“I don’t think any of them shocked me,” says Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson when responding to the elimination of Evelyn Cormier, Ashley Hess, Eddie Island and Riley Thompson during the Top 14 results episode of “American Idol.” “I sort of thought that Luke Bryan was going to save Riley … but she had such a bad performance I think that really hurt her.” Davidson joins senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Susan Wloszczyna to discuss the recently revealed Top 10, the four singers sent packing and the sickeningly sweet critiques of judges Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

American Idol has found its finalists. The singing competition revealed its top 10 singers this week, whittling the contestants down from 14. That means four singers had to say goodbye, and while they're sad of course, it's still pretty impressive that they made it to the top 14. "It's so crazy to even be in the top 14 with the thousands of people that have auditioned, and the fact that we made it this far is just incredible," Ashley Hess told E! News after Monday's show. "It's incredible to be here. I never thought I'd make it this far," Riley Thompson said. "So to be in the top 14 on American Idol...like you see it on TV, but you never think...

Dimitrius Graham‘s journey on “American Idol” Season 17 almost came to end during Monday’s Top 14 results episode, but Luke Bryan was so moved by his “save-me” song of Billie Eilish‘s “when the party’s over” that he just couldn’t let him go. “I have changed my mind three times in 10 seconds,” Luke said before announcing, “I have to lean on the sheer emotion I felt: Dimitrius.” Did Luke make the right choice by saving Dimitrius and advancing him to the Top 10? “American Idol” judge Lionel Richie was so entertained by Uche‘s “save-me” song of Rihanna‘s “Diamonds” that he jumped the gun by instantly saving him during Monday’s Top 14 results episode. Instead of giving a normal critique of Uche’s performance, Lionel walked up on stage and escorted the 24-year-old Sugarland, Texas resident to safety, proclaiming “That’s my pick!” when host Ryan Seacrest asked what he was doing. One of Katy Perry‘s favorite contestants on “American Idol” — Alyssa Raghu — was in danger of going home during Monday’s Top 14 results episode, but luckily Katy had the power to do something about it. The Monday April 15 episode of the ABC revival of “American Idol” saw the Top 14 reduced to the Top 10. Seven of the singers continuing on in the show — Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Walker Burroughs, Wade Cota, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg — learnt that they numbered among America’s favorites and earned places in the Top 10 based on their performances on Sunday’s show.

No one expected Monday’s episode of American Idol — which narrowed its crop of finalists down to 10 — to be easy, but I don’t think anyone expected it to be this messy, either.
From Ryan Seacrest’s uncomfortable walk-and-talks with the contestants (most of whom responded with one-word answers in a desperate attempt to move on) to his super awkward announcements of the individual results (those fake-outs were… bad), the season’s first official live episode was… kind of a mess. And that’s not even including the times that the judges literally discussed how awkward this show’s elimination process is.

‘American Idol’ recap: Top 14 sing for America’s votes on Night 12 of Season 17 [Updating Live Blog]
Six weeks after the second season of “American Idol” hosted by Ryan Seacrest began on ABC, America finally gets a chance to vote as the Top 14 take to the stage on the April 14 episode. These finalists survived a grueling process that began with winning over the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — at a regional audition and getting a ticket to Hollywood.
A whopping 150 plus would-be winners made the trip to La La Land, before being cut to 40. That group then competed both individually and in groups before the judges decided on the Top 20. This score of artists were then asked to sing both solo and in duets with celebrities and convince the three judges that they deserved a place in the Top 14.

For the first time all season, Sunday’s American Idol dimmed the lights to reveal (half of) the singers proceeding to the live episodes, sending three hopefuls home in the process.
But that made the night sound way more depressing than it was. With a little help from some of the most recognizable voices in music — including Jason Mraz, Shaggy and Pat Benatar — Sunday’s episode gave us a handful of really incredible duets

We're still just in the audition rounds, and the latest season of American Idol already has us feeling pretty emotional. One of the standout auditions so far has been Ashley Hess, a dental hygienist who wowed the judges with her singing and piano skills. In fact, she impressed them so much that the entire group of judges got up from their usual seats behind a panel and moved up for a closer look.
Hess, 27, tackled Nora Jones's "Don't Know Why," accompanying herself on the piano despite her nerves. A few minutes in, the judges got up and moved their chairs up to the piano to get an even more powerful effect from her music. Thoroughly impressed, they sent her through to Hollywood right away!
