Yaya (played by Camryn Jones) just wants to walk to school with her boyfriend. Living on the South Side of Chicago in a house overflowing with family members, the only thing that gets the exhausted teen out of bed every morning is knowing Dre (Travis Wolfe Jr.) will be waiting on her stoop. The only issue: her protective brother, Mouse (Victor Musoni), doesn’t approve. He thinks her friends aren’t a good influence — they show up late to school too often, eat too much junk food, and don’t pay enough attention to their surroundings. Mouse, clearly, just wants his little sister to be safe, get good grades, and live a better life, but by intimidating Dre, he’s unwittingly snuffing out her one spark of joy — joy that manifests itself via her favorite hobby: dance.

Amazon Prime Video has canceled “Paper Girls” after one season.
The series was produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television in association with Plan B. It is based on the graphic novel series of the same name written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chiang and published by Image Comics.
“Paper Girls” begins in the early morning hours after Halloween 1988, when four newspaper delivery girls — Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiffany (Camryn Jones), and Kj (Fina Strazza) — are out on their route when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever. Transported into the future, they must figure out a way to get back home to the past, a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves. While reconciling that their futures are far different than their 12-year-old selves imagined, they are being hunted by...

Summer has ended, and school is in session as Quinta Brunson and Abbott Elementary taught a masterclass at the 6th Annual Black Reel TV Awards presented by idobi.
Brunson and her freshman comedy, Abbott Elementary proved that it’s just simple math as they racked up seven wins at this year’s Black Reel Television Awards. She won four awards on her own as she received Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary and Outstanding Guest Actress for A Black Lady Sketch Show. Brunson triumphed in a surprise upset of the comedy actress category over Issa Rae, the sentimental favorite, in her farewell season of Insecure.
While Glover led the pack in individual nominations with five, he was able to take home one win for Outstanding Actor, Comedy Series for Atlanta.

Prime Video's adventure series "Paper Girls" has something for everyone: coming-of-age stories, complicated friendships between girls, sci-fi wars, time travel, and much more. The eight-episode first season has gotten plenty of buzz, but will that be enough to bring it back for season two?
Right now, it's still a little too early to tell. The first season only started streaming on July 29, so it'll probably be well into fall before Prime Video makes an announcement one way or another. "Paper Girls" is based on a 30-issue comic-book series, so there's definitely plenty more material to explore for future seasons of the TV adaptation if it gets the green light.
How Does "Paper Girls" Season 1 End?
"Paper Girls" season one ends on a cliffhanger that lends itself to the story continuing into a second season, even though it's not assured. After a season full of time travel, devastating secrets, and warring factions,...

If the final moments of the “Paper Girls” finale left you scrambling, well, welcome to the club. But we are here to work through it with you — and we got the cast’s input on things as well.
Now, before we get into what comes next, let’s lay out what all went down. In the season finale, now streaming on Prime Video, we see Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiff (Camryn Jones) and Kj (Fina Strazza) set to be returned to their original timeline, with their memories erased. But, thanks to some help from Prioress (Adina Porter), they manage to flee from the Grandfather (Jason Mantzoukas) in escape pods.
Prioress — who sacrificed herself in the process — released them because as it turns out, Tiff is instrumental in the creation of time travel, and thus, the time war. Prioress was around the same age as the paper girls...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Paper Girls” on Amazon Prime
In “Paper Girls,” Amazon Prime’s new series based on the comics of the same name, four girls come face to face with their futures — but only three of them get to meet their future selves. That’s because, in Mac’s future, she’s dead. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s something that young series star Sofia Rosinsky actually enjoyed playing out.
In the first episode of the series, which is now streaming in its entirety on Amazon Prime, we find Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Rosinsky), Tiff (Camryn Jones) and Kj (Fina Strazza) transported to 2019. There, they almost immediately run into Erin’s older self, played by Ali Wong. Though the girls are dubious, it doesn’t take long for Mac to figure out how the internet works and do some research. In Prime Video's "Paper Girls," Sofia Rosinsky, Fina Strazza, Riley Lai Nelet, and Camryn Jones star as four very different 12-year-olds in 1988 who are thrown together thanks to the same job: delivering the newspaper on their bicycles in the wee hours of the morning. During one route the day after Halloween, a series of bizarre events send them forward in time to 2019 and into the middle of a time war. Eventually, the girls become very close, but it's a long journey to friendship that takes place over the course of season one.
Rosinsky tells Popsugar that the showrunners tried to mimic this dynamic with the actors, too. "We were asked not to speak to each other before actually getting into Chicago and meeting for the first time," she says. "When you see the Paper Girls at the beginning just getting to know each other, we were also just getting to know each other off-screen.

