Biotech genius Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) is behind bars in the first teaser for Unstable Season 2 — well, sort of. He’s training for his seemingly inevitable imprisonment — you know, after the explosive ending of Season 1.
Created by Lowe, his son John Owen Lowe, and Victor Fresco, Unstable follows eccentric entrepreneur Ellis as he reconnects with his estranged son, Jackson (John Owen Lowe), who moves back home to help pull his father out of an emotional freefall. At the end of , a last-minute technological breakthrough saw Ellis narrowly avoid being removed from the board of his own company. Instead, he ousted his friend turned rival, Jean (Christina Chang)... and then blew up her car.
He’ll have to face the music this summer when the series returns for Season 2.

At the event, held at Los Angeles’ Sunset Las Palmas Studios, Dern — who narrates and produced Common Ground, which follows the pioneers of the regenerative farming movement and the ways it may save the planet — began her speech by shouting out her collaborators on the film. She also praised her longtime publicist Annett Wolf and those who “walk the walk” like environmental icon Ed Begley Jr.

“Law & Order” fans, you have Rob Lowe to thank for the entire franchise. As does Dick Wolf’s bank account. At least, Lowe says this, with his tongue a bit in cheek (but also with some accuracy). As the star of Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” and Netflix’s “Unstable” recently told Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Lowe starred in Wolf’s 1988 feature flop “Masquerade.” It was just the kind of movie disappointment that would have sent Wolf back to TV — and two years later, “Law & Order” premiered. “I remember him saying to me how frustrated he was in the movie business, that he was going to write a pilot,” Lowe said. “And he wrote ‘Law and Order.’ And the rest is history. You’re welcome. Yeah, I’m happy to provide the bomb that powers your rise to dominance.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge may have been the star of her seminal comedy series “Fleabag” but Sian Clifford, who played Fleabag’s semi-unstable sister, Claire, proved herself an equally gifted comedic performer. Clifford has since put that status to good use in “Quiz,” “Inside No. 9,” and “See How They Run.” Now, she stars opposite Rob and John Owen Lowe in Netflix’s “Unstable.”
“Unstable,” reportedly inspired by John Owen’s trolling of his father Rob, follows the former as a son forced to work for the biological research company that his father, the latter, runs. However, the father, grieving from the recent death of his wife of 30 years, has become eccentric and erratic and is more focused on activities such as sunbathing naked in his office rather than running Dragon, his company. Clifford plays Anna, the CFO of Dragon, and she tries her hardest to protect her boss from other employees and himself.

“It’s a unique look at this relatable relationship,” reveals John Owen Lowe about “Unstable” in our recent webchat. He continues, “A parent is always going to irritate their child and give them a hard time. It just so happens that I grew up with a parent who was in the public eye, so no-one ever agreed with me when I tried to tell people he was wildly irritating. There was something very funny about the dichotomy of that. We wanted to make a show about it, so people could laugh, relate and also go, ‘this situation is a little bit funky, isn’t it?’” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

There were six scripts finished out of a planned eight-episode run with principal photography planned for later this spring. Employees were told earlier this week that production was being suspended and that they were being laid off at the end of the week.

We hear that the series, which hadn’t received a full, official renewal greenlight, was prepping at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood. There were six scripts finished out of a planned eight-episode run with principal photography planned for later this spring. Employees were told earlier this week that production was being suspended and that they were being laid off at the end of the week.

“This show has bags of energy,” proclaims Sian Clifford about “Unstable” in our recent webchat. She continues, “It’s unapologetically a comedy. I don’t feel there’s a lot of that around at the moment. Comedy’s been going in this different direction the past few years. That was another thing that drew me to it. You really get to take risks you can’t when it’s a dramedy. It felt quite liberating because the energy is effusive and very effervescence. The palate of the show is very colorful. It feels full of life. That’s the energy I tried to bring to it and felt making it.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Rob Lowe and his 28-year-old son, John Owen Lowe, got downright serious — and a bit emotional — during their latest appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show”.
The father-son comedic duo had a lot banter during Thursday’s show, trading barbs and zinging each other. But the conversation turned serious, after Barrymore opened up about her sobriety journey and sharing that her family supports “me through my pitfalls.”
She then commended Rob and John Owen for supporting “each other through every high and low.”
Rob chimed in and talked about being in recovery for 33 years now. After the crowd clapped, Rob then shared Johnny’s “got five years.”
At that point, Rob reached into his pocket and surprised John Owen with his five-year sobriety chip.
“In fact, Johnny’s five-year birthday was on Saturday,” Rob said. “And Johnny, I want to give you your five-year chip. I love you. I’m proud of you.

