“A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”
On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. According to sources, the cancellation came about due to the writers and actors strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
In an Instagram post over the weekend, Jacobson wrote: “What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life. And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways...

‘A League Of Their Own’ Canceled: Prime Video Not Proceeding With Second & Final Season Amid Strikes
Exclusive: Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned.
It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed.
As Deadline reported earlier today, both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.
In a story earlier this week, Deadline reported that there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day, with freshman series going into Season 2 the most vulnerable. There was a similar string of unrenewals during the pandemic.

The Rockford Peaches are set to return to Amazon Prime Video one last time.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, A League of Their Own is returning to the streaming service for a second and final season.
And it will be short.
The outlet alleges that A League of Their Own Season 2 will comprise just four episodes.
Amazon has not confirmed the renewal, but THR notes that deals are still being worked out.
As a result, we should expect a formal pickup when the deals are completed.
The road to renewal was reportedly complicated by renegotiations with Sony to lower the drama's licensing fee.
The cast also had to sign new deals because the season will be comprised of half the episodes of A League of Their Own Season 1.
While Amazon has not announced the pickup, it is set to be billed as a "limited series."

Prime Video has renewed A League of Their Own for a second and final season. Following months of talks with Sony TV, the series will end with a four-episode Season 2, sources have confirmed.
The hourlong series, created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson, is an adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film. It follows the formation of the WWII-era women’s professional baseball team, weaving in the experiences of both diverse and queer women at the center — earning the show a cult following.

It is a tricky thing, recreating a beloved classic. Since the 1992 premiere of Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own” audiences have fallen in love again and again with Dottie Henson, Kit Keller, Marla Hooch, and the rest of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. But these characters were based on real people, and there was only so much that could fill 90 minutes in a ’90s movie. Now, Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham are filling in the stories the movie left out — namely those of Black and queer players — as seen through the eyes of Carson Shaw (Jacobson) and Max Chapman (Chanté Adams), the central characters of Prime Video’s take on “A League of Their Own.”
“The impetus behind this whole endeavor is our love for Penny Marshall’s movie,” executive producer Hailey Wierengo told IndieWire. “We don’t think it needs to be improved upon. We don...

The “A League of Their Own” Amazon series based on Penny Marshall’s popular 1992 comedy film will premiere Aug. 12.
Amazon announced the news via a first look teaser, set to the classic Stevie Nicks song “Edge of Seventeen.” The teaser can be seen below.
Both the show and film version of “A League of Their Own” take place in 1943, the year that the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was formed. The women’s league, a first of its kind in the sport, was created to keep baseball in the public consciousness after World War II saw the majority of male players drafted, essentially shutting down Major League Baseball. The show focuses on a different team than the one featured in the movie, in a completely separate storyline.

‘A League of Their Own’ Teaser: Abbi Jacobson Redefines Penny Marshall’s Grand Slam Baseball Dramedy
There’s no crying in baseball, but the story of the Rockford Peaches is just getting started.
Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television are behind the re-imagining of Penny Marshall’s hit 1992 film “A League of Their Own.” The eight-episode series adaptation, co-created and executive produced by “Broad City” alum Abbi Jacobson and “Mozart in the Jungle” helmer Will Graham, will premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival before debuting on Prime Video August 12.
Centered on the real-life all-female traveling baseball league formed in 1943, “A League of Their Own” introduces entirely new characters separate from the film. Jacobson stars as Carson, a catcher who joins a team during WWII and seems to spark a romance with slugger Greta (D’Arcy Carden).
Nick Offerman plays the team’s coach, with original star Rosie O’Donnell returning as a bartender. Other players include Chanté Adams, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roberta Colindrez, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kate Berlant, Kendall Johnson,...

Like the original 1992 Penny Marshall film from Sony’s Columbia Pictures, the hour-long series will tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show will also explore race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it.
Offerman will portray Casey “Dove” Porter, an ex-Cubs pitcher brought in to coach the Rockford Peaches, most famous because his forkball killed a dove in mid-air in the middle of a game. Described as inspiring and charismatic, Dove was thought to be the next big Major League Baseball star but blew his arm out after three years. Now he’s looking to...

Nick Offerman is joining Amazon’s “A League of Their Own,” where he’ll play a version of the role Tom Hanks had in the 1992 movie.
He won’t be playing the same character, however. Offerman is taking on the role of Casey “Dove” Porter, the coach of the team at the center of the series. Hanks, meanwhile, played the cynical but hilarious Jimmy Dugan, known for his memorable line, “There’s no crying in baseball!”
Described as a “reinterpretation” of the Penny Marshall film about the World War II-era Women’s Professional Baseball League, the Amazon version will widen the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve out their own paths toward the field, both in the League and outside of it.
