Remember Lisa Marie Nowak? She’s the love-crazed astronaut who, in 2007, drove from Texas to Florida armed with a Bb gun, plastic gloves, a steel mallet, a can of pepper spray, and six feet of rubber tubing to confront another female astronaut, her rival in a romantic triangle. While nobody was harmed in what the police assessed as an attempted kidnapping, what made the story a late-night comic’s punchline was the (disputed) tidbit that Ms. Nowak was wearing a Nasa-issued diaper on her road trip of fury to avoid potty breaks. The new film Lucy In The Sky starring Natalie Portman as Nowak (her name changed to Lucy Cola) takes some major liberties with the story, omitting the memorable detail about the diaper. Nowak’s story was the kind of bizarre tabloid headline ripe for juicy satire like I, Tonya, a fascinating subject and a deliciously strange story...

Natalie Portman does not play Lisa Nowak. In Lucy in the Sky, she plays a married astronaut who, upon her return to Earth after a mission, has an affair with a fellow astronaut, played by Jon Hamm, and becomes increasingly unhinged when he moves on to someone else. But that's a reminiscent outline of what happened to Nowak, an accomplished Nasa astronaut who in 2007 packed her car with the sort of items that would raise suspicion, put on an adult diaper—the kind the astronauts wear in space—and embarked on a 950-mile drive to confront her ex-lover's new girlfriend. Nowak's fate, as far as eternal notoriety goes, was sealed the second the word...

What drew cinematographer Polly Morgan to “Lucy in the Sky” was how Noah Hawley’s script so clearly illuminated the emotional breakdown of astronaut Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman) in a way that felt very insular: The visual cues were on the page — and conveyed an unusual approach to charting the character’s journey.
“When things fall apart in our lives, what we feel inside isn’t often illustrated visually,” says Morgan, who previously worked with Hawley on Seasons 2 and 3 of FX’s “Legion” and just wrapped production on “A Quiet Place 2.” For “Lucy in the Sky,” she says she brought a subtlety to the look “that could be really evocative to the viewer.”
In the film, Lucy finds that when she comes back to Earth after a stint in space, she can’t quite remain grounded. The film is loosely based on the story of astronaut Lisa Nowak, who...

It’s always a downer when talented artists pour everything they’ve got into a film that stubbornly refuses to come to life. That’s the case with Lucy in the Sky, an astronaut drama from a female perspective that argues space travel can seriously screw with your perceptions of life on earth. Take Lucy Cola, for example: She’s an astronaut with a Texas drawl and a can-do attitude that makes her a formidable competitor for the alpha males at Nasa. As played by an ardent, adventurous Natalie Portman,...

Emmy award winner Noah Hawley is, by his own admission, “fine with failure.” Best known to most audiences for his television hits “Fargo” and “Legion,” the author-turned-showrunner-and-filmmaker struck out plenty before finding his stride with his pair of FX television series. His latest jump, however, might prove to be another lesson in perseverance over success.
For his feature directorial debut, Hawley opted to make a film that is, in many ways, about failure itself. The reviews haven’t been kind.
Loosely based on the real-life story of disgraced former astronaut Lisa Nowak, who made headlines when she was arrested in 2007 for the attempted kidnapping of her ex-lover’s new girlfriend, “Lucy in the Sky” follows Natalie Portman as astronaut Lucy Cola, freshly returned from space and with a new (and often off-kilter) perspective on the world around her.

All About the Astronaut Love Triangle that Inspired Lucy in the Sky — and What Happened in Aftermath
It’s the criminal assault that launched a thousand punchlines — all of them built around an Earth-bound astronaut who was wearing a diaper.
In 2007 Lisa Nowak, a former mission specialist who’d once flown on a Nasa space shuttle, drove 14 hours and more than 900 miles from Houston to Orlando and attacked Colleen Shipman, her perceived rival for the affections of another astronaut, Bill Oefelein, in an airport parking lot. To avoid bathroom breaks on her hurried drive to meet Shipman’s arriving flight from Texas, Nowak told police she wore an adult diaper, a detail later disputed by her attorney.

After “Ad Astra” and now “Lucy in the Sky,” there should probably be some kind of psychological study done on astronauts who trek to outer space only to find they can no longer function among other human beings when they return to Earth.
While the former film strives to understand its protagonist, the latter, the latest from director Noah Hawley (creator of TV’s “Fargo” and “Legion”), portrays its lead character as an “erratic,” “spiraling” woman whose rapid descent into madness is somehow connected with her deep-rooted feminism. The results are, as you might expect, negative.
Astronaut Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman) has just returned home after a particularly remarkable trip to space where she, as she puts it, was even able to spot her own house. To the credit of cinematographer Polly Morgan (“The Intervention”) and sound mixer Jaya Jayaraja, outer space looks and sounds both spectacular and disturbingly serene...

