“American Idol” marked its 20th birthday on Monday night with “The Great Idol Reunion,” a one-hour special featuring past “Idol” contestants and judges and celebrating the show’s history, both during its years on Fox and its current home on ABC.
“Tonight we are opening the Idol yearbook,” said host Ryan Seacrest as he revealed the “Idol” VIP area, which included such familiar faces as Tamyra Gray, Pia Toscano, Anthony Federov, Brooke White, Justin Guarini, William Hung, and Seacrest’s unforgettable frosted hair.
Wasting no time getting to Hung, whose name is “synonymous with ‘American Idol,'” noted Seacrest, he returned to the stage to reprise his epic Ricky Martin performance of “She Bangs” as former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson felt right at home alongside the current panel of Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
In classic Abdul form, she kicked into Paula-speak, which fans surely fondly remember.

Get ready to party with a Hardy once more. “American Idol” is finally celebrating its countrified Season 17 champ Laine Hardy after mostly making the reigning winner somewhat of an afterthought Instead, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan regularly invoked the name of last year’s runner-up, singer-songwriter Alejandro Aranda, who was invited to meet the Season 18 hopefuls and provide them with tips during the early rounds.
Here’s hoping they treat 19-year-old bayou boy Laine with more courtesy on Disney Night than when Season 16 winner Maddie Poppe joined her runner-up beau Caleb Lee Hutchinson for a brief duet of “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin.” As she shared in a post-show tweet to her fans, Maddie was expecting to promote her upcoming album, “Whirlwind,” on air after they finished the song. Instead, the show cut to a commercial.

ABC has announced the altered schedule for the current 2020 season of “American Idol,” in response to the deadly coronavirus pandemic that’s crippling the entertainment industry. The Hawaii-set “final showcase” episodes will now air Sunday, March 29 and Sunday, April 5 — that’s right, no more Monday episodes from here on out. The following two Sundays (April 12 and April 19) will feature brand new “American Idol: This is Me” episodes which delve deeper into the lives of the Top 20 finalists, with unseen footage and performance highlights.
Regarding the all-important “American Idol” live shows for Season 18, ABC is still “monitoring the situation and exploring multiple options within statewide guidelines.” As soon as a production plan is in place the network will share the details. Obviously the safety and health of the contestants, judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest are of utmost importance in these trying times.

America voted on ABC’s updated version of “American Idol,” and chose Season 16’s Maddie Poppe and Season 17’s Laine Hardy fairly and squarely. But the show was definitely stingy promoting ukulele-strumming indie popster Maddie when she and her runner-up beau Caleb Lee Hutchinson, briefly sang a duet of “Part of Your World” from “Aladdin” on Disney night. She was supposed to give an on-air plug for her upcoming album “Whirlwind,” but the show quickly cut to a commercial instead.
Now, the premiere episode of Season 18 last Sunday started with a voiceover recap by host Ryan Seacrest reminding viewers about what went down last season when country singer Laine Hardy — who was previously eliminated from the show — staged an amazing comeback and won it all. As Ryan said, “The bayou boy became the latest of ‘Idol’s’ rich legacy of stars with a career that has taken off.”

Through the years since it began in 2002, “American Idol” has supported their winners and even runners-up. Just this week, Gabby Barrett, who was the second runner-up on Season 16, performed her new country single, “I Hope,” about a cheating boyfriend. Meanwhile, Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert — who acted as a coach on Queen week since he is the band’s current frontman — will perform on the May 19 finale.
Last year’s winner, Maddie Poppe, showed up with her beau, Season 16 runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson, during a Disney-themed week on April 21. They did a brief duet of “A Whole New World” from the animated musical “Aladdin,” which has been redone in live-action form starring Will Smith as the genie and opens May 24. However, there was no promotion of her upcoming album, “Whirlwind,” released on the Disney-owned label Hollywood Records, which will land on May 17.

The season finale of “American Idol,” scheduled for May 19 on ABC, is fast approaching, which means another star-studded performance show to usher in a new winner. Among those already announced to appear is “Idol” season 8 runner-up and Queen frontman Adam Lambert.
For much of its 17-year life as a television phenomenon, “Idol” made efforts to support its previous winner, be it David Cook (season 7) or Fantasia (season 3) with much coveted airtime. So why has the show seemingly broken from tradition this year in practically ignoring its previous victor, Maddie Poppe? “Idol” viewers are wondering and openly questioning on social media.
Although Poppe and her boyfriend, fellow season 16 finalist and runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson, did appear on a Disney-themed episode on April 21 to perform an abbreviated duet of Aladdin’s “A Whole New World,” there was no mention of her forthcoming Hollywood Records debut, “Whirlwind,” due on May 17 (the label...

Hey, American Idol fans. Tonight is bad news for any of you who were fans of Uche and Dimitrius Graham because they unfortunately weren't good enough to make the cut tonight. Tonight's Live show was the very first show to actually go live from the west coast to the east coast. The viewing audience watched and voted simultaneously. Then when the show was all said and done, the votes were tallied up and the results were revealed. The top 10 contestants had to all sing classic Disney songs. Bless their hearts. The three judges: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were on hand. The contestants were mentored by funny actress Rebel Wilson. The judge's "save" was back in play. So, they had the option to save any of the contestants that needed it. To get the night started, Uche hopped on stage to sing the song titled, "Eye to Eye" from a Goofy Disney movie.

