Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.
They hate each other, but as we all know, that’s often a prelude on the road to love both in real and reel life.

Vidor also uses the vocabulary of dance to signal Gilda’s emotional temperature.

The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.

NATO executive board begins search for successor.
John Fithian, the CEO and president of National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) who guided members through a conveyor belt of existential threats to the exhibition sector, will retire as the top US cinema lobbyist on May 1, 2023.
Fithian has served NATO for 30 years. Popular with his constituents, distributors and reporters on the trade beat, he continues to work with the industry to steer theatre owners through the pandemic and address ongoing issues such as co-existing alongside streamers and the preservation of the theatrical release window.

Los Angeles, Aug 25 (Ians) The hard work of ‘Batgirl’ cast and crew may not completely go to waste as the movie will get its own screenings, though only a select group of insiders will get a chance to see it.
Sources told ‘Deadline’ and ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ that ‘Batgirl’ will be screened on the Warner Bros. lot this week.
It is believed that only the cast and crew who worked on the film along with representatives and studio executives were given invites to the screenings that began and will go throughout the week.
One source described the private screenings as “funeral screenings,” as it’s likely the only time a handful of people get to see the film before it is locked away in a vault, either physical or digital, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Warner Bros. shocked everyone on August 2 when it announced its decision to shelve ‘Batgirl’, starring Leslie Grace in the titular role.

Why did Warner Bros scrap Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt?
The cancellation by Warner Bros of two made-for-hbo Max streaming movies came as a shock to the town. There are several threads here, but the move amounts to an emphatic rejection of past WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar’s strategy to make original 70 million live-action and animated films directly for the streaming site.
The makers of the live-action Batgirl and the animated Scoob! learned today that those films were being stopped in their tracks. The timing was particularly awkward for Batgirl co-directors Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah. Both are in Morocco for El Arbi’s wedding — some wedding present — and they expected to return to the cutting room and continue work on the film that stars Leslie Grace, J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton.
There were initial cries that the scrapping of Batgirl carried bad optics because the title...

Marvel Studios’ new original series “Ms. Marvel” is to be given a unique theatrical release next month in Pakistan. The initiative is pioneered through licensee company Hkc Entertainment.
The decision to give the series a theatrical outing reflects several factors, including the show’s status as the first Marvel series to star a Muslim teen superhero as well as the omission of Pakistan in Walt Disney’s rollout of direct-to-consumer streaming platform Disney+. Other factors include the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays as a cinema-going peak and the underlying growth of the country’s cinema market, where “Spider-Man: No Way Home recently earned some 1.75 million from just 53 venues.
“Ms. Marvel” will be available on the Disney+ streaming service starting June 8, 2022. It will debut in Pakistani cinemas on June 16 with episodes 1 and 2 combined into a feature-length presentation. Episodes 3 and 4 will be similarly merged and release in Pakistan on June 30. Episodes 5 and 6 will release on...

Production has wrapped on “Ms. Marvel,” a Disney-Marvel series with a Muslim teen lead character and a significant Asian cast. Filming was relocated to Thailand after a stint in Georgia, U.S.
Marvel released a teaser trailer for the show in December last year, before the shift in filming location. In it, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described Ms. Marvel “as one of the newer characters in the Marvel Comic Universe.”
The six-part series features newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, a New Jersey-raised teenager who discovers that she has special powers. The character arc has her finding out who she is and learning about relationships.
Bisha K. Ali is set as co-writer and showrunner, with four directors including Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Adil El Arbi, Billal Fallah and Meera Menon.
The completed series is set to premiere on the Disney Plus streaming service, but Disney has not confirmed a release date...

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as our favorite Miami-Dade detectives.
In the first trailer for Sony’s “Bad Boys for Life,” the third installment of the action franchise, Smith’s Mike Lowry and Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett fantasize about retirement from their crime-riddled careers before getting pulled into one last case.
“You want your legacy to be muscle shirts and body counts?” Lawrence asks at the beginning of the trailer.
But after a bad guy from their past comes back into their lives to seek revenge, it doesn’t take long before the dynamic pair get back into the groove of things, effortlessly busting down doors and holding baddies at gunpoint. “One last time,” they say to each other before fist-bumping.
The pair are also joined by newcomers to the franchise Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, and Charles Melton, who play a team of younger cops who have to quickly learn the ropes.
