For director, co-writer and star Jerry Seinfeld, “Unfrosted” was an opportunity to bring something a little less serious to the entertainment zeitgeist. A humorless life without the ability to make fun of ourselves, he postured, doesn’t make for “good living.”
“Don’t give up laughing and humor and comedy in your life. It’s the best way to get through life,” Seinfeld said. “We all want to not hurt each other’s feelings. But if we go too far, and nobody can make fun of anybody, that’s not good living.”
“Unfrosted” is a fictionalized account of the creation of the Kellogg’s staple Pop-Tarts. The plot takes a “space race” approach, with Post Cereal as the other heavyweight in the fight to be the first to craft the toasted pastry treat.
It costars a kaleidoscope of Hollywood funny people, including Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant,...

As the exclusive window for merger discussions between Paramount Global and David Ellison’s Skydance Media enters its final hours, the future of the company remains uncertain.
There has been no official decision on an extension on the exclusivity window between Skydance and Paramount, which is set to expire Friday night. A spokesperson for Paramount declined to comment. Representatives for Skydance did not immediately return TheWrap’s request for comment.
Paramount’s board faces three potential options now. It could carry on with negotiations with Skydance, a deal that has proven highly unpopular with shareholders. It could let the exclusivity deadline expire and pivot to consideration of a $26 billion all-cash joint bid by Sony and Apollo Global Management. Or it could go it alone under its new Office of the CEO after the departure last week of CEO Bob Bakish.
The tough decision comes as Paramount shares have fallen 36.8% in the past year.

Paramount was a no-show on Oscars Sunday with just two nominations (sound and visual effects for “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning”) and no wins, but for president and CEO Bob Bakish, Monday is no better.
This morning, media analyst Rich Greenfield of LightShed Partners published a blistering open letter to Paramount controller Shari Redstone: “Dear Shari: Why You Must Fire Bob Bakish to Save Paramount.” Here we go.
Greenfield said Bakish was the man for the job… in 2016, when Viacom and CBS were still split (and Les Moonves had the top job at CBS a job). But with the creation of Paramount Global (fka ViacomCBS), Bakish made the “critical mistake” — Greenfield’s words — of getting wrapped up in the streaming wars.
The mistake, according to Greenfield, was creating Paramount+. By attempting to reinvent niche service CBS All Access as a Netflix competitor, Paramount+ may have created a “mountain of entertainment.

Word has it that Sean Bailey had been looking to move on. However the news this week Disney’s president of motion picture studios has stepped down has much to do with CEO Bob Iger’s urgent course correction at a storied studio that just endured a relatively poor year at the box office and is facing pressure from activist shareholders to improve the stock price.
Bailey, a 15-year veteran of the company, was the executive who mined Disney’s animation vault and adapted them into live-action tentpoles that often crushed it at the box office.

Walmart could be gearing up to purchase TV manufacturer Vizio, helping it compete with other device manufacturers by giving it proprietary data.
Walmart made headlines earlier this week when reports began to circulate that it had engaged with Vizio in talks to purchase the TV manufacturer. Doing so would give Walmart its own line of smart TVs, but more importantly, it would gain access to proprietary shopper data owned by Vizio that it could leverage for use in its advertising business. If Walmart were to acquire Vizio, it could have big implications for companies like Roku and others who manufacture streaming devices as well as offer ad-supported streaming platforms.
Walmart’s purchase of Vizio would give it control over Vizio interfaces, as well as the WatchFree+ streaming service. Roku has big presence in Walmart stores for now, but it could lose share if Walmart begins stocking its shelves with its own devices.

2023 is in the books, and it brought Hollywood a range of old and new challenges. The writers and actors strikes will keep having an impact on the film slate and, as a result, on companies’ financials in the new year. And deal chatter across Wall Street and Hollywood is likely to persist.
AI and its impact on and implications for doing business is also expected to keep being a hot topic of debate. And advertising market clouds, cord-cutting, and progress toward streaming profitability are expected to be on entertainment industry executives’ minds.
But 2024 could, of course, also have surprises up its sleeve. With that in mind, The Hollywood Reporter looked through predictions by analysts and other experts to identify some of the more provocative forecasts for the new year.

