In the game of “Survivor,” the goal is to outwit, outplay and outlast the competition, but sometimes real-life troubles get in the way that lead to dramatic medical evacuations. As of this writing, a whopping 19 castaways have been removed due to health emergencies — 18 men and only one woman (Kourtney Moon). Tour our photos above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the “Survivor” medevacs/medical evacuations throughout the show’s run. Which ones were the scariest to watch on TV? Which ones do you remember vividly?
Michael Skupin (Season 2: The Australian Outback)
In episode 6, “Trial by Fire,” Skupin fell face-first into the campfire after taking in too much smoke. With skin hanging from his badly burnt hands, he was flown out of the Outback by helicopter as the show’s first ever medevac.

Over the years, many Survivor castaways have had to be pulled from the game for their safety. Some get injured during challenges, while others’ bodies succumb to the elements. Unfortunately for Neal Gottlieb, he had to join the exclusive group of Survivor medical evacuations during season 32, aka Survivor: Kaôh Rōng — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty.

Survivor Season 32 split the show’s 18 castaways into three tribes — Brains, Brawn, and Beauty. And Neal, as an Ice Cream Entrepreneur, fit right in with the Brains tribe on Survivor: Kaôh Rōng — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty.
Neal quickly connected with Aubry Bracco, and the twosome later found themselves in the middle of Liz Markham and Peter Baggenstos vs. Debbie Wanner and Joe del Campo, which helped them survive their first Tribal Council.

After 43 seasons, Survivor has had plenty of champions that fans believe shouldn’t have won the game. Viewers of the CBS reality competition series have strong opinions, so it’s difficult for everyone to agree on whether or not a Sole Survivor is “worthy” of the title. And unfortunately for the Survivor Season 32 winner, their triumph is one of the most controversial decisions in the show’s history.

As “Survivor: Winners at War,” the 40th season of the landmark reality competition series, continues to heat up we take a look back at all the times players were evacuated from the game for medical reasons in its first 20 years (see above). Though some players removed from the game once later returned to compete again, none of them have ever returned and won. That isn’t to say their evacuations haven’t had a long-lasting impact on the show–both Nick Wilson and Michele Fitzgerald benefited greatly from the removal of players in their path to a win. And now they both have a chance at a second win on “Winners at War.”

A preview of next week’s episode of “Survivor 38: Edge of Extinction” showed that a medical emergency is called when one of the players falls ill during a physical challenge. Fans of the CBS reality TV show often wonder what sorts of health issues and discomforts that the so-called castaways must endure while basically living in the great outdoors on tropical islands with few amenities and sparse rations of food.
Well, Hannah Shapiro (see above), a runner-up on “Survivor 33: Millennials vs. Gen X” that aired in 2016, has spilled the beans on what contestants often physically endure if they want to have a chance of winning the title of “Sole Survivor” and a $1 million prize.
In an article for “Men’s Health” magazine, she writes about the cyclone that destroyed her tribe’s camp and the invasive insects that would crawl into their ears. In the 39 days she played the game,...

The premiere episode of Season 37 of “Survivor” started with a lot of touchy-feely moments and the usual grousing about outsized personalities, thanks to its premise of pitting so-called Davids against Goliaths. But it ended up with an unexpected and rather harrowing twist when Pat Cusack, a member of the David tribe who took charge of building their shelter, was suddenly shown to be moaning in pain and clearly injured in the final moments of the show. He somehow hurt his back when his tribe returned to their camp after they lost the immunity challenge when their boat went through choppy water caused by a rainstorm.

What a ride. "Survivor: Kaôh Rōng," aka Season 32 -- and the second to carry the "Brains, Brawn, and Beauty" theme -- ended last night with a dramatic two hour finale and one-hour reunion show. Who won the $1 million and title of Sole Survivor? Mark the Chicken! Ok, maybe not, but he earned it. He was even there at Final Tribal on Tai Trang's lap.

