From the first screening of “The Idol” at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the warning signs appeared. Instead of the usually effusive ovation from the black-tie audience at the Palais des Festivals, tepid applause and awkward side-eye greeted the first two episodes of the HBO drama series, as Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled its rebranded streaming service Max in the U.S.
Social media was quick to weigh in with a less subtle verdict about Lily-Rose Depp in barely-there outfits as pop music star Jocelyn in the sexual thrall of Tedros, played by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. The graphic scenes included not just a writhing Depp in front of a camera demanding her sexual freedom, but Tesfaye choking Depp during sex.

“The Idol” will not be returning to HBO for a second season.
HBO has decided to not renew the drama series — co-created by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim — after its controversial and divisive first season, Et confirmed.
An HBO spokesperson said in a statement to Et, “’The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
“The Idol” premiered in June and ran for five episodes. The story was left open-ended at the conclusion of the season for the possibility of a second season, although nothing had been previously confirmed.

HBO has canceled "The Idol" - created by Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim - after one season. On Aug. 28, a spokesperson for HBO confirmed the news to Popsugar, saying, "'The Idol' was one of HBO's most provocative original programs, and we're pleased by the strong audience response. The World Class Sinner is heading to an early grave. “The Idol,” Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s controversial HBO drama has been canceled after just one season, IndieWire has confirmed.
“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to IndieWire. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. The news comes almost two months after the show’s one-and-only season, which premiered in June, wrapped after five controversy-ridden episodes. But even before it premiered, Levinson and Tesfaye’s series about the romance between a pop star and a cult leader received considerable attention, due to several allegations of a troubled development process.

There won’t be a comeback for The Idol.
HBO won’t move ahead with a second season of the drama from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, who also starred. The series, starring Lily-Rose Depp as a pop star who falls under the sway of a Hollywood club owner (Tesfaye), suffered mostly negative reviews from critics, and viewership fell short of some other recent HBO shows.

A decision on whether to renew or cancel The Idol was in flux until recently, sources say.

The Idol is one and done at HBO.
The controversial series from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, will not be returning for a second season.
It’s not a huge surprise given the critical and commercial reception of the show, which starred Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp. It also came after extensive reshoots following the departure of director Amy Seimetz, as revealed by Deadline in April 2022, and a reduced order taking its total number of episodes to five.
Some of the cast did mention the possibility of a second season during interviews, though show insiders said that creators did not come into the production process with a plan for a multi-season arc.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who played one of the managers of Depp’s pop star Jocelyn, previously said that the first season was left intentionally open-ended for the possibility of a second.

[This story contains spoilers from The Idol finale.]
After five episodes, Sam Levinson’s latest drama The Idol has come to an end. But the controversy surrounding the hotly debated Max series created with Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim continues. After four episodes of building a narrative that appeared to be about a young pop artist falling victim to the abuse of a cult leader and producer, Sunday night’s season finale exposed Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) as the orchestrator of the very circumstances she was thought to be a victim of following her entrance into Tedros’ (Tesfaye) crude world of music and masochism.
The unexpected shift has caused many viewers to double down on early critiques that the series was “torture porn.” But Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Jocelyn’s manager Destiny on The Idol, says the season one ending isn’t misogynistic, as some have argued. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Sunday’s season (series?) finale of the HBO drama “The Idol” was the show’s best episode yet — but only a few reputations will survive this summer disaster.
Episode 5 saw characters put on some clothes and get out of pop star Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) house for once. Director Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”) showed some of the visual dazzle for which he is famous, with long shots that were practically Kubrickian. Dirtball Svengali Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) received a measure of comeuppance, even as the show continued to affirm his alleged brilliance.
It was the best episode of “The Idol,” meaning it will be the worst episode of television this week. Shapeless, stupid and too performatively erotic and shocking, the five-episode collaboration among Levinson, music superstar Tesfaye and Reza Fahim is one of the worst shows ever made.

It’s barely July, and The Idol is already over.
The series, created by Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, ended its first season Sunday night with a finale so disorienting that Levinson’s prediction that his latest creation would be “the biggest show of the summer” now seems ridiculous. Conversations around The Idol, which has been met with derision ever since its premiere at Cannes in May, made me wonder if it was, in some twisted way, worth watching. Current speculation about its renewal has altered the question: Is any part of it salvageable?
The Idol’s problems aren’t limited to its gratuitous nudity or juvenile eroticism. The show is dogged by a thin plot and an incoherent narrative. Storylines are blithely picked up and discarded, their remains haunting attentive viewers. Character development? Who needs it. The show is suspiciously incurious about its gallery of maladjusted personas.