Annette Bening, who recently starred in Netflix’s biopic “Nyad,” will receive a special Golden Medallion tribute award from the Telluride Film Festival on Jan. 6, 2024. Meg Ryan will present the award to her at Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Los Angeles. The event will also feature a conversation focused on her career trajectory, which Bening’s “Nyad” co-star Jodie Foster will moderate.
Due to the actors strike, Bening was unable to accept the honor at the Telluride Film Festival in September, marking the first time Telluride has presented an honor outside of the dates of the festival. Previous Golden Medallion recipients include Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins and Kate Winslet.
Bening was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for portraying Diana Nyad. She has also received Oscar nominations for “The Grifters,” “American Beauty,” “Being Julia” and “The Kids Are All Right.”

Don’t be surprised if top Hollywood studio executives and theater owners aren’t feeling the Christmas spirit this year. They’re bracing for a tumultuous 2024 ride at the domestic box office after a slew of high-profile tentpoles were pushed to 2025 because of the lengthy writers and actors strikes.
In a major blow to the post-pandemic recovery effort, domestic box office revenue in 2024 is now expected to come in behind that of 2023, a reversal of fortunes no one predicted. If projections are right, domestic box office in 2024 could top out at $7.5 billion to $8 billion, compared to an expected $8.8 billion to $8.9 billion this year, say multiple studio executives who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter (a few are more bullish in thinking $8 billion to $8.5 billion is possible).
The culprit: a sparse release calendar, particularly during the first three months of the year. “It’s a disaster,” says one studio exec regarding the first part of the year.

Since Wednesday, Trump has been leveling a frenzied barrage of posts on Truth Social attacking Engoron’s wife. Many of the posts are based on anti-Trump social media posts attributed to a user who goes by “Dawn Marie,...

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America. But Hollywood executives may not be looking to the heavens — they’ll be watching David Zaslav.
April 8 is the date the Reverse Morris Trust lock-up period from Discovery’s WarnerMedia deal with AT&T expires. Put simply, it’s when Warner Bros. Discovery can again be involved in M&a activity without getting brutalized on taxes. (The Reverse Morris Trust is a method of tax avoidance that allows a company to sell off unwanted assets without incurring tax obligations on the gains from those sales.)
The otherwise random Monday, 139 days from today (2024 is a leap year!) and the day we’ll have a full sense of how Disney’s “The Omen” prequel film “The First Omen” performed over opening weekend, will be an unofficial holiday for Zaslav and his CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels. How’s that Madonna song go? “Holiday/Consolidate.”

Donald Trump has filed for a mistrial in his New York civil fraud case, claiming that Judge Arthur Engoron and his law clerk Allison Greenfield have unfairly skewed the proceedings against the former president.
Trump’s attorneys accuse Engoron, who has clashed with the former president and his legal team throughout the trial, of improperly “co-judging” the case with Greenfield, writing in a Wednesday filing that the court had “impermissibly exceeded its discretion in granting [Greenfield] unprecedented status and input into these proceedings and restricted the speech of anyone who seeks to comment on this status,...

New York Judge Arthur Engoron expanded a gag order on Friday against Donald Trump to include the attorneys representing him in the state’s civil fraud lawsuit against the former president.
The order was originally put in place after Trump attacked one of Engoron’s clerks, Allison Greenfield, on Truth Social, baselessly insinuating that she had a romantic relationship with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-n.Y.).

On Wednesday, a Manhattan judge fined Donald Trump $10,000 for violating an order against discussing court staff with the press.
Judge Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over New York Attorney General Letitia James’ case against Trump, which claims he fraudulently inflated his company’s value over the years in order to get bank loans, ruled that Trump made comments about his law clerk, Allison Greenfield, in violation of a gag order that he had issued previously.
While speaking to television cameras, Trump called Engoron partisan, saying that the judge has “a person who’s very partisan sitting alongside him. Perhaps even much more partisan than he is.”
The judge ordered Trump to take the stand to explain his actions.
The former president tried to deny allegations and claim he had been speaking about his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. His lawyers chimed in and said that he referred to Cohen by “much worse names.

As Adobe rolled out a string of new generative AI-driven tools, CEO Shantanu Narayan promised “accountability, responsibility and transparency” in his opening keynote at the company’s annual Max confab, which is taking place this week at the Los Angeles Convention Center. He went on to describe AI as a “creative co-pilot” to speed up productivity and noted that “while there is apprehension” about the tech, “I firmly believe it will never replace human ingenuity.”
Following the wide release of its Firefly generative AI tech last month, Adobe used the Max event to introduce new AI-driven features for its creative software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Express. It also highlighted in the keynote its text-based editing tool in Premiere Pro.
During the event, Adobe Digital Media Cto Ely Greenfield elaborated on the company’s promise of “accountability, responsibility and transparency” where generative AI is concerned. “It means that we put...