After 39 brutal days in Cambodia, Survivor: Kaoh Rong has crowned a winner.
Winning this season wasn't easy. There were three medical evacuations – the most in Survivor history.
At the beginning of Wednesday night's episodes, there were four contestants left – and each had a strong argument for why they should win the game.
Aubry Bracco had played an exceptional social game, building bonds with other castaways and keeping herself out of real danger. Tai Trang had formed – and broken – key alliances, propelling himself through the game.
Michele Fitzgerald proved herself to be a good scrambler, talking herself out of trouble.

Blindsided by beef! "Survivor: Kaoh Rong," aka Season 32, is now down to its final four, and that last elimination was arguably the worst. Who wants to be kicked out of the game for eating too much? Joe Del Campo, a 71-year-old former FBI special agent, was evacuated from the game for medical reasons at the final five. His departure marked the third medevac of the season, which is a record for "Survivor."

On last week's Survivor: Kaoh Rong, the Beauty, Brains and Brawn tribes became no more. While new alliances formed and old ones shifted on the beach in some heavy strategy talk, none of it came to fruition after Neal was medically evacuated from the game. Let's hope Kaoh Rong is a little more forgiving this week and allows our Survivors to actually play the game and crack the game wide open at Tribal Council.

"Survivor" has a history of being disgusting -- what with the players eating bugs and such -- but last night's "Survivor: Kaoh Rong," aka Season 32, was particularly hard to watch, and should've come with a "finish your dessert first" warning. It was merge time, which was good news, but toward the end of the episode, Jeff Probst showed up on the beach, which is always bad news. He had the medical crew go through the cast's various injuries, from the scabs inside Tai Trang's thigh to "Mount Saint Neal" on ice cream entrepreneur Neal Gottlieb's knee, and that creepy thing on his back.
Ultimately, Neal was pulled from the game, marking Season 32's second medevac. He was not happy about it, since -- unlike Caleb Reynolds, who was totally out of it when he was pulled from this same season a few weeks ago -- Neal felt fine.

"You can't get cocky in this game, but I'm in control. It would take something extraordinary, off the charts, completely whacked out to disturb my plans now." –Marty Piombo, Survivor: Nicaragua, immediately before losing control
Peter Baggenstos may look like Obama. But to my eyes, he's the Donald Trump of Survivor. Everything he's doing is the absolute best.
Some say Survivor is an infinitely complex game.

The last couple of seasons of Survivor have been pretty consistent in the ratings and that's no easy feat these days. Will this venerable competition series continue to perform for CBS? Will it be renewed for a 33rd season or, will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned.
Jeff Probst returns as host with Survivor: Kaôh Rōng. The "Brains vs Brawn vs Beauty" season splits contestants into three teams based on intelligence, athleticism, and attractiveness. The players are Peter Baggenstos, Aubry Braco, Joseph Del Campo, Michele Fitzgerald, Cydney Gillon, Neal Gottlieb, Darnell Hamilton, Alecia Holden, Kyle Jason, Anna Khait, Jennifer Lanzetti, Nick Maiorano, Elisabeth Markham, Scot Pollard, Caleb Reynolds, Julia Sokolowski, Tai Trang, and Debbie Wanner.
The higher a show's ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better its chances for survival. New ratings data will be added as it becomes available -- typically around 11:30am Est/8:30am...

It happens every season.
A Survivor contestant will make a colossal blunder that costs him the game. As soon as the episode airs, Survivor fans take to social media and tell the contestant what they should have done. Just ask Survivor alum and People blogger Stephen Fishbach; to this day, he still gets messages from Monday morning quarterbacks telling him what he did wrong on both seasons that he played.
But in reality, only the show's 478 contestants truly understand what it takes to play Survivor: the starvation, the elements, the psychological torture.

Where does Survivor find these people?
No, that's not a rhetorical question. We really want to know.
When the long-running reality show returns for its 32nd season, Survivor: Kaoh Rong, on Feb. 17, they've found a new batch of contestants to compete for the $1 million prize. Survivor's strength has always been in its casting, and, by the looks of this crew, they may have done it again.
There's a bounty hunter from Detroit, a Minnesota ER doctor, a semi-retired NBA player and a female bodybuilder from Georgia. There's a 19-year-old student and a 72-year-old(!) former FBI agent from Florida.
