Could Scottish soccer be the next to benefit from Hollywood investment?
In a situation reminiscent of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McEIhenney’s takeover of Welsh soccer side Wrexham, former Netflix international originals chief Erik Barmack looks set to acquire a stake in Motherwell Fc.
A report in the Scottish Daily Mail has named Barmack as the unnamed U.S. investor who is planning to buy into the Scottish team, which plays in the Scottish Premiership alongside the likes of giants Celtic and Rangers.
Reynolds and McElhenney took over Wrexham for about £2M ($2.5M) in February 2021 when the club was playing outside the professional English leagues, but have led a transformation by investing heavily and marketing the team internationally through FX doc series Welcome to Wrexham. Wrexham currently sits third in League Two, three below the Premier League, and Motherwell fans will be hoping Barmack can lead their club to similar new glories.

Last year, actress Penélope Cruz set up a joint production venture, Moonlyon, with Madrid-based The Mediapro Studio at the urging of its CEO, Laura Fernández Espeso, a rising star in Spain’s fast-expanding media sector.
“It’s been an amazing connection from the first,” Cruz says, about her working relationship with Fernández Espeso, Variety’s International Media Woman of the Year.
It was no surprise to anyone that Cruz chose Fernández Espeso as her partner: Lifting up female talent in Western Europe and beyond has been a huge part of Fernández Espeso’s mission since she took the reins of the busy production studio five years ago. At her direction, the company, which has 30 production houses, has capitalized on the growing demand for TV series that can travel across the world. Fernández Espeso has steered the effort for the company to make its productions more saleable by lensing in English.

Barcelona-based Grup Mediapro has promoted Laura Fernández Espeso to the post of general manager with oversight over not just The Mediapro Studio, where she currently serves as CEO, but the whole of the Group. The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2025.
As Grup Mediapro’s No. 2, reporting to Mediapro co-founder Tatxo Benet, Group Media President and CEO, Fernández Espeso will oversee a company now streamlined in five business units, two new, focused on the Group’s principle revenue drivers.

“If you look at the history of Hollywood, 50%, 60%, maybe 70% of the stories are based on books or IP or games. There’s a big gap between how Europe thinks about developing television and the Hollywood system,” producer Erik Barmack reflected a few months back.
“There’s just tremendous opportunities now as the market’s tightening to find source IP where, you know, there’s an installed audience,” he added.
Now Europe and indeed Latin America is catching up. In one of its biggest innovations of 2023, Ventana Sur has launched a Buenos Aires version of Shoot the Book! offering IPs from a clutch of Argentina’s highest rated novelists and a best-selling French author, as one star attraction of its multitudinous titled El Principio del Film.

The cancelations continue ahead of the holiday weekend.
Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.
The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.
They are the latest cancelations at the streamer over the last few months following shows such as The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, which had both been renewed before those decisions were reversed.

L.A.-based Wild Sheep Content, headed by former Netflix international honcho Erik Barmack, is adapting German No.1 bestseller “When Butterflies Fly Loops” for Mexico, as it branches out into unscripted with Adal Ramones, Mexico’s No.1 standup, and boards Lucía Puenzo’s gangster epic, “The Gunwoman (Pepita’s Legend).”
Starring Luisana Lopilato, and just announced, “Gunwoman” reps a “giant story” account, said Puenzo, of real life mobster Margarita Di Tulio, which is backed by a far-ranging consortium of good and great players in and outside Argentina.
All three titles see Wild Sheep driving ever deeper into big IP in highly packaged and star-laden projects, while branching out in sectors and territorial reach – strategies which may well become text-book tactics as streamers and broadcasters pull back on commissions or buys over much of international.

“The Head,” The Mediapro Studio’s biggest hit, is advancing towards a third season, Ran Tellem, Tms head of international content development, confirmed Tuesday at Iberseries & Industria Platino.
“‘The Head’ started out something like four years ago as a limited series only for six episodes and now it’s going into third season, so you might say we never lived up to our promises,” Tellem joked on stage at an early Iberseries panel, entitled Creative Content Strategies, where he shared the stage with former Netflix international head Erik Barmack, now at L.A.-based Wild Sheep Content.
Season 3 has yet to receive a production greenlight. The Mediapro Studio aims to produce ‘The Head,’ Season 3 out of Spain. Beyond that, Tellem gave few details. Currently in development, the series is being written by writers from four countries in three different continents.