Amazon’s Paper Girls features time travel, a burgeoning interdimensional conflict and giant robots straight out of Pacific Rim. It’s certain to earn everybody’s lazy comparisons to Stranger Things, though it feels essential to mention that Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s Image Comics series predates Netflix’s exercise in ’80s teen nostalgia.
You can’t describe Paper Girls without talking about its science fiction spine. That, however, is not the thing. It’s the thing that gets you to the thing.

Let’s get this out of the way now: The comparisons “Paper Girls” will get to “Stranger Things” are inevitable, but not especially fair.
Yes, “Paper Girls” also opens in the 1980s with four 12-year-olds on bikes who end up tackling otherworldly forces way bigger than themselves. But by the middle of the first episode, “Paper Girls” — which was a comic book series before “Stranger Things” was a TV show, anyway — turns itself inside out to become something else entirely. Suddenly, what at first looked like yet another throwback Amblin-esque series reveals a more bittersweet lens, and harder science fiction heart.
As written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang (both executive producers on this show), the original “Paper Girls” comics developed a devoted fanbase thanks to its sharp characterization, unsparing twists, and Chiang’s angular imagery rendered in fluorescent pinks and blues by colorist Matt Wilson. The Amazon adaptation,...

This Paper Girls review contains no spoilers.
The main thing working against Paper Girls — Amazon’s mostly excellent TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s multiple Eisner-winning Image Comics series — is Stranger Things. Seeing how both chronicle the adventures of 1980s pre-teens who are unwittingly thrust into supernatural conflicts in which the fate of humanity is at stake, some comparisons are bound to arise. This, combined with the fact that Stranger Things is the hugest thing in genre television in recent memory, means that the negative/most vocal aspects of fandom are right now sharpening their Demogorgon-esque claws to dismiss Paper Girls as a derivative rip-off of the blockbuster series.
Not only would this be wrong but wholly inaccurate, as Paper Girls (the comic of which actually pre-dates the Netflix juggernaut by a year) is its own original entity that shares only the most surface and fleeting...

The first thing “Paper Girls” has to do is distinguish itself from “Stranger Things.” This task isn’t especially fair; this Amazon Prime Video series about a quartet of 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls in 1988 who accidentally travel through time is based on a comic book by Brian K. Vaughn and Cliff Chiang that was first published mere months after “Stranger Things” premiered. But it’s unavoidable all the same, especially in a summer when the newest “Stranger Things” season debuted to blockbuster-level attention on Netflix. Is Amazon’s “Paper Girls” perfect for fans of that show, or does it play (however inadvertently) as a cheap imitation?
The answer is a little of both: As a sci-fi adventure, “Paper Girls” is mostly lacking, hampered by chintzy-looking special effects and chaotic, unconvincing world-building. As an unusual coming-of-age drama, though, it has its moments—including some material that digs deeper than the big-budget ’80s karaoke of Stranger Things.

If adaptations of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic books didn’t have terrible luck with timing, they’d have no luck at all.
Vaughan has co-created some of the most acclaimed, beloved comics of this century, but they have tended to involve such elaborate concepts and dense storytelling that they’ve taken an incredibly long time to journey from page to screen. As a result, they’ve arrived in other media at the worst possible moments. Runaways, about the rebellious teenage children of a group of supervillains, debuted on Hulu...

It’s Stand by Me meets Stranger Things meets The Wizard of Oz meets Terminator. Reminiscent of several nostalgic ’80s sci-fi touchstones, Amazon’s Paper Girls brings a fresh element to the classic archetype: time travel. And as if time travel weren’t complicated enough, Paper Girls follows an all-out time war, with four girls at the center of it all.
Based on the comic series by Brian K. Vaughan (who also wrote the series Saga and Ex Machina), the Amazon show brings four newcomers into the spotlight, as they prepare to headline their own show on a major streaming platform. Sofia Rosinsky, Riley Lai Nelet, Camryn Jones and Fina Strazza hold it down as the titular paper girls — a group of 12-year-olds delivering early-morning newspapers in Stony Stream, Ohio, in 1988.