“The clear front-runner this season is Alejandro Aranda,” says Gold Derby contributor Denton Davidson, who joins senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Susan Wloszczyna to discuss the recently revealed Top 14 on Season 17 of “American Idol.” “He’s been the most buzzed about online and his performances are just on a totally different level than anyone else at this point,” Davidson continues. Some aspiring musical heavyweights decide to slim down before trying out for “American Idol.” Season 16 runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson started dieting before the audition rounds and managed to shed 85 pounds by the time of the finale. Meanwhile, current top-20 hopeful Ryan Hammond dropped 170 pounds last year after undergoing weight loss surgery.
But at least two male winners, Season 13’s burly rocker Caleb Johnson and Season 2’s soulful “Velvet Teddy Bear” Ruben Studdard, who was granted his nickname by guest judge Gladys Knight, didn’t have any problem fitting into their role as the next American Idol.
This year, there are two big guys in the running who are graced with wonderfully unique and mature voices that set them apart from the pack. I don’t know much about country star Josh Turner. But I do know Scotty McCreery, who turned Turner’s “Your Man” into his reality-competition signature tune. When I hear, “Baby, lock the doors and turn the lights down low, put some music on that’s soft and slow,” I think of Scotty’s surprisingly deep and velvety vocals. The Season 10 winner performed that song for his audition and also during Hollywood week.
When Scotty had his hometown visit to Garner, North Carolina and performed before a sizable audience at the local fairgrounds, his idol Turner showed up as he was singing “Your Man” and the crowd went crazy. Then a high-schooler, Scotty declared that “it might just be the best day of my life.”
But now that “American Idol” is on ABC instead of Fox, it seems like any old auditioner can be the one commanding that those doors get locked.

“American Idol” is back in the Emmy race after Season 16 premiered on ABC in 2018 following a two-year hiatus. Prior to that, the series spent 15 seasons at Fox where it racked up an astounding 67 Emmy nominations and eight wins. Nine of those noms were for Best Reality-Competition Program where it was defeated every time. Will the ABC reboot of this iconic reality TV series receive the same love from Emmy voters this time around? Below are four reasons why “American Idol” will have a strong resurgence at the Emmys.

We all know Maddie Poppe can sing and play guitar — she is ABC’s first-ever American Idol winner, after all — but did you know she also boasts a secret third talent?
“I think I’m pretty decent at fooling people to make them think I’m not nervous,” Poppe told TVLine and other reporters on Wednesday. “That’s just the way I deal with my nerves. I try to act relaxed.”
And that nerve-suppressing ability came in handy quite a few times during Monday’s Idol finale, beginning with her duet of “Rainbow Connection” with none other than Kermit the Frog.

For the third-place finalist in American Idol‘s inaugural season on ABC, one word prevails when describing the experience: “bittersweet.”
That applies, first and foremost, to Monday’s two-hour finale, which found Gabby Barrett rushing off stage a full 45 minutes before we saw Maddie Poppe crowned the winner.
“When they said Caleb’s name first, and it was down to me and Maddie, something in my gut told me Maddie was getting through and I wasn’t,” Barrett told TVLine and other media outlets on Tuesday. “I don’t know if the Lord was telling me, or what, but I was Ok with it.

We laughed. We cried. We laughed some more. Thanks, Katy Perry!
The “American Idol” finale may have been a little lackluster in terms of star power, but the judge in the middle seat — when she could endure sitting in it for more than a minute — more than made up for it. Whether it was begging Bachelorette contender Becca Kufrin for her hand — and a chance to compete on the ABC show — or spinning herself silly after the revelation that Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe are now a couple, or mock fawning over hottie Trevor Holmes, who showed up again in a cute video sendup of Richle’s “Hello” with Ada Vox and Noah Davis, between Perry’s snappy retorts, her physical comedy or her pop culture know-how, there was not a dull moment.

Just minutes before Maddie Poppe won “American Idol” on Monday May 21, she gave an encore performance of her audition song, “Rainbow Connection.” When she first sang this melody from “The Muppet Movie” penned by Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher, she did it alone in front of judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
For this reprise, she was joined on stage by Kermit the Frog, who crooned the tune in the 1979 film. Back then, it contended for Best Original Song at the Oscars but lost to “It Goes Like It Goes” from “Norma Rae.”

Maddie Poppe defied the odds and won season 16 of “American Idol” on Monday over frontrunner Gabby Barrett and Caleb Lee Hutchinson. As part of her prize, Poppe gets bragging rights to having the official winner’s single: “Going Going Gone.” The show released that track last Friday, as well as those by Barrett (“Rivers Deep”) and Hutchinson (“”Johnny Cash Heart”). Watch Poppe perform this new song just moments after Ryan Seacrest revealed that she had won on May 21 and then give it a grade in the poll below.
The tune was written by a trio of talented songsmiths: Mitch Allan, Lindy Robbins and Julia Michaels. Poppe introduced it on Sunday’s final and earned praise from the three judges. Her biggest champion, Katy Perry, said: “I think that song is one of the better songs of the three that guys you all have. I think you’re a real star.

After weeks and weeks of auditions, live performances, and Katy Perry wardrobe malfunctions, the first winner of the American Idol reboot has been announced. So, who won the reality singing competition in 2018? It was none other than Maddie Poppe! Ryan Seacrest crowned Maddie as judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry — and her boyfriend Caleb Lee Hutchinson, who came in second — cheered on. Gabby Barrett came in third in an incredibly close vote. In a twist of fate, Maddie auditioned for The Voice back in 2015, but none of the judges turned their chairs for her during the blind audition. "I was a terrible singer at that song — it was not good," Maddie told local newspaper The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier at the time. "I’m not making excuses, I just wasn’t ready. I’ve changed so much in three years that I’m glad it didn’t work out (on The Voice)." Wig!