Loosey Goosey: Hawley Gets Histrionic with Uneven Melodrama
At the end of Now, Voyager (1942) the chain-smoking Bette Davis delivers her iconic line to Paul Henreid, “Oh Jerry, don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.” Considered one of the most memorable and quotable lines of dialogue from Hollywood’s Golden Era, it caps Irving Rapper’s hefty melodrama with an immaculate moment which has allowed for the film’s enduring immortality despite the initial mixed critical reception it received upon release, dealing as it did with the troubled but hopeful spinster who finds happiness despite not having everything she wants. A similar legacy could be in order for Noah Hawley’s uneven narrative debut Lucy in the Sky which fashions a similarly complex and superficially charged veneer around Natalie Portman playing a composite of infamous astronaut Lisa Nowak, who in 2007 wore adult diapers as she embarked...

The most talked-about element of Noah Hawley’s astronaut drama “Lucy in the Sky” is the one thing that’s not in the movie. The film, which opens October 4 from Fox Searchlight, recreates the tawdry tabloid story of Lisa Nowak, the Nasa astronaut who, in 2007, drove from Houston to Orlando armed with latex gloves, a black wig, a Bb gun, pepper spray, and a grudge to chase down her ex-lover’s rebound at an airport. It was alleged that Nowak wore a Nasa-grade diaper on her journey, a claim that Nowak later denied.
There’s no diaper to be found in “Lucy in the Sky,” an ambitious but uneven nosedive into a woman’s shattering psyche, led by Natalie Portman in a mop-top and with shaky Southern drawl as Nowak stand-in Lucy Cola. Portman recently put the kibosh on “Lucy in the Sky” diapergate in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times,...

In 2007, astronaut and U.S. Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak was arrested in Florida. She was charged with attempting to kidnap an Air Force captain due to an apparent love triangle involving another astronaut. She became an instant media sensation due to these sordid details eclipsed the fact that just seven months earlier she flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery and operated robotic arms on the International Space Station. Apparently false claims of her wearing an astronaut garment designed for space travel in order to reach her destination without stopping for even a bathroom break led to her being dubbed “the diaper astronaut” on late night talk shows. It was the end of her career and a black mark on Nasa’s image.

Natalie Portman has a long history with space.
She’s been to a galaxy far, far away in “Star Wars,” traveled between worlds for “Thor,” and now she’s playing an astronaut in “Lucy in the Sky.” But first, she had to put on the spacesuit.
“It was really complicated. I was shocked at how many people it required,” she told Variety at the film’s premiere on Wednesday night at Fox Studios in Los Angeles. “The real ones weigh like 300 pounds — of course, not the movie one — but it was interesting to inform the physicality. They have to be quite strong because even though it’s weightless in space, the force pressing against you is so extreme. It was really wild and exciting and kind of like a childhood dream come true.”

When the name Lisa Nowak comes to mind, most think of the Nasa astronaut who famously drove across the country wearing adult diapers to kidnap her ex-lover's new girlfriend, later to be charged with attempted murder.
The diaper component of the story proved to be particularly buzzy and was expected to be a key storyline in Lucy in the Sky, the film loosely based on Nowak's life and post-space saga. However, after its Tiff premiere, audiences learned the diapers are not featured in the retelling at all, which has led to plenty of critical chatter online.

What is it about the awe-inspiring infinity of space that makes movie characters feel so sad? Seriously, there sure are a lot of films about moping-around-the-stars. Take for instance the space exploration drama “Ad Astra,” where Brad Pitt searches the solar system for his missing father while having an existential crisis. More like “Sad Astra.” Get it? “Sad” instead of “Ad”? You get it. Anyway, enjoy this breakdown of films that use the stars as a backdrop for stories about depression and grief.

I’m not going to mince words here: Lucy in the Sky is a terrible film. It’s a disaster, a fiasco, a complete tragedy. It’s the kind of film that will have people clamoring for the thesaurus because one word cannot summarize just how bad it is. This is the first film by Noah Hawley, the man responsible for the TV series Fargo and Legion, and his jump from TV to the big screen feels like he’s leaping into an industrial shredder. This film is so bad it made me wish director jail was a real place, where Hawley could be locked inside, and the key flown thousands of miles away so it could be cast into an ocean on the other side of the world. The fact that someone like Hawley has been able to attain this much power, money, and artistic freedom to make something...