Cannes — Belinda, one of Mexico’s biggest popstars and a star of Netflix hit “Welcome to Eden,” is attached to headline “The Red Diamond,” the latest project from Erik Barmack’s L.A. and Mexico City-based Wild Sheep Content.
One of the fastest-growing of production companies in international markets, Wild Sheep has a production alliance with The Mediapro Studio.
“The Red Diamond” is also set up at Mexico City’s Wild Sheep Content Latin America, headed by producer Jimena Rodríguez who produced “3 Idiots,” the second highest-grossing Mexican movie of 2017. Rodríguez was instrumental in helping bringing Belinda to the project.
A six-part series, “The Red Diamond” ticks multiple boxes which are keys to success in the current international TV scene.
It adapts hot IP: the same-title book series, described by Barmack as “a popular, sexy action thriller,” from Angy Skay, one of Spain’s most popular romance novelists.

In April 2018, Netflix announced that Spanish heist thriller “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”) had become the U.S. streaming service’s most-watched non-English series ever.
With a Spanish series crowned as the first foreign-language blockbuster at the company that has transformed entertainment worldwide, Spain’s expansion — long nurtured by hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel” and “Locked Up” — well and truly lifted off.
Building on that success, in March 2021, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez unveiled the Avs Hub Plan, which would invest €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) into Spain’s audiovisual sector.
For a country in which the word españolada was used to write off supposed second-rate homegrown fare, the re-positioning of Spain’s film and TV industries as core drivers in its digital post-pandemic “reindustrialization” is little short of a revolution. Spain, Cannes Marché du Film’s 2023 country of honor, now accounts for seven of the 20 entries in...

Madrid, Spain — Industry prizes will be announced on Friday, Festival awards one day later. Yet even by Thursday evening, as this year’s Malaga Festival’s Mafiz-Spanish Screenings headed into its home straits, Spain film and TV industry was sending strong signs of their consolidation as an international market power.
That cut multiple ways. Following, 10 provisional takes on this year’s event:
The Biggest Malaga Ever, By a Head
Final attendance has blasted past last year’s 1,600, in itself a massive hike on years prior, tracking by Thursday at 1,700 attendees from 61 countries at Mafiz, Malaga’s industry arm. The Spanish Screenings alone account for getting on half of those accreditations. “The market’s been very good,” said Vicente Canales at Film Factory. “There’s been enough buyers, spending more time watching Spanish films. At Berlin and Cannes, they just don’t have the time. And Screenings attendance has been high.

After Madrid’s Iberseries and Mipcom in Cannes, who on earth would want to make another long trek to a third TV forum in less than two months?
Well, rather a lot of people. Two weeks out from 2022’s MipCancun, which runs Nov. 13-16, its organization confirmed an over 800 delegate attendance, which marks a return to pre-pandemic levels. Why is another matter. 10 takes on this year’s edition:
MipCancun’s Boom
Reasons for the attendance rebound cut several ways. “Europe and Latin America are no longer aligned. While Europe’s outlook is quite gloomy when it comes to developing scripted series with platforms, the boom in Latin America is still going on,” said Caroline Servy, The Wit managing director who will present at MipCancun overviews of both scripted and non-scripted trends across Spanish-speaking markets. “Our business is still thriving, especially in Brazil and Mexico, which are huge markets,” added Manuel Marti,...

Erik Barmack, the former senior Netflix exec, and Mexico-based producer Jimena Rodríguez have added two new Spanish crime novels – “El Susurro del Angel” and “Pequeñas Infamias” – to their burgeoning line in star-studded, character-driven crime thrillers begun by Netflix Mexico original “Invitation to Murder.”
Shot this Summer in Mexico, “Invitation to Murder,” adapting a Carmen Posadas novel and the first title in the crime thriller movie series, starred Peru’s Stephanie Cayo (“Club of Crows”), Spain’s Maribel Verdú (“Pan’s Labyrinth”), Colombia’s Manolo Cardona (“Who Killed Sara?”), and Mexico’s Regina Blandón (“Yo No Creo en Los Hombres”) and Aaron Díaz (“Toda la Sangre”) in a murder mystery reminiscent of “Knives Out,” Barmack said.
Marking out the most original facet of these new movies, “Murder,” “Susurro” and “Pequeñas Indiscreciones” – as the movie makeover is known – will, like “Invitation,” be made for global audiences by adapting high-profile Spanish literary IPs to Mexican settings.

Rome’s innovative Mia market dedicated to international TV series, feature films, and documentaries kicks off its eighth edition Tuesday, headed by new chief Gaia Tridente, who has added an animation section and been busy raising the curated mart’s international profile.
The Oct. 11-15 Mia mart – its acronym stands for the Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo or International Audiovisual Market – this year is positioned prior to the Mipcom content market and conference that runs Oct. 17-20 in Cannes, since Mipcom has shifted its dates back.
But this non-voluntary repositioning has not impacted the number of registered Mia attendees, which is up more than 12 compared with past editions. More than 900 international industry execs are registered for the boutique event being held in central Rome’s Palazzo Barberini, which is Italy’s National Ancient Art gallery that during Mia doubles as the market’s hub where company stands are set up amid Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces.

