“Twisters” executive producer Steven Spielberg didn’t want Anthony Ramos to use a Southern accent for his role, according to the actor.
Ramos, who plays storm chaser Javi in “Twisters,” said in an Entertainment Weekly interview that he thought his character would have a Southern accent.
“Then I heard Steven [Spielberg] was like, ‘No, I want him to do it in his dialect,'” Ramos recalled. “It was a little surprising to me, but it was really cool, to me, because I’ve never heard someone who speaks in my vernacular — especially this New York, Northeast, Latino dialect that I have — in a movie of this size, in a place like Oklahoma. It makes me feel it’s possible for a kid from the hood to go to a school like Ou, study meteorology, be this brilliant meteorologist and storm chaser. This is something that a kid like me could do.

Being from the Midwest myself (and even facing tornado warnings in the past few weeks), it seems that the severe storms will be hitting no matter what as the spiritual sequel to Twister touches down in theaters this July. This year has seen some crazy tornadic activity for states like Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. However, Lee Issac Chung’s Twisters is taking them to a whole new level. Universal Pictures has just released the new three-minute trailer for the summer thrill ride, looking to outdo any of the cyclones that Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt encountered in the 1996 original. This time Daisy Edgar-Jones partners up with the “Tornado Wrangler,” played by Glen Powell.
The official synopsis reads, “Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City.

It's been 28 years since Jan De Bont's "Twister" ripped through theaters and whipped up a $496 million worldwide gross. In the meantime, it's become a weekend cable mainstay, where viewers can tune out its wafer-thin plot and simply enjoy the foul weather spectacle. It's far from a classic, but its visual prowess is undeniable, and its colorful cast of storm chasers led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt seem to be having a ball. Any film that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jami Gertz, Todd Field, and Lois Smith is bound to be fun on some level.
So why has it taken so long for Universal to make a sequel to the second-highest-grossing film (domestically) of 1996?
"Twisters" didn't exactly have a stormy development process, but it did go through a couple of iterations over the last four years. Joseph Kosinski was attached to direct in early 2020. When that fell through,...

Exclusive: The ancient Scottish town of St Andrews was hit with a heavy bout of Spidey fever this past weekend as the third annual Sands International Film Festival opened, pulling in an eclectic set of films, filmmakers, and speakers alongside one popular guest of honor.
Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, also known for The Impossible, Cherry, and The Devil All the Time passed through the fest, which opened with a screening of Last Call, a short project he leads with Lindsay Duncan (Blackbird) that was co-written and directed by his brother, Harry Holland. The Holland brothers also took part in the first annual Sands golf tournament, which will continue as part of the festival’s wider activities. It was on the pristine golfing greens where Tom linked up with Deadline to discuss his career so far and plans for future projects, including whether he will return for a fourth Spider-Man movie.

Barry Keoghan is showing off his script tattoos for Andrea Arnold’s highly-anticipated “Bird.”
The “Saltburn” actor and “Banshees of Inisherin” Oscar nominee plays a character named Bug in the feature that has very little details shared as of yet. “Passages” star Franz Rogowski is cast as Bird, with Nykiya Adams, Jason Buda, Jasmine Jobson, Joanne Matthews, James Nelson-Joyce, Rhys Yates, and Sarah Beth Harber.
While plot details remain under wraps, it is known that Keoghan exited Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2” to film “Bird” instead. The feature will be premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in competition alongside Sean Baker’s “Anora,” David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds,” Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.”
“Bird” is director Arnold’s return to narrative filmmaking since her 2016 Cannes release “American Honey” starring Shia Labeouf and Sasha Lane.
“Bird” was picked up by Cornerstone Films.

Twisters might be all tornadoes wrecking the Earth, but at the heart of it is a good banter romance, and that’s what Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell have got going on in the latest trailer shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.
That gal-guy back and forth was what was also at the heart of the original 1996 Twister movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.
“You think you can interrupt a tornado,” Powell’s cowboy tornado chaser asks Edgar-Jones’ city girl.
“In theory,” she answers, “in the field and in the moment, I got it wrong. We never had a chance.”
“You want one?” Powell asks, giving her an invitation for a good time.