Noah Hawley’s “Lucy in the Sky” is a wildly misbegotten mess, a goulash of incongruent tones and unclear motives—which is a shame, as it features several noteworthy performances, and full sequences that could have worked, in a film that knew what the hell to do with them. It’s loosely inspired by the story of Lisa Nowak, the former Nasa astronaut who made headlines for her participation in a bizarre 2007 love triangle and kidnapping plot, and perhaps an affecting film could’ve been made from that story; we’ll never know.

The term “space case” may as well have been invented for Lucy Cola, a fictional astronaut loosely inspired by Lisa Nowak, who famously (if not entirely factually) donned adult diapers and powered her way cross-country to confront a romantic rival at the Orlando airport, where she was arrested for what amounted to attempted kidnapping and battery. When the story broke — this was a dozen years back, in 2007 — news outlets and tabloids alike treated it as a kind of pathetic “Fatal Attraction” scenario, in which a jealous Nasa engineer couldn’t handle being dumped by one of her colleagues and went berserk.
Now, Natalie Portman offers an alternate interpretation. In its oddly understanding and stylistically ambitious way, “Lucy in the Sky” suggests that maybe outer space was to blame for Nowak’s actions. You see, as an astronaut, Nowak belonged to a very small club of super-achievers who have actually touched the heavens,...

There aren’t a lot of things Hollywood loves more in a film than the retelling of true-to-life events or the on-screen portrayal of the real life of a complicated or inspiring person. And the excitement of that film spurred the new film’s A-list cast, including Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader as grown-up members of The Losers Club. Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for Natalie Portman’s upcoming astronaut drama Lucy in the Sky. The film was written and directed by Noah Hawley (Legion and Fargo), and Portman plays a successful female astronaut named Lucy Cola who, "after coming back home from a mission in space, starts to unravel when confronted by her seemingly perfect American dream life."
The story will explore the theory that astronauts lose touch with reality after prolonged periods in space, and as you’ll see, Lucy’s life start to unravel out of control as she starts up an affair with a fellow astronaut (Jon Hamm). Dan Stevens plays Lucy’s husband in the film.

Did you know that Brad Pitt has another Oscar-y movie — besides “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” — that is landing this year on Sept. 20? Well, now you do thanks to this exclusive IMAX trailer for “Ad Astra,” directed by James Gray (“The Lost City of Z”). The actor, who has been lingering on the Academy Award overdue list to be recognized for his thesping abilities for far too long, might have a shot with his lead role as astronaut Roy McBride, who is blasted into space to find his missing father (Tommy Lee Jones), a renegade scientist whose experiments could harm the solar system.
The epic space odyssey, which will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this month, also stars Liv Tyler as Pitt’s wife as well as Donald Sutherland, Ruth Negga and Jamie Kennedy. When Gray first announced his plans to do the film — whose...

Back in March, we reported the trailer and description for the film Lucy In The Sky, previously named Pale Blue Dot, about a female astronaut named Lucy, who, "after coming back home from a mission in space, starts to unravel when confronted by her seemingly perfect American dream life." We finally have a release date for the drama, of October 4th. The film marks director Noah Hawley’s feature debut, and stars Natalie Portman in the key role.
Lucy returns to her life on earth and her husband, played by Dan Stevens. Lucy’s life begins to unravel when, after having an affair with fellow astronaut, played by Jon Hamm, he begins another affair with a new trainee, and her life doesn’t feel the same as it used to. The film is loosely based on the astronaut Lisa Nowak's alleged criminal activities involving her romance with astronaut William Oefelein.

Fox Searchlight has set October 4 for the limited release of Noah Hawley’s Lucy in the Sky, which stars Natalie Portman as an astronaut who returns from space.
With Lucy‘s new date, Disney officially is still keeping the wide release for Fox’s Joe Wright-directed Amy Adams feature The Woman in the Window on the same date. That pic is going back for reshoots, with the studio to assess whether it gets moved or not.
In Lucy in the Sky, Portman’s astronaut returns to Earth to learn that her boyfriend (Jon Hamm) is having an affair with an astronaut trainee. She bottoms out and desperately tries to correct all that is wrong. Also starring are Dan Stevens, Ellen Burstyn and Zazie Beetz. No word yet if Lucy will hit Telluride or Tiff.
Hawley, Brian C. Brown and Elliott Diguiseppi wrote the script, which is inspired by real-life Nasa Captain Lisa Nowak.