Donald Trump has been told to watch what he says and posts, or risk ending up behind bars for up to a month.
In the second day of the former Potus’ financial fraud trial, Judge Arthur Engoron just issued a limited gag order against everyone in the civil case to stop verbal and social media-posted swipes at members of his staff.
“Personal attacks on members of my court staff are unacceptable, not appropriate” Engoron made clear Tuesday after Trump took an underhanded partisan swing at the judge’s principal law clerk, Allison Greenfield, on Trump’s Truth Social platform.
Calling what Trump did “a disparaging, untrue and personally identifying post about a member of my staff,” Engoron only cited “one of the defendants” as the one behind the post. But there was no secret to whom he was referring.

New Girl aired on Fox from 2011 until 2018. While fans of the series would have liked to see it continue, the series ended in a satisfying way. Fans got to see Jess Day, Nick Miller, Schmidt, Cece Parekh, Winston Bishop, and even Coach all find love and move past the roommate phase of life when the show ended. It still hasn’t stopped fans from hoping for a reboot, so what exactly is the cast of New Girl up to these days?

For over 100 years, the Motion Picture & Television Fund has provided financial support and services to entertainment industry members in need of help. That need has never been greater as the actors strike stretches into its third week and the writers strike into its third month — both with no end in sight and thousands unable to work.
To support the fund, Max Greenfield, Darren Criss, Colman Domingo, Yvette Nicole Brown and Harry Shum Jr. joined hundreds of guests on the Neuhouse Hollywood rooftop on Sunday night for the MPTF Next Gen Summer Party.
While the mood was festive, the strikes and their implications for Hollywood were never far from anyone’s mind.

The tipping point has finally arrived. After years of heady growth, heightened demands and unpredictable development and production schedules, seasoned TV writers are feeling the burn and yearning for the structure of simpler times, before streaming changed everything. As striking Writers Guild of America members gather daily on picket lines in Los Angeles and New York, the realization of how much has been lost amid the unprecedented spike in episodic production has come into sharp focus.
“I miss the predictability of pilot season,” says Cindy Chupack, a veteran writer-producer who is a two-time Emmy winner for her work on “Modern Family” and “Sex and the City.” Chupack adds that these are words she never thought she’d say — or even think. And she’s not alone.
Since the writers strike began on May 2, the unintended consequences of the ramp-up in series production during the past dozen years have been laid bare.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav pushed back against the idea that Hollywood studios see the Writers Guild of America strike as an opportunity to cut costs.
“We’re a pure storytelling company, and we’ve been fighting to get the greatest creatives to come work at Warner Bros.,” Zaslav said during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Friday. “In order to create great storytelling, we need great writers, and we need the whole industry to work together and everybody deserves to be paid fairly.”
Zazlav seemed as anxious as anyone to end the labor stoppage that began this week.
“So our number one focus is let’s try and get this resolved,” he said. “Let’s do it in a way that that the writers feel that they’re valued — which they are — and they’re compensated fairly. And then off we go, let’s tell great stories together.

Money first, product later: David Zaslav and the rest of Warner Bros. Discovery’s leadership team will address Wall Street on Friday as the company is preparing to launch its controversial Max rebrand on May 23. Analysts are already impatient to see if the megadeal Zaslav architected is paying off as it reports first-quarter earnings.
“It’s been over a year since the Warner Bros. Discovery is anxious to see results from its cost-cutting measures and build some momentum as it launches Max later this month.”
That momentum just hit a speed bump: The Writers Guild of America is on strike, with some picketers naming Zaslav on their signs and the union calling out his compensation package along with other studio heads.

How do the stars of The Neighborhood feel about hitting 100 episodes?
“Well, we came in together in free agency and said, ‘Let’s get 200,'” Max Greenfield tells TVLine. “We’d already done the hundred thing. Greenfield, for example, has shared some reservations about a reboot. "I think if Liz [Meriwether] wanted to do it, who created the show, obviously, she thought there was some way back in," he told E! News in October 2022. "It...
