A raft of 30 original shows developed for — and briefly distributed by — now-defunct streaming startup Quibi are getting new life as Roku Originals, with a premiere date of May 20.
The shows, which include Emmy winner #FreeRayshawn as well as series starring Kevin Hart, Chrissy Teigen, Anna Kendrick, Chance the Rapper and more, will be available on the Roku Channel. (See the full list below.) The remaining titles from the full roster of 75 titles will go live on Roku by the end of 2021.
The free, ad-supported Roku Channel offers 190 live, linear channels and 40,000 movie and TV titles, to viewers beyond Roku’s sizable base of connected devices and smart TVs. Unlike the subscription model of Quibi, the originals will be available for free. Limited advertising will be shown in between the seven- to 10-minute episodes.

Quibi is not moving ahead with a planned series dramatizing the rise of Snapchat and its founder, Evan Spiegel, Variety has learned exclusively.
The project was announced at the SXSW film festival last year by Quibi founder and board chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg. It was to be based on the feature script “Frat Boy Genius” by Elissa Karasik, which was featured on the 2018 Black List.
“We want to tell a story that’s as compelling and interesting about Snapchat and Evan as ‘The Social Network’ was for Facebook,” Katzenberg said at the time.
The news comes just one week after the launch of the mobile-only streaming app, which aims to premium short form content to subscribers in brief chapters, or “quick bites.” Quibi CEO Meg Whitman said earlier on Monday that the app had been downloaded 1.7 million times since launch. The service launched with a 90-day free trial.

Updated: Quibi, the mobile-only streaming service from Jeffrey Katzenberg, said it hit 1.7 million installations within the first week of launch — higher than third-party estimates. According to analysts, the big-budget, short-form video streamer has had a relatively tepid reception in part because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Quibi said Monday that it reached 1.75 million downloads. By contrast, according to research firm Apptopia, the Quibi app had been downloaded and installed 1.15 million times as of Sunday, April 12. The service launched with a 90-day free trial.
Downloads have been fairly evenly split between iOS and Android devices, with about 87% of the installs from the U.S. and 6% from Canada, according to Apptopia data. Quibi’s app is available worldwide but the startup, led by Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman, is focusing its marketing and customer-acquisition efforts on North America.

Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, Jack Black, Tony Greenhand, Beth Ditto, Mark Webber, Ronnie Adrian, Kim Gordon, Udo Kier, Carrie Brownstein | Written and Directed by Gus Van Sant
Gus Van Sant’s biopic Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot is a beautifully melancholic coy and frequently dark passage and resulting examination of addiction and pain in the short, but the remarkably artistic life of John Callahan. Callahan, played by the extraordinary talented Joaquin Pheonix, who injects such passion and character into a cold story. The energy and understanding of such a script and the character are what Pheonix excels in throughout his career. Nothing ever feels like a cash grab, nor fluke in his strongest most marvellous performances and his spectacular rendition in Van Sant’s film is nothing short of perfect.

Joaquin Phoenix stars in his second Specialty release in the last few months with Gus Van Sant’s Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far On Foot, with Jonah Hill and Rooney Mara. Amazon Studios is opening the title in several locations in New York and Los Angeles ahead of a wider roll out. The title will likely headline a fairly busy weekend of Specialty newcomers given the tentpole season. Rob Reiner put up his own money to finance, in part, his latest directorial effort Shock And Awe, a project that was twenty years in the making and takes a look at events precipitating the Iraq Invasion in 2003. PBS Distribution is opening Kimberly Reed’s doc Dark Money in New York ahead of a select national roll out. The feature examines the role of ‘dark money’ in U.S. politics. Among foreign-language titles, Cohen Media Group opened Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti...

Few independent films in 2018 can boast the type of A-list cast that Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot has. In teaming back up with star Joaquin Phoenix for a look at the life of cartoonist John Callahan, filmmaker Gus Van Sant has also brought in Jonah Hill and Rooney Mara for central roles. Usually, indies don’t pull stars like this. Then again, few movies in general are like this one. Back at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, some thought they were seeing an Academy Award hopeful here. Others? Not so much. This week, the picture finally opens, so you’ll be able to see for yourself. This flick is biopic, albeit a bit of an unusual one. IMDb explains it as such: “After Portland slacker John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) nearly loses his life in a car accident, the last thing he intends to do is give up drinking.