Peyton List, who first made a name for herself in as a Disney up-and-comer in “Jessie” and “Bunk’d,” is veering into darker territory in Paramount+’s “School Spirits” — a move the actress has been seeking since she first entered the industry.
“I wanted to do Disney so badly, but also … I was auditioning for more movies and shows and all kinds of different projects that were darker as a kid,” List told TheWrap, adding that she wanted to explore more complex themes before being cast in a Disney show. “I want to be able to play different characters and show more humanity.”
Now, as List plays Maddie in the Paramount+ high school drama with a ghoulish twist, List says the nuanced role feels “natural” to her, noting that Maddie feels less like performing a character and more like a “real person.”

John Owen Lowe, Rob Lowe’s son and star of Netflix’s “Unstable,” is weighing in the nepo baby discourse, calling it a “very important conversation.”
“I do think that it should be acknowledged, and privilege is inherent in the entertainment industry as it is in many other ones too, and it is just in life in general,” John Owen told TheWrap.
Lowe, who began his career as a writer on “9-1-1: Lone Star,” which stars his father, also urges those who might be benefitting from their family’s stature to acknowledge their inherent privilege for their the sake of their own development.
“I think those that have it need to be at the very least aware of that, in order to have a semblance of groundedness, or a healthy take on reality,” Lowe, 28, said. “For people that come from a similar position as I do, I would just really hope that they have gratitude,...

“Unstable” follows the once-estranged relationship between eccentric biotech entrepreneur Ellis Dragon and his introverted son, Jackson, played by real-life father-son duo Rob and John Owen Lowe. As Jackson struggles to find his footing in a world centered around his beloved and well-known father, the Netflix series depicts a dynamic that is all too familiar to John Owen’s real life.
“It’s wildly similar to [me and my dad’s] dynamic,” John Owen told TheWrap. “The irony is not lost on me that we’re literally acting in a show together about a son who wants to escape his dad’s shadow as I’m attempting to escape my own father’s shadow, and going even deeper into it.”
The comedy series, which debuts Thursday (March 30) on Netflix, centers on Jackson’s return home to his father following the loss of his mother and Ellis’ wife, a tragedy that stunted the pair’s relationship. Jackson...

The first thing you need to know about Rob Lowe‘s new comedy Unstable, now streaming on Netflix, is that he plays a character named Ellis Dragon. That’s right — first name Ellis, last name Dragon.
Created by Lowe, his son John Owen Lowe and Victor Fresco, Unstable centers around a beautiful narcissist — the insanely named Ellis Dragon — whose bio-tech company begin to suffer as he spirals (downward, of course) following the tragic passing of his wife.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for all of Unstable Season 1.] Anna’s (Sian Clifford) hope at the end of Unstable Season 1? A few days without any drama. Oh, if she only knew what Ellis (Rob Lowe) was up to when he was Mia from the emergency board meeting that almost led to him losing his job. As the Season 1 finale (now streaming on Netflix) begins, Anna’s heard about that meeting, and since it’s news to her and Ellis, they correctly deduce that someone’s coming for him. But if he can show the board by then that he has made actual, solid concrete, perhaps he can save his job. Anna enlists Jackson (John Owen Lowe) to see if he can buy his dad more time by asking Jean (Christina Chang) to postpone the meeting. But when he goes to see her, he finds Leslie (Fred Armisen) there; the therapist confirmed that Ellis kidnapped him, and Jean...

For about 20 seconds at the end of its second episode, Netflix’s Unstable stops trying to be funny. Jackson Dragon (John Owen Lowe) has been coerced into moving back in with his father, biotech entrepreneur Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), and almost despite himself, he’s started using some of his own scientific smarts to help his dad deliver a big project. Jackson has long lived on the other side of the country, trying to work as a professional flutist. He's spent the last year avoiding his grief for his dead mother, but once he's back at home, he can’t ignore those feelings. When he finds a small memento that reminds him of his mom, the sadness comes pouring out. This makes Jackson, and by extension the entire series, feels grounded in something real.