According to “The Idol’s” creator and star, Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) about-face was part of the plan well before Sunday night’s finale.
“Jocelyn is a very strategic and calculated person. She knows exactly what she wants, and she’s going to stop at nothing to get it,” Depp said in an HBO video breaking down Episode 5.
Depp is aware that “The Idol’s” audience has spent most of the series believing that Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) was taking advantage of Jocelyn. But it’s only after Jocelyn has taken credit for the singers Tedros found, kicked him out of her house and publicly ruined him that the truth comes out: she’s been the one using him this entire time.

“Regressive.” “Hostile to feminism.” “A male fantasy.” “Totally disempowered.” “Women as toilet paper.” “Sleazy and tawdry.” “Porny.”

The Idol is heading towards its season finale.
It has emerged that the HBO drama will consist of five episodes in its first season with the season finale airing on Sunday July 2.
This comes after it was originally believed to have received a six episode order, in November 2021, before the “creative changes” that Deadline revealed last year including the departure of original director Amy Seimetz.
Co-created by Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, The Idol follows pop star Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, who is determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America after a nervous breakdown derailed her last tour. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “The Idol” episode 3.
If there’s one thing “The Idol” is known for by its third episode, it’s shocking viewers with its racy sex scenes filled with an almost nude Lily-Rose Depp, who plays rebounding pop star Jocelyn, alongside arguably cringey lines from Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, who plays nightclub owner Tedros.
While Cannes audiences knew what to expect from the first two episodes of the music drama following its premiere at the festival — which debuted to scandalized reactions — the escalating events of episode 3 took many viewers by surprise.

HBO made history in 2018 for hiring Alicia Rodis on “The Deuce,” making her the first-ever intimacy coordinator on a major U.S. production. Then, in the June 4 premiere episode of HBO’s “The Idol,” a fictional intimacy coordinator got locked in a bathroom for doing his job.
In the scene, pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) is shooting photos for her album cover when she pulls open her robe to reveal her nipples. Immediately, the mousy and neurotic intimacy coordinator on set (played by Scott Turner Schofield) interrupts to remind the photographer (Eddy Chen) that the nudity rider in Jocelyn’s contract only permits the depiction of her “side-boob, under-boob and side flank.” The contract has been reviewed by “the label and her people,” he says, so any changes made require a 48-hour delay of the photo shoot, despite that Jocelyn chose to show her breasts without being directed to.

The internet loves to hate “The Idol,” but that doesn’t mean the show’s future has been set in stone. HBO has denied a report from Page Six claiming that Sam Levinson and The Weeknd’s controversial drama series will not return for a second season.
“It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of ‘The Idol’ has been determined,” HBO’s official PR Twitter account tweeted on Thursday, hours after Page Six’s report. “It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”
Page Six’s story quoted two anonymous sources close to the production. One source claimed that The Weeknd, or Abel Tesfaye, was not planning a second season of the series, and that the show was always “intended to be a limited series.” HBO has not explicitly marketed “The Idol” as a limited series, so it...

Not so fast. HBO has responded to a report in New York Post’s Page Six, citing sources, that the music drama series would likely not return for a second season.
“It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined,” HBO wrote in a tweet. “It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.” (See below).

False reports that “The Idol” is not returning for Season 2 were debunked Thursday, with HBO PR tweeting, “It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”
The response came after a story from Page Six stated that the currently airing season of the controversial musical drama starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp would be its first and only. The original headline for the Page Six story cited The Weeknd’s reportedly “difficult” behavior on set with influencing the decision.

The second episode of The Idol drew a smaller first-night audience than its series premiere.
HBO says 800,000 people watched the music-industry drama’s second outing Sunday night across all platforms. That’s down about 12 percent from the 913,000 people who watched the June 4 series premiere on its first night. A decline for the on-air telecast accounted for most of the drop, as linear viewership fell from 232,000 for the premiere to just 135,000 on Sunday. HBO says streaming on Max was on par with the previous week.
The Tony Awards on CBS were the biggest draw on linear TV Sunday night, although with an audience of 4.31 million, the Broadway honors didn’t bring in nearly as many viewers as the June 4 NBA Finals game (11.91 million) the previous week.
HBO also notes that the premiere of The Idol has grown to 3.6 million viewers over its first week, a roughly fourfold increase over its opening night.

