Amazon is removing A League of Their Own from its scripted lineup.
The retail giant and streamer has reversed course and canceled the queer-themed reboot of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film after previously renewing the series for a four-episode second and final season. Sources say Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, plans to shop League with the hopes that the series can find a new home for season two. Scripts for all four episodes of what was planned to be the conclusion of the series were completed before the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2.
The decision to cancel the series from co-creators/showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson (who also starred) comes as Hollywood’s first dual strikes since the 1960s has brought production to a standstill. Graham and Jacobson fought to get the series a second season as Amazon and producers Sony Pictures Television negotiated to...

‘A League Of Their Own’ Canceled: Prime Video Not Proceeding With Second & Final Season Amid Strikes
Exclusive: Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned.
It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed.
As Deadline reported earlier today, both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.
In a story earlier this week, Deadline reported that there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day, with freshman series going into Season 2 the most vulnerable. There was a similar string of unrenewals during the pandemic.

When I was a kid, I had the feeling I was undercover as a boy. I was on a little league baseball team called the Chesapeake Bagel Bakery Bagels, which means I was a Bagel, though I never felt like I deserved the name. I was certain that the other boys on the team were going to look at me and see that I was somehow different, that I was attracted to them and wanted to tear their circular-bread-emblazoned uniforms off, that I was a Danish in a Bagel uniform. I was terrible at being in the closet. When we played Truth or Dare, I would dare my friends to kiss me, and then intentionally laugh loudly to emphasize how hilarious and not at all sexy I found that idea.

As has been rumored, there will be no second full season for “A League of Their Own,” the Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham-created series based on the 1992 Penny Marshall comedy, as per The Hollywood Reporter. After a good deal of negotiation between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon, however, fans will get some “extra innings”—a four-episode wrap-up.
The show is set in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was created in the thick of World War II. The series has recruited 95-year-old Maybelle Blair as a consultant, and she has been active in promoting the project.
The series stars Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field, and Kate Berlant and is pointedly more focused on issues like racism and homophobia than the wacky Tom Hanks-led picture from the 1990s. As such, it has gained a strong and sincere following, many of whom have taken to social media...

Amazon has officially renewed “A League of Their Own” for Season 2, which will also be the show’s last. The first season consisted of eight episodes, while the second season will consist of just four.
“Making this show and seeing the impact it has had in the world has been an incredible joy,” said series creators Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson. “While obviously we were hoping for eleven seasons, we’re grateful to be able to continue to tell the story of these characters and this world.”
The announcement comes about a month after it was initially reported that “A League of Their Own” would be coming to an end with an abbreviated second season.

Prime Video has ordered the second installment of “A League of Their Own,” which will be a four-episode limited series, as previously leaked much to fans’ disappointment.
The television version of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film looks deeper into race, sexuality and other identity aspects of the players who participated in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was formed when the men had to go fight in World War II.
“We’re deeply proud of the work that Abbi [Jacobson], Will [Graham], the cast, and crew have done reimagining ‘A League of Their Own’ which has produced an incredibly loyal fan base as well as achieved numerous, well-deserved recognitions and accolades,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon and MGM Studios. “After hearing what Abbi, Will, and the writing team have planned for the new story within this wonderful series, we are excited for our fans to see what comes next.

It’s official: Amazon’s A League of Their Own reimagining is ending with an abbreviated run.
As The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported March 14, the beloved women in baseball series will conclude with a four-episode run that Amazon is billing as a limited series. The news, which sparked online outrage and prompted a fan campaign for #MoreThanFour, was formally announced Wednesday in a press release from Amazon that followed months of negotiations with Sony Pictures Television and after the cast and creatives had to ink new deals for the abbreviated run.

Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham’s “A League of Their Own” series on Amazon’s Prime Video will return for a shortened final season of four episodes, according to multiple reports.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon made the decision after months of negotiations that included a reduction of the show’s licensing fee by Sony, who owns the rights to the movie. The streaming arm of the retail and tech company sought to lower the budget and production costs for a second season. Even a movie was considered for the show’s conclusion, according to THR sources.
Co-creator of the show Will Graham tweeted in response to the reports, adding onto a thread he began earlier Tuesday morning.