Director Lee Isaac Chung introduced the footage today during Universal’s presentation at Caesars Colosseum for what he said was his first CinemaCon.

Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes. Twisters got some major love during Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon, with the audience getting to see an extended preview of the movie.
The extended preview starts off at a rodeo, which is disrupted by a giant tornado as bulls and horses run wild amidst the chaos. We see scenes of Powell’s character as assembles a group of storm chasers as two tornados combine to form a super tornado. “It’s alright to be scared… fear is the reason you do it,” Powell’s character says. “You don’t face your fears, you ride them.” Our own Chris Bumbray said that the new footage looks huge with tons of stuff happening, but he added that it looks...

It's been nearly 30 years since tornadoes took the box office by storm with the arrival of the thrilling summer blockbuster "Twister," starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as a pair of estranged ex-lovers who also happen to be passionate storm chasers. Now, Universal Pictures is stirring the storms up yet again with "Twisters."
Though early reports indicated that "Twisters" would follow the daughter of Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's characters, it appears the movie is a stand-alone sequel without any characters from the original movie returning. Instead, this is a new chapter following Daisy Edgar-Jones ("Where the Crawdads Sing"), Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick"), Anthony Ramos ("In the Heights"), and Sasha Lane ("Loki"), in an original story that promises to bring the high-speed suspense of "Twister" back to theaters.

There are plenty of ways to describe what happened at Caesars Palace on Wednesday when Universal Pictures delivered Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters to the Colosseum stage. Some examples: The film whipped up a frenzy; exclusive footage spun through Sin City; action scenes blew away theater owners, etc., etc.
All of the above work as Universal debuted never-before-seen scenes of the summer release courtesy of Chung and his castmembers Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, who turned up for an extended introduction.
Chung was first to walk out — an appearance that marked his first time at CinemaCon — and the director said that many in the audience might be wondering why he decided to jump into summer blockbuster tentpole territory after carving out a career in independent film. “I’ve been fascinated by tornadoes all my life,” he said, adding that he grew up in Arkansas, where tornadoes were just a way of life.

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones have somehow found a way to make relentless natural destruction sexy.
The leads of “Twisters,” along with costar Anthony Ramos, showed up onstage at the annual movie theater owners gathering CinemaCon to offer a first look at the sequel to the 1996 adventure film “Twister,” which starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
The chemistry between the “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Normal People” stars was palpable. The exhibitors ate up Powell as a cocky “tornado wrangler” fond of strutting in wet t-shirts and pushing an absurdly tricked-out pickup truck. The actors were also open about their intense filming conditions, saying they shot in 120-degree heat, got hit with a jet engine, smothered with hay, had a water tank dumped on them, got pelted by ice, were covered in trash and dragged by wires.

The disaster film Twister (watch it Here) was a massive success for Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment when it was released during the summer movie season in 1996. Made on a budget of $90 million, it earned almost $500 million at the global box office and ranked as the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. Quickly cashing in with a sequel would have made a lot of sense. But while there were rumors – including a memorable one that said the sequel would involve a tornado hitting a major city – a follow-up never made it into production. Until now. Universal and Amblin are reviving the Twister IP with a film called Twisters, which is set to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024. Twenty-eight years later, will it be able to replicate or surpass the success of its predecessor? We’ll have to wait and see. But for know, we’re going to...

This summer, the epic studio disaster movie returns with the adrenaline-pumping, seat-gripping, big-screen thrill ride Twisters, a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster Twister, that puts you in direct contact with one of nature’s most wondrous—and destructive—forces from the producers of the Jurassic, Bourne and Indiana Jones series.

Filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung broke out with 2020’s “Minari,” which landed multiple Oscar nominations including two for Chung (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay) and Best Picture. (The film won an Oscar for Yuh-Jung Youn in Best Supporting Actress.) Now, four years later, Chung is back and with an expected follow-up: “Twisters,” a sequel to 1996’s blockbuster hit “Twister.”
Universal debuted the first trailer for “Twisters” during Sunday’s Super Bowl, and the spot immediately spiked online interest in Chung’s first studio picture thanks to the way the spot teases the film’s massive set pieces and star appeal courtesy of Glen Powell. The actor, who helped “Anyone But You” become a sleeper hit and pops off the screen in Netflix’s “Hit Man” (out June 7), plays a storm chaser named Tyler Owens who helps “Twisters” protagonist Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) regain her mojo after a tragedy. All anybody wants to talk about these days is flooding, winter vortexes, and other natural disasters stemming from the ongoing climate crisis. Well, apparently, the tornado from "Twister" got wind of this (I'm sorry) and is back with a vengeance in the newly unveiled Super Bowl trailer for "Twisters."
Neither a direct follow-up to director Jan de Bont's 1996 natural disaster thriller nor a complete reboot of the franchise, "Twisters" follows a new team of storm chasers as they battle destructive cyclones in the present day. Apparently, at one point, "Twister" star Helen Hunt and "Blindspotting" co-writers/co-stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal pitched a proper legacy sequel that, according to Hunt, would've focused on "all Black and Brown storm chasers." However, the studio powers that be didn't go for it for "potentially shady" reasons, as Diggs told Business Insider last year.

Super Bowl Lviii on Sunday night out of Las Vegas brought more than just excitement for 49ers and Chiefs fans: Universal Pictures debuted the first footage from Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” during the big game. Check it out below.
The Golden Globe-winning director’s first film since “Minari” serves as a follow-up to Jan de Bont’s 1996 original blockbuster about storm chasers in Oklahoma, led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. “Twisters” is written by Mark L. Smith, the scribe behind “The Revenant” (with Alejandro G. Iñárritu) and director George Clooney’s Netflix sci-fi “The Midnight Sky.” Chung’s film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, with Universal releasing the picture on July 19, 2024 in the United States.
Plans for a “Twisters” follow-up have been in the works for half a decade, with Helen Hunt pitching a sequel about a diverse set of storm chasers that she said the studio rejected.

“Bird,” Andrea Arnold’s first narrative feature in almost a decade, has been picked up by Cornerstone Films with the company set to launch the feature at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.
Little is known about the film, except that it was shot in the U.K. around the Kent area last summer and, like much of Arnold’s work, examines life on the fringes of society. It also stars two of the buzziest actors on the circuit: Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski.
Keoghan is currently on a phenomenal run that began with his BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated supporting role in “The Banshees of Inisherin” and has continued with a BAFTA-nominated lead turn in Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” as well as a major part in the recently launched Apple TV+ drama “Masters of the Air.” He reportedly joined “Bird” after leaving the cast of Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel,...

Glen Powell has revealed in an interview with Vogue that a new Twister film is coming. It’s not a sequel and not a reboot of the 1996 film starring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
1996’s Twister earned more than $494 million at the global box office.
“We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one,” Powell said. “It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern day.”
Filming wrapped “a couple of nights ago,” he added. “I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me,’ ” he said.
Powell said the general theme of the new Twister film will appeal to audiences.

Twenty-seven years after the release of the blockbuster disaster film Twister (watch it Here), Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have finally put a follow-up on the fast track to release – but they’re not calling it a sequel. Scheduled to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024, Twisters has been described as a “new chapter” in what is about to become a franchise… and during an interview with Vogue, cast member Glen Powell – who can currently be seen on the big screen in the romantic comedy Anyone but You – confirmed that the film tells a standalone story. But even without any connection to the original film, he believes that it’s something that will be able to connect to everyone around the world.
Powell told Vogue (with thanks to Deadline for sharing the text) that Twisters is “definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one.

Glen Powell is preparing his Broadway debut and is working with producer Ryan Murphy to make it happen.
The Anyone but You star is reuniting with the Scream Queens co-creator, the horror series in which he starred back in 2015, playing the role of Chad Radwell.

When asked if the Broadway musical had anything to do with his character in the 2015 series, Powell said, “The Chad Radwell Musical. That’s the funniest idea. Just the Dickie Dollar Scholars. [This story includes major spoilers from The Crowded Room finale, “Judgment.”]
Tom Holland began a story on The Crowded Room that came to a shocking — albeit, satisfying — conclusion with the AppleTV+ series’ finale.
When the 10-episode limited series first introduced audiences to Holland’s Danny Sullivan, some knew his story would be loosely based on the real-life experiences of Billy Milligan, the first person diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder and the first to be acquitted of a major crime due to his condition.
Those who didn’t know the basis for the long-gestating series (The Crowded Room, inspired by the 1981 nonfiction novel The Minds of Billy Milligan, has circled around Hollywood since the 1990s) were faced with major reveals in almost every episode of the second half of the season, starting with the fact that most of the people Danny had been interacting with throughout the show (Sasha Lane, Lior Raz, Sam Vartholomeos, Jason Isaacs and...