At surface level, Lisa Nowak had it all - a wholesome family life and a bustling career as a Nasa astronaut. But just over a decade ago, her life turned a complete 180 degrees. Dressing up in a wig and wearing an adult diaper, she drove over 900 miles to confront the woman whom her ex-lover was seeing, a move that led to her dismissal from Nasa shortly after her successful space mission. Natalie Portman, with cropped hair and a Southern twang, brings a loose adaptation of Nowak's scandal to the big screen this year alongside Jon Hamm in Lucy in the Sky. Suffice to say, the movie doesn't need all that much embellishment, as the real-life debacle that unfolded was truly out of this world.
Nowak's Career
Nowak flourished in a highly accomplished career. In 1987, she became a Naval Flight Officer in Nas Pensacola, Fl, later entering the Nasa Astronaut Corps at the Johnson Space Center.

Not long after completing a successful space mission, Lisa Nowak became known as the diaper-wearing astronaut seeking revenge in a scandalous love triangle in 2007. Over a decade later, Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm will bring a loose adaptation of her real-life story onto the big screen in the upcoming movie Lucy in the Sky. You might be wondering where's the fallen astronaut is today. What happened to her victim and her former lover? Here's everything that anyone following her case should know.
For two years, Nowak, a married mother of three children and a successful astronaut, had an affair with Bill Oefelein, a fellow Nasa employee. Oefelein began seeing Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman, eventually breaking things off with Nowak. Driving 900 miles from Houston to Orlando in an adult diaper, Nowak, whose car was filled with weapons and other incriminating materials, confronted Shipman at the Orlando International Airport. She doused Shipman with pepper spray,...

Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer for Lucy in the Sky, starring Natalie Portman as astronaut Lucy Cola. In the film, Portman plays an astronaut who returns to Earth after a transcendent experience during a recent mission and begins to lose touch with reality in a world that now seems far too small to contain her after suffering a breakdown of sorts.
The film is directed by Noah Hawley (the creator of “Fargo” and “Legion”) in his feature debut. The film, loosely based on astronaut Lisa Nowak’s alleged romance with fellow astronaut William Oefelein, is written by Brian C Brown, Elliott Diguiseppi, and Noah Hawley. Starring alongside Portman are Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, Zazie Beetz, Pearl Amanda Dickson, and Ellen Burstyn.

No one plays unhinged quite like Natalie Portman, and she’s got another doozy on tap, judging by the first trailer for “Lucy in the Sky” (watch above).
The Oscar winner plays Lucy Cola, an astronaut who loses grip with reality upon her return to Earth and soon starts an affair with another astronaut, Mark (Jon Hamm). “I go up there and see the whole universe and everything here looks so small,” Lucy says in the clip over a shot of her and Mark bowling with a ball painted like Earth. Subtle, guys.
Portman adopts a Southern accent and dons a short wig that looks like the follicular love child of her ‘do in “The Professional” (1994) and Claire Foy‘s bob in “First Man.” As Lucy further unravels, the teaser ends with Lucy running from police and a shot of her in a room (therapy session?) in which she tells...

The first trailer has been released for Natalie Portman’s upcoming astronaut sci-fi drama called Lucy in the Sky. The film was previously titled Pale Blue Dot, and it comes from Legion and Fargo writer Noah Hawley. This is marks his feature film directorial debut.
The story will explore the theory that astronauts lose touch with reality after prolonged periods in space. Portman plays a successful female astronaut named Lucy Cola who, "after coming back home from a mission in space, starts to unravel when confronted by her seemingly perfect American dream life."
She ends up having an affair with a fellow astronaut (Jon Hamm), which as you might imagine starts spiraling out of control when he begins sleeping with an astronaut trainee. Dan Stevens stars as Lucy’s husband in the film. The movie is actually loosely based on astronaut Lisa Nowak's alleged criminal activities involving her romance with astronaut William Oefelein.

Today the first teaser trailer was released for Noah Hawley's feature film directorial debut Lucy in the Sky. Come inside to hear more about it!
Originally titled Pale Blue Dot, Lucy in the Sky stars Natalie Portman as Lucy Cola, an astronaut who begins to lose her grip on reality after going to space. The trailer begins like a typical space story, but it quickly sidesteps into the surreal in a series of stunning images.
If the trailer is anything to go by, Natalie Portman is going to knock this film out of the park. The actress has been on a roll with science-fiction films as of late (having appeared in Annihilation last year) so it will be exciting to see what she brings to the story. Portman is joined by Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens, and Ellen Burstyn. The film's story is very loosely based on the...