When John Owen Lowe began writing on “9-1-1: Lone Star,” which stars his dad, Rob Lowe, he couldn’t resist venting to members of his team. His complaints about going “stir crazy” were so funny that they told him to pitch it as a show. With that, Netflix’s “Unstable” was born: The sitcom, which premieres March 30, stars the two actors and co-creators as estranged father and son Ellis and Jackson.
The comedy is fictional — but rooted in reality. “Jackson’s estranged from his dad. It never got that bad between my dad and me,” Lowe, 28, says. “[Jackson is] a little more socially awkward and lost than I am. I did experience pockets where I didn’t have an identity, because of what it was like growing up with a father who sort of sucks the air out of every room you’re in with him.”

The conversation about “nepo babies” has grown tiresome — and not just because “nepo baby” itself is such an unattractive turn of phrase. The general outrage over the idea that children of famous actors find themselves drawn to acting, ginned up by an artfully provocative recent cover story in New York magazine, has tended to elide the simple fact that said children often find themselves acting because they share talents with their parents, who are famous for good reason.
So it is with John Owen Lowe, who seems like a slightly altered carbon copy of his father Rob, with the smarm ironed out. Together, they’re headlining “Unstable,” a new Netflix comedy that’s infuriatingly better than it needed to be. Lowes père and fils share executive producer credits with Victor Fresco and Marc Buckland, two creatives with long comedy résumés. And what might have been expected to look like a...

If you were, as I was, a big fan of ABC’s workplace satire Better Off Ted, it may feel slightly surprising at first that Netflix’s Unstable hails from the same creator — Victor Fresco, credited this time alongside stars Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe.
Where Better Off Ted’s Veridian Dynamics stood as a paragon of corporate greed, Unstable’s Dragon is actively doing good for humanity while also making boatloads of money. The biotech firm’s founder and CEO, the improbably but impressively named Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), is no greedy stuffed suit but a charismatic genius entrepreneur who actually lives up to the sort of hype once lavished upon the likes of Elon Musk and Elizabeth Holmes. If Better Off Ted felt prescient in its cynicism toward business, Unstable’s sunny outlook can’t help but feel a little out of touch with the current disillusionment toward Big Tech and billionaires.

Having real-life relatives pair up in movies and TV shows is a strategy as old as motion entertainment itself. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married while starring in the pioneering classic I Love Lucy. Dan and Eugene Levy both won critical acclaim and adulation for their father-son roles in the recently finished Schitt’s Creek. When audiences know that the actors are related in real life, it often feels like it adds an authenticity to the performances that otherwise wouldn’t be present.
Netflix is trying to take advantage of this long-running casting trend by pairing Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe together in a workplace/family dramedy mix that resembles shows like Parks and Recreation. The concept of Unstable is creative and zany on the surface, but does the acting and writing back up the proposed ingenuity of the series?

Rob Lowe has been in the acting game since the 1980s. He got his start on screen in the ABC sitcom "A New Kind of Family" and quickly rose to fame following his role on the show. Rob was grouped in with Hollywood's "Brat Pack" of young actors, which included Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore, and Emilio Estevez, after starring in classic films like "The Outsiders," "St. Elmo's Fire," and "Square Dance."
Rob's career slowed slightly during the 1990s, but understandably so, as he welcomed two sons with wife Sheryl Berkoff: Matthew Edward and John Owen Lowe. After the births of his children, the actor balanced his career with his fatherly duties, and is arguably most known for his roles as Sam Seaborn in "The West Wing," which aired from 1999-2003 and Chris Traeger in the beloved NBC sitcom "Parks and Recreation."

My guest this week is Sian Clifford.
Her delicately balanced, tragi-comic portrayal of the brilliantly deadpan Claire in smash hit series Fleabag both won her a Bafta and allowed her to utter the immortal words, “I look like a pencil” in reference to Claire’s legendary hair mishap. In short, Clifford made an indelible mark on viewers.
Among some of her post-Fleabag roles: starring opposite Matthew Macfadyen in Quiz, as one half of the couple accused of cheating on UK gameshow Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?; playing mother to Thomasin McKenzie’s character in the BBC TV adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s novel Life After Life, and starring with Saoirse Ronan in the film See How They Run.
Clifford’s latest role is in Unstable, a new Netflix comedy series created by and starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, executive produced by Victor Fresco of My Name is Earl fame.

Young Hollywood is ready for Oscars week. On Wednesday night, some of the biggest young stars in the industry celebrated at Vanity Fair and TikTok’s Vanities: A Night for Young Hollywood at Mes Amis.
