[This story contains spoilers for Civil War.]
“The footage you’re about to see may be disturbing.” That content warning, broadcast on the news too often in modern history, was stuck on a loop in the back of my mind as I watched Alex Garland’s latest film, Civil War.
As I sat through the credits, I considered what that warning actually suggests. Yes, it’s a useful way to prepare the viewer for what they’re about to see, but it’s also an invitation to look away, to ignore, to pretend that what happened didn’t happen that way. It’s permission to avoid truth and discomfort.
So, it comes as no surprise then that Civil War should draw controversy, as it washes us, and its central characters, in discomfort with no warning, no invitation to look away, and with no tribe to cling to and tell us what’s right and what’s wrong.

Big changes are coming to Bluesky. The alternative to Twitter/X is moving beyond its custom recommendation algorithms by rolling out a default Discover feed that resembles TikTok’s For You Page.
Bluesky, which is backed by Jack Dorsey and other longtime Twitter execs, aims to provide a more customized experience than X. The app’s bread-and-butter is its decentralized structure, which allows users to build and share their own themed feeds. The new Discover page, which replaces a preexisting product named What’s Hot, pulls each user’s feeds together on a central hub. As a blog post from Bluesky explains, Discover is a mix of trending posts, updates from your follows, and content that exists “near your social graph.”
In an era when some social networks are sparring with users over frustrating algorithmic adjustments, Bluesky is committing to its core theme of user choice. “If you don’t like our new Discover feed,...

Taylor Swift may have tucked a 30 Rock reference into “Anti-Hero”, the first single off her new album Midnights.
The records was released on Friday (21 October) at 12am exactly, which means Swift’s fans – known as Swifties – have already had hours to listen and dissect the tracks.
One lyric in particular, however, has created more consternation than others. On “Anti-Hero”, Swift sings: “Sometimes, I feel like everybody is a sexy baby / And I’m a monster on the hill.”
Some fans have suggested that the phrase “sexy baby” is ripped from a season five episode of 30 Rock, in which Tina Fey’s character – Liz Lemon – lectures an over-sexualised employee.
The adult employee in question, Abby, wears her hair in childlike pigtails and speaks in a soft baby voice.
She also objects to Liz’s interference, stating: “The whole sexy baby thing isn’t an act. I am a very sexy baby.