The buzz surrounding HBO’s controversial new series The Idol might just be working to its benefit.
Episode 2 aired on Sunday night, drawing about 800,000 total viewers across Max and linear HBO telecasts. That’s a slight dip from last week’s premiere audience of 913,000. According to HBO, viewing held steady on Max and the dip in viewers came via linear.
That makes sense, considering the series is likely targeting a younger demographic than the typical linear television viewer. Nielsen reports that The Idol viewers on Max are tracking 21 years younger than viewers via the HBO channel, a wider disparity than the typical HBO drama.
As predicted, viewing for the premiere episode has significantly increased since the episode aired. It has now surpassed 3.6M viewers in its first week on the service, which HBO says outpaces the series premieres for both The White Lotus (3M in 2021) and Euphoria (3.3M in 2019) in the same time period.

In order to film Jocelyn’s big music video scene, Lily-Rose Depp had to spend “almost” four hours in hair. “The Idol” team revealed all the work Depp had to do to prepare for Episode 2 of the controversial HBO drama.
“Lily sat for almost four hours while all of those extensions were glued into her head because she had to dance for days,” Christopher Fulton, the head of the hair department, said in HBO’s recurring inside-the-episode segment, which you can watch above.
Most of “Double Fantasy” revolves around Jocelyn’s (Depp) latest music video. A routine performance turns into a high stakes battle for Jocelyn’s career as the directors, crew and managers surrounding her gauge whether she’s emotionally stable enough to keep performing. For all the hullabaloo surrounding the controversial sex scenes and predatory imagery in The Idol's premiere episode, nothing was more scandalous than Jane Adams' blistering performance as record-label executive Nikki Katz. Nikki's jaded, conscience-free strategies to sell Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) as a sexual object set the tone for the depraved version of Hollywood that Sam Levinson, Abel Tesfaye, and Reza Fahim are depicting in their show. While Depp was giving vacant pop object and Tesfaye was swanning around looking vampiric, Adams tore into her handful of scenes, rolled her eyes at anyone younger than 30, and projected authority in a sea of amateurs.

Though “The Idol” may present growing up in the trappings of fame as an inescapable nightmare, that’s not its star’s experience with Hollywood. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Thursday, Lily-Rose Depp spoke about her “normal” childhood with father Johnny Depp in comparison to the Sam Levinson series.
The daughter of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor and French singer and model Vanessa Paradis, Depp has been connected to the industry since birth. Despite that, she said that her parents “did their best to give my brother and I the most ‘normal’ childhood that we could have. Obviously, still not totally normal, but a sense of normalcy, at least.”

The premiere of The Idol didn’t draw a huge audience for HBO Sunday — but it did fall in line with some other recent series debuts on the premium cable outlet.
The Idol, which courted controversy with provocative trailers and was met with mostly negative reviews, drew 913,000 viewers across HBO (for the premiere and three replays) and Max on Sunday — with the majority of that coming via streaming on Max. The on-air debut on HBO drew 232,000 people, a little over a quarter of the total for the night.
The 913,000 viewers is a sizable step down from the first-night numbers for the final season of Succession, which immediately preceded The Idol in HBO’s 9 p.m. Sunday spot. It’s about level with a handful of other recent HBO drama debuts, however, including Winning Time (901,000 viewers) and season one of The White Lotus (944,000). HBO said “Hello, angel” to 913,000 viewers when it aired the series premiere of “The Idol” on Sunday night.
Provided by Warner Bros. Discovery, that number points to Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel combined with Wbd’s own data regarding streams on Max.
For context, “Euphoria” drew 1.1 million viewers when it premiered in 2019. Levinson’s second HBO outing is therefore 17% behind his first. The trajectory of “Euphoria” Season 1 viewership was mostly flat, peaking with 1.2 million viewers of the finale, meaning that “The Idol” could still manage to beat out “Euphoria’s” early performance if its audience continue to grow. But there’s only one month left to achieve that, as the drama’s first season will run for a short five episodes.