Natalie Portman has nailed the art of unraveling in films such as “Vox Lux” and “Black Swan,” the latter of which won her the Oscar for Best Actress, and she’s back at it again with her latest release, “Lucy in the Sky.” Formerly titled “Pale Blue Dot,” the movie marks the directorial debut of television favorite Noah Hawley, who serves as showrunner on FX’s “Legion” and “Fargo.”
Loosely based on a true story, “Lucy in the Sky” stars Portman as an astronaut who returns home from a long mission and finds herself losing her connection to her family. When her boyfriend begins having an affair with an astronaut trainee, Portman’s character bottoms out and takes drastic measures to right the wrong. Joining Portman in the cast are Jon Hamm, Hawley’s “Legion” actor Dan Stevens, Ellen Burstyn, and “Atlanta” favorite Zazie Beetz.

Natalie Portman plays an astronaut who struggles to readjust to life on Earth after her encounter with the vastness of space in the new trailer for Lucy In the Sky. The film is loosely based on the 2007 tabloid saga of Lisa Nowak, who famously drove from Houston to Orlando, wearing an adult diaper, to kidnap her ex-boyfriend’s new lover.
The new trailer boasts an eerie sci-fi edge as it jumps between sequences of Lucy and her crew floating through outer space and, later, Lucy sitting down to say grace before a family meal.

"You got to see the vast celestial everything, and it blew your mind." Fox Searchlight has finally unveiled the first trailer for Lucy in the Sky, the feature directorial debut of TV filmmaker Noah Hawley (creator of "Fargo" and "Legion"). Formerly titled Pale Blue Dot before Lucy in the Sky (sans diamonds), this film is loosely based on astronaut Lisa Nowak's alleged criminal activities involving her romance with astronaut William Oefelein. In 2007, after completing her mission in space, she drove from Houston to Orlando and confronted another woman. Natalie Portman plays a fictionalized version of her named Lucy Cola, who has a breakdown and starts to lose her grip on reality after returning. The cast also includes Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens, Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro, Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo, and Joe Williamson. We've all been waiting to get a glimpse at this and, as expected, it looks damn good.

Yes, it’s way too early to do this. Blame my editorial overlords. But, believe it or not, awards planning for Oscars 2020 has already begun. The first salvo was Sundance, which yielded slim Oscar pickings, mostly on the documentary side. The first week of April, studio presentations at CinemaCon will throw out some tentative Oscar bait. May brings Cannes, which is unlikely to show Netflix’s best stuff in Competition due to French theaters’ archaic three-year exclusive theatrical window.
Depending on what new Oscar rules emerge in April, Amazon and Netflix are in the Oscar hunt. On the acting side, Meryl Streep is back, along with Timothée Chalamet, Antonio Banderas, and Adam Driver, in multiple movies.
Here’s a list of 17 potential 2020 awards auteurs, in alphabetical order.

Filming is currently underway on Noah Hawley’s feature film directorial debut “Pale Blue Dot,” but distributor Fox Searchlight isn’t waiting any longer to debut the first look at Natalie Portman in the lead role. The “Black Swan” Oscar winner stars in the true story drama as Nasa Captain Lisa Nowak, who made headlines in 2007 for driving 900 miles from Houston to Orlando with a knife and a Bb gun in order to confront her former lover, fellow astronaut Bill Oefelein, and his new girlfriend.
The film is notable for being Hawley’s first foray into directing movies. Hawley is best known as the creator of FX’s acclaimed dramas “Fargo” and “Legion,” and he’s directed multiple episodes on each show. Joining Portman in the cast are Jon Hamm, Hawley’s “Legion” actor Dan Stevens, Ellen Burstyn, and “Atlanta” and “Deadpool 2” favorite Zazie Beetz.

Dan Stevens will play Natalie Portman’s on-screen spouse in Fox Searchlight’s astronaut drama “Pale Blue Dot.”
Portman will portray a married astronaut who returns to Earth after a mission and begins an affair with a fellow astronaut, played by Jon Hamm. The film explores the theory that astronauts who spend long periods of time in space lose their sense of reality when they come back home.
Zazie Beetz is set to portray an astronaut trainee who also becomes involved with Hamm’s character.
The film reteams Stevens with his “Legion” creator Noah Hawley, who’s directing from a script by Brian C. Brown and Elliott Diguiseppi. Reese Witherspoon, who was initially attached to star, will produce with Bruna Papandrea.