Note: The following interview was conducted prior to SAG-AFTRA joining the WGA on strike.
“The Crowded Room” has come and gone, marking a huge shift for series star Tom Holland. And with it came the daunting task of playing multiple characters — but also sharing those characters with other actors. Fortunately, they worked out a system.
The whole truth of Danny Sullivan’s (Holland) life was officially revealed in Episode 7 of “The Crowded Room,” explaining exactly what Jack (Jason Isaacs) meant in Episode 6 when he mentioned “us.” It turns out, most of the characters we’d met up to that point were all Danny’s alters, each taking turns driving his life when they felt he needed them most.

“The Crowded Room” has come and gone, marking a huge shift for series star Tom Holland. And with it came the daunting task of playing multiple characters — but also sharing those characters with other actors. Fortunately, they worked out a system.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Crowded Room Season 1, Episode 8, “Reunion.”] As The Crowded Room approaches the back half of its season, the actions of Danny’s (Tom Holland) alters are starting to cross paths with him, particularly in the latest episode, “Reunion.” Preparing for his trial, Danny finds himself being visited not by psychologist Rya (Amanda Seyfried) but by Ariana’s (Sasha Lane) love, Jerome (Elijah Jones). Viewers will recall that it was recently revealed that most individuals from Danny’s life are actually alters that his mind has forged as a way to protect himself. (Credit: Apple TV+) We got a taste of Ariana and Jerome’s relationship in an episode earlier this season, but understanding the reality of it was something different as Jerome visited Danny in jail. It’s here that Danny and Jerome come to terms that there’s a whole personality standing ...

While Danny Sullivan’s (Tom Holland) underlying traumas have been simmering under the surface, the dam breaks in the aptly titled “The Crowded Room,” revealing that many of the people filling his life are, in fact, alters in his mind. That’s right: Ariana (Sasha Lane), Yitzak (Lior Raz), Jonny (Levon Hawke), Mike (Sam Vartholomes), and Jack (Jason Isaacs) are all different personalities that Danny inhabits as someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder, referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder in the show. (Credit: Apple TV+) And Rya isn’t merely an investigator trying to uncover the truth behind a shooting Danny committed; rather, she’s actually a psychologist eager to determine the young man’s diagnosis. “There’s a...

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from “The Crowded Room.”
Over 20 years ago, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman penned the script for “A Beautiful Mind,” the Oscar-winning biopic of mathematician and diagnosed schizophrenic John Nash. To convey Nash’s subjective experience of his condition, “A Beautiful Mind” pulled a bait-and-switch. Early in the film, we meet Nash’s college roommate, who becomes his lifelong friend; later, it’s revealed the roommate was a figment of Nash’s imagination. At the time, the twist was effective enough to earn Goldsman an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The limited series “The Crowded Room,” created by Goldsman for Apple TV+, attempts the same trick to greatly diminished returns. A simple Wikipedia search shows that “The Crowded Room” was inspired by Billy Milligan, the first defendant acquitted by invoking a case of dissociative identity disorder in the late 1970s. But ahead of the show’s release,...

What restricts and ultimately fells “The Crowded Room” isn’t just one poor decision. Far too long and visually repetitive, the 10-episode limited series starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried doesn’t have the dramatic heft needed to justify its length, nor is its narrative crafted carefully enough to build proper momentum. Holland’s lead performance is solid, though irreparably hampered by the story’s structure, and Seyfried’s is a tad sharper, though that could be because she’s able to do more with less. Its message — which I can’t even get into for reasons I’ll divulge shortly — is significant and stirring, which makes you wish how it’s conveyed was that much stronger.
But there is a key creative decision that connects all these hang-ups; a choice so frustrating before it’s understood and exasperating once it’s explained that you can’t help but wish...