Amazon’s queer take on Penny Marshall’s beloved A League of Their Own will get one last at-bat.
The retail giant/streamer, following months of negotiations, has handed out a second and final season renewal for the series from showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson. The Sony Pictures Television-produced show will conclude with a four-episode final season. The news follows months of renegotiations with Sony to lower the show’s licensing fee, and the cast had to sign new deals, given the order is for half the episodes that were featured in season one, sources say.
Reps for Amazon and Sony declined to comment as deals have not yet been completed for what sources say will be billed as a “limited series.”

In Amazon’s A League of Their Own TV show, the experiences of women in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League are just half of the story.
A scene in Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the same name inspires the other half of the series, which debuted Aug. 12 on Prime Video. In the sequence, Rockford Peaches catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) fields a painfully fast throw from an unnamed Black woman (DeLisa Chinn-Tyler), who comes down from the stands to return a foul ball. It’s one of the movie’s most memorable moments because of what it alludes to beyond its brief screen time: the history of Black women in baseball.
Given the chance to expand the story Marshall told, which itself was based on director Mary Wilson and producers Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele’s 1987 documentary about the Aagpbl, co-creators Abbi Jacobson...

Molly Ephraim rounds the bases in Prime Video’s small screen adaptation of “A League of Their Own” as both an important outfielder as well as a crucial comedic actress on the team of women who find themselves bonded by their first season in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball Team on the Rockford Peaches.
“When I auditioned, I think the breakdown said like, ‘the spunkiest person you’ll ever meet,’ and there was an audition scene with her just hysterically laughing,” Ephraim said in an interview with TheWrap. “I was like, ‘I can do that. That’s in my wheelhouse.’ A loud, insane laugh.”
Ephraim plays Maybelle Fox, a spunky blonde single woman who often pumps the team up with her energy and sass.

Note: The following contains spoilers for “A League of Their Own.”
Honoring Penny Marshall’s 1992 film, Prime Video’s new “A League of Their Own” series replicates the movie’s dual narrative in a new way. Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson) and Max Chapman (Chanté Adams) do not share the bond of sisterhood like the original film’s Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty), but their love of baseball brings them together in the show and allows them to connect over their shared queer identities.
Carson Shaw haphazardly catches her train to tryouts, leaving behind her household and in some ways, her marriage to Charlie Shaw (Patrick J. Adams), though he has not yet returned from war. On this new adventure, she discovers not only a fierce love for her baseball team and the drive to win, but also women who like other women.

Those of us who grew up loving baseball — going to games with Dad, learning to keep score, listening to the hometown broadcasts on the local Am radio stations — know these things to be true: Hot dogs, especially with mustard, taste better at the ballpark. The universal designated hitter is a ridiculous idea. And 1992’s “A League of Their Own” is unquestionably one of the best baseball movies of all time. Even if you’ve never seen it, you know its most famous line, delivered by Tom Hanks as washed-up former pro ballplayer who thinks he’s now slumming it by managing a team of girls in short skirts: “There’s no crying in baseball!”

Not everything is going just peachy when it comes to the Rockford Peaches.
Based on the true story and inspired by Penny Marshall’s hit 1992 film of the same name, Amazon Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own” captures the all-women baseball league during WWII. “Broad City” showrunner Abbi Jacobson co-created, stars, and executive produces the eight-episode series, which premieres on the streamer on August 12. “Mozart in the Jungle” helmer Will Graham co-created the show.
Centered on the real-life all-female traveling baseball league formed in 1943, “A League of Their Own” introduces entirely new characters separate from the film. Jacobson stars as Carson, a catcher who joins a team during WWII and seems to spark a romance with slugger Greta (D’Arcy Carden). Chanté Adams (“A Journal for Jordan”) co-leads as baseball phenom Max, a composite character representing real-life Negro League players Mamie Johnson, Connie Morgan, and Toni Stone. There may be no crying in baseball, but there were tears all throughout the world premiere of Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own.”
Co-created and executive-produced by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle”), “A League of Their Own” debuted at Tribeca 2022 on June 13. The TV reimagining of Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 film of the same name was a “labor of love that has taken most of our adult lives,” Jacobson joked while introducing the pilot episode, which premieres on Prime Video August 12.
“We had a chance to talk to Penny before she passed away,” Graham explained. “She told us these stories changed her life and it will for you too. As much as we love the movie, it’s really the stories underneath it, including the ones of queer women, of women of color, those ones that didn’t make it into the 1992 film.
