from a dark, closed mall. Sadly, she does not parallel park.

In the first few seconds of her debut album, Sour, Olivia Rodrigo declares, “I want it to be, like, messy!” That shouldn’t be too difficult for a pop star who emerged seemingly out of nowhere in January, a Disney actress whose hit “Drivers License” ignited widespread interest in a love triangle between her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-stars. Rodrigo belted extremely relatable, heart-wrenching lines about doing something you were supposed to do with your partner but are now doing alone — and it gave us a glimpse of her songwriting potential.