Will Sam Levinson have another HBO success on his hands with The Idol?
The series premiered Sunday night to 913,000 total viewers across Max and linear HBO telecasts, according to HBO. This is a fairly promising debut for The Idol, and viewership for the premiere is likely to grow in the next week as conversation about the somewhat controversial series continues ahead of Episode 2.
HBO says that new episodes of a series tend to draw 10%-20% of their total viewership on Sunday nights, indicating that The Idol will probably average several million viewers, at least for the first episode.
That being said, the series starring Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp didn’t quite match premiere viewership for Levinson’s first HBO hit, Euphoria. That series took home 1.1 million viewers on its premiere night in 2019, with a bit of a lead-in from a Season 2 episode of Big Little Lies.

Typically, when there’s less to say about a new show once you’ve seen it than before it premiered, that’s a bad sign. “The Idol,” co-created by “Euphoria” mastermind Sam Levinson, newcomer Reza Fahim, and The Weeknd’s Abel Tesfaye, first debuted at Cannes in late May, earning immediate pans from the smattering of film critics in attendance. But it rode onto the Croisette — and into its Sunday night HBO release — on a wave of behind-the-scenes controversy. Massive reshoots, expensive indulgences, and provocative subject matter drove early conversation and concern, all of which only seemed to fuel buzz around the series, rather than doom it to a “Vinyl”-like fate.

Review: With Barry and Succession ending last week, HBO is in need of a new Sunday tentpole for viewers to gather around and absorb before sharing across social media for the next week. With Sam Levinson’s Euphoria already a controversial hit for the cable network, HBO is banking on his polarizing follow-up, The Idol, to be the next big thing. After a divisive premiere at Cannes last week, The Idol premiered without providing screeners to critics for review. That usually means either the series is bad or there is concern that spoilers will premiere before the show. In the case of The Idol,...

After setting the internet ablaze for months, “The Idol” finally premiered its first of five episodes on HBO Sunday night, establishing the stakes of a lurid show business saga certain to provoke strong reactions all the way through.
The news cycle around the show, co-created by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and “Euphoria” co-creator Sam Levinson, has been as messy as the life of the pop star at its center: Originally directed as a dreamlike odyssey by “The Girlfriend Experience” showrunner Amy Seimetz, the unfinished version of “The Idol” was canned by Tesfaye and rebooted as a whole new project almost exactly one year ago with Levinson at the helm. While it remains to be seen whether the revision was worth the effort, the premiere makes it clear that any allegations about Tesfaye’s off-screen antics pale in comparison to the eerie villain he portrays in the show.

The stars of HBO’s controversial new drama The Idol are defending the show as it makes its premiere Sunday night.
The series, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month, stars Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a pop star trying to make a comeback after a nervous breakdown, and Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd) as a nightclub manager and self-help guru working with her to achieve said comeback. It was created by Sam Levinson (Euphoria), Tesfaye and Reza Fahim.
Early on, the promotional materials for the show leaned into its edginess, calling Levinson and Tesfaye “the sick & twisted minds” behind “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood” in a teaser. But then the show became the subject of unfavorable attention when Rolling Stone published an exposé calling the show a “rape fantasy” and alleging that it went “wildly, disgustingly off the rails” after cast changes and the departure of original director Amy Seimetz.

Lily-Rose Depp takes on her biggest role to date, playing pop star Jocelyn, in HBO’s “The Idol,” which premiered on Sunday night.
Depp — who knows a thing or two about stardom, having grown up in the Hollywood limelight herself — says she was interested in “The Idol” because it delves into the crazy and chaotic world of the music industry.
“I was really intrigued by this project as soon as I heard about it. The world that it was exploring with all of the craziness and chaos that goes on is one that we don’t get to see all the time,” Depp says. Speaking about her character, she adds, “Jocelyn is a pop star who is constantly surrounding by people who she’s not sure if she can trust.”

Despite their unbreakable character bond in HBO and A24’s upcoming series “The Idol”, Lily-Rose Depp sometimes maintained her distance from Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye while filming the controversial series.
Initial trailers for the already infamous series, which garnered a standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival last month, showed electrifying on-screen chemistry between Depp’s troubled pop star character Jocelyn and Tesfaye’s sleazy nightclub owner, Tedros.

However, a much different on-set dynamic occurred behind the scenes during the filming of the five-episode season, Depp recently revealed to EW.
“I don’t think anybody went full method — nobody lost their minds,” she recounts, before remembering: “Well, sometimes when Abel would get — I don’t want to reveal too much about where Abel’s character goes, but when he would be in full Tedros mode sometimes,...
