The Department of Education has launched an investigation into the death of Oklahoma teenager Nex Benedict, who died a day after a fight inside a school bathroom.
Friends and family said Benedict, who was 16 years old, used he and him pronouns as well as they and them pronouns. Relatives of the 10th-grader said Benedict had been bullied over his gender identity. His death has drawn national attention as activists and trans students have blamed the state’s antagonistic policies surrounding transgender students for the tragedy.

The Canadian government has warned LGBTQ citizens of the dangers that they could face by traveling to the United States in an updated travel notice.
While the government did not cite specific states or anti-lgbtq policies, the advisory encouraged Canadian residents to prepare for homophobic behavior and laws in America.
“Foreign laws and customers related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics can be very different from those in Canada,” the advisory stated. “As a result, you could face certain barriers and risks when you travel outside Canada. Research and prepare for your trip in advance to help your travels go smoothly.”
Canada’s notice comes a few months after a U.S.-based advocacy group, Human Rights Campaign, declared a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the country.

As right-wing legislators pass anti-trans, anti-drag and generally anti-lgbtq initiatives in a host of states across the country — such as Florida’s recently expanded “Don’t Say Gay” law, which forbids discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in any grade in public schools — Showtime is stepping up to support safe queer spaces and LGBTQ-owned businesses.
For the fourth year in a row, Showtime has partnered with the civil rights group The Human Rights Campaign for its Queer to Stay initiative, which will give 25 new grants to small businesses around the country with LGBTQ owners, with a total of $250,000 in contributions. The program — which has already supported 55 queer-owned companies since its inception in 2020 — is designed, per Showtime, to “uplift and preserve small businesses that serve the LGBTQ+ community; particularly businesses that are owned by or empower LGBTQ+ people of color, women and the transgender community.”

San Francisco, Feb 12 (Ians) Twitter under Elon Musk has failed to protect LGBTQ+ organisations and individuals from online violence and abuse, according to a new survey.
The survey by Amnesty International USA (Aiusa), GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign (Hrc) revealed that the harassment of LGBTQ+ activists intensified since Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022.
About 60 per cent of respondents reported that they had experienced an increase in abusive and hateful speech on Twitter since Musk took over as CEO.
The other 40 per cent reported that they had experienced the same level of abusive and hateful speech as before. None of the survey respondents reported a decrease in abusive and hateful speech.
“Twitter considers itself a ‘common digital town square’, yet it’s a town square where LGBTQ+ voices are all too often shouted down and silenced by constant hateful speech and harassment,” said Michael Kleinman, senior director of technology and...