The Mediapro Studio Distribution has confirmed a flurry of new sales deals on “The Head,” “Paraíso,” “Express” and “Hunting Ana Bravo” and state-of-play roll-out on the first two titles which underscores a still bullish demand for high-end titles sold on the open market at events such as last week’s MipTV.

Billed by Barmack as “‘The Fast and the Furious’ meets ‘Money Heist’” – which he helped bring to Netflix – “The Chase” marks the first movie out of the gate at Munz’s Berlin-based new label, Fright Zone, the first production company in Germany that will focus exclusively on developing and producing fantasy, action, horror and science fiction films as well as TV shows in and from Germany.
Overseen by founder and CEO Munz, Fright Zone will produce with Barmack, who is now working out of his own L.A. label, Wild Sheep Content, a company that he started with The Mediapro Studio, headed by Laura Fernández Espeso.

Erik Barmack, the former Netflix VP of international originals who brought “Money Heist” to the streamer, has boarded Tianna Johnson’s London-set fantasy drama ‘Obeah,’ which topped the Brit List 2021 of un-produced screenplays.
The move sees Barmack, now working out of his own L.A. label Wild Sheep Content, a company which he started with The Mediapro Studio, coming on board to develop and produce “Obeah” with Johnson.
The Brit List is based on recommendations by the British film and TV industry, ranging from its producers to talent agencies, sales companies, financiers, distributors and broadcasters.
Described by Barmack as “‘The Sixth Sense’ meets a crime series” and the best script I read last year,” “Obeah” is set largely in present-day North-West London but draws inspiration from indigenous spiritual practices in the Caribbean.
When the bodies of young people start showing up across the country, an angsty woman finds herself on...

Entering into a post-“Money Heist” phase, the Spanish TV fiction industry is immersed in international growth strategies as it promotes at home new and original voices that create TV stories with universal appeal.
Key production-distribution TV companies such as The Mediapro Studio, Onza Entertainment, Secuoya Studios and Buendía Estudios are building beachheads in the Americas to strengthen the standout place in the sun of the global TV drama business that the Spanish TV industry already occupies.
As by far the biggest part of a 600 million people Spanish-speaking community around the globe, Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic represent the most obvious market for growth.
However, a common ambition for Spanish companies eyeing the Americas is to develop projects in the region but aimed at the global market, which are also increasingly based on IP. And the most natural formula is to bet on international co-productions, which allow projects...

One of the largest corporate presences at this year’s MipCancun, Spain’s Mediapro, for decades now a sports broker, services provider and producer of auteur films, from Woody Allen and Roman Polanski to Spain’s Isabel Coixet and Fernando León de Aranoa, has made a pair of high-profile executive moves within its flagship The Mediapro Studio production unit, naming Eugeni Sallent as the company’s new head of Latin America and Carolina Bilbao as VP of content and business development for the U.S.
Both appointments are representative of an ongoing push among many European “super indies” to grow their current operations on the other side of the Atlantic, a phenomenon manifesting itself in the open at this year’s MipCancun, where speakers from Gaumont, Banijay, Endemol Shine Boomdog, The Mediapro Studio, Rt and Turkey’s Intermedya will all participate.

It’s “Squid Game’s” world, and we’re just living in it.
That was one takeaway from a wide-ranging conversation held during Rome’s Mia Market on Saturday, as top independent producers met to assess the state of international drama and explore how hit series like Netflix’s Korean phenomenon are rewriting the rules of the game.
From heated competition between new and established streaming platforms to increasingly complicated rights deals to skyrocketing demand for non-English-language content, it’s a landscape that looks unrecognizable from even just a few years ago. Yet that’s opened the door for innovation – and more opportunities than ever before.
“The industry is ripe for disruption,” said Erik Barmack, CEO and founder of Wild Sheep Content. “I do think the room for independent producers is only going to grow.”

Btf Media and Madrid-based IP management company TheMadMediaCo announced on Tuesday, as Iberseries Platino Industria geared up in Madrid, that they are teaming to co-develop and co-produce Argentine true crime non-fiction novel “Magnetized” (“Magnetizado”).
In an instance which shows how IP deals are scaling up, the adaptation will be made across a range of media, formats and markets. First up is a podcast, to be followed shortly by a TV fiction series and docuseries.
The final book published by Busqued after a short but brilliant career before he died of a heart attack on March 29, “Magnetized” is hailed as one of the most original, chilling and unclassifiable of Latin America non-fiction novels.
That comes with the material and Busqued’s treatment of it. “Magnetized” is based on Busqued’s 90 hours of recorded conversation with psychiatric ward inmate Ricardo Melogno decades after Melogno, then a 20-year-old, killed four taxi drivers in...
